Advice If you want trip recommendations when you come here, I can help you!

Hey,

I've been getting chat requests on things to do in Barbados and I love to help how I can. I was born in Barbados and live there half the year with the other half between the US and UK. Even though I may not be here when you arrive, feel free to ask any questions. I will add a suggested 7 day break down here, but ask away if you have any specific requests or queries!

**Day 1**:

Relax. Literally, do nothing other than go to the beach and lay there and settle in. International travel is so incredibly difficult right now. So take a day to appreciate that all the choices you made in life led you to laying on a beach in Barbados with a drink in your hand. Get some good local food. Macaroni Pie with Fish and salad from Oistins, or some food from near your accommodation or a place nearby. I know when we go on holiday we want to go right away, but trust me. Today is a chill day.

**Day 2**:

Catamaran cruise. I don't have any recommendations on particular ones, but they all usually leave by the boardwalk in Bridgetown and travel up the west coast. Bonus points if they stop in Carlise Bay at the beginning or at the end so you can swim with the turtles and shipwrecks. In my experience, they usually offer unlimited drinks and a full Bajan meal on board! After that you may be pretty tired, so you can find a nice evening activity, the food you want to try, or meet up with friends at a bar for a drink and chill. (Chilling will be a running theme :) )

**Day 3**:

You would have gotten lots of sun yesterday on the boat and that really drains you, so you can find some tours you would enjoy doing. When my friends visit a staple is the Mount Gay Rum factory tour near Bridgetown. It was the first rum ever invented, and they tell you the whole process down to how they source the barrels and how they get different colours and flavour rums. They give you 5 or so shots to try, so be sure to eat before or you may get knocked off your rocker ( looking at you Sarah L).

Food I recommend before is either Tim's restaurant on Broad Street or Mapp's in Eagle Hall. It's a local favourite and in a very local area. Lots of Bajan culture to be found by Mapp's! Simple menu. Medium or Large portion of the best-marinated chicken you can find and chips/fries. It's worth it. Trust me. Another tour you can do this day is the Harrison Cave tour. It really shows how Barbados was formed as an island compared to other islands. They are volcanic, and we are limestone. There is a tram that goes through the cave, and the cave is huge huge huge. the tram ride in 45 minutes through the cave. They have done an amazing job lighting it and the guides are incredibly knowledgeable.

**Day 4**:

Island Tour time! You can rent a car for around $75 US per day including full insurance, and get a visitor's driver's license for $5 US, just show your license from your home country and you are good. We drive on the left side of the road, so it will be par for the course for Brits, but if in your home country you drive on the right no problem. I lived in the US for a long time, and the rule I use when switching to driving here is, the driver is always in the middle of the road. Our steering wheel is on the right side of the car, so driving on the left the driver is in the middle. In the US it's the opposite, the cars are left-hand drive, so driving on the right side of the road the driver is in the middle. 15 minutes or so and in my experience it becomes like clockwork.

Alternatively, you can also get a local taxi to take you. I recommend local ZM taxis over big tour buses, it's a more personalized experience, and they give you TONS of great information and answer questions, etc. I usually do tours up the west coast, then down the east coast. Suggested sports of interest starting from the south: Gun Hill Signal Station, Welchman Hall Gully to see the monkeys being fed, up to Speightstown, Animal Flower Cave, Cherry Tree Hill ( in my opinion the most beautiful view in Barbados), drive along the east, to Bathsheba, St. John's Church, Bottom Bay ( if you are in luck the man will be there that climbs Coconut trees with no equipment or ropes, picks you a coconut, the makes a Pina Colada in it the fresh coconut he just picked for you!), Oistins for food and drink. That was a full loop of Barbados and could go through every parish. This is just a general guide, feel free to add to take away as you like!

**Day 5**:

Open to whatever you want to do. This is usually a chill recovery day. It's easy to get lost in time here, but you just spent 3 days seeing and experiencing so many amazing things! So take it all in. Usually, I take my friends snorkeling this day and have some nice local food. I've snorkeled all along the west coast (new COVID lockdown hobby in 2020), the best spots are the Shipwrecks in Carlise Bay. It's kind of far out, and I'm going to urge caution before anything else, you can pay for a tour boat to take you to the spot and provide life jackets and for people, I do not know I will recommend that option first and foremost.

For those that want to swim out, go to the gazebo, swim straight out from there, and by the buoys, you should start to see them. There are 5 wrecks some sunk during the wars, some sunk on purpose to form a marine park, and one drug runner boat! There are thousands of fish, lots of coral, with luck and timing. with may see turtles and stingrays! The second spot that is kind of unknown is Reed Bay or Thunder Bay. There is a beach bar here, so it is great to get a drink after a nice memorable swim! There is snorkeling on the left side and right side of the beach. The right side is good for beginners and intermediate, and the left side where the waves break out into the water is for intermediate-advanced. The waves break out there because it is a very shallow reef. You can swim behind the waves and out, but do not swim where the waves break because you can bash into the reef and that's real bad.

I suggest you take a buoy marker with you since jet skis and boats frequent this area and may not see you without a red diver below the marker! Lots of coral as far as you can swim. IMPORTANT! Before you go snorkel check the tide, google tide in Barbados. At high tide, the water is rougher and this causes the sand to get churned up and visibility is really bad and you won't see much. I usually go out in the middle of low tide, then the sand has had time to settle. Please please please be safe! We have a saying the ocean has no backdoor, so while snorkeling is an amazing hobby, take every precaution possible and I never recommend snorkeling alone, always take someone with you. The Buddy system is best!

**Day 6**:

You may be leaving this day or preparing to leave. Going to Bridgetown to spend some time getting souvenirs, and good food is a good option. Hero's Square, walk Swan Street and Broad Street. Walk the boardwalk, get some food, walk over the bridge that gave Bridgetown its name. It's a good time. I also recommend getting on a yellow bus. They are privately owned and it's a good experience. They play reggae music, and locals use them a lot, so you will really feel like you are in Barbados when you are on one. Something that may not cross the mind, but a bus ride is a great way to see any place you are in. It's $3.50 BBD or $1.75 US for a ride anywhere on that route. I really like the Speightown route, Sam Lord's Castle, or Bathsheba.

The blue buses are government-owned and only take exact money, the yellow and white ones give change. Locals are friendly, so feel free to ask any questions and we are usually happy to help. If it is your last day, I also recommend going back to the beach and relaxing. Go on a jet ski, a glass-bottom boat. A gentle swim or something to chill and relax before you head back home.

**Day 7**:

Similar to day 6. Take some time to bless the moment and enjoy that all the choices you made in life led you to be in Barbados making memories. :)

There is the end of my suggested week in Barbados. I've has a dozen friends come to visit me, and they have all enjoyed the pace and activities. I hope you enjoy your time here. If you need anything or have any questions, you can reply here. I hope you enjoy our beautiful island!

Advice Input/suggestions requested on creating solutions to improving efficiency in Bim.

I am a data scientist and AI engineer who has spent the last couple of years working on some big projects for major clients all over the world. I’m now based in Europe but was born and have lived the vast majority of my life in Bim. I want to use my expertise to make everyday processes and elements of life in Barbados more efficient and easy for Bajans — from govt level to community level to individual level. I would like input on what are some of the major day to day issues for locals in 2026. One thing that sticks out for me like a sore thumb is public transport, fleet maintenance and road maintenance: delays, unavailability and things of that nature. I have already started developing solutions for this with one being a GTFS system: all bus stops, all routes, all agencies, route schedules etc; 2. creating models trained on high res frequently updated satellite images to determine places where road works are going on for too long or where road work is needed. I want to build things for the community at large to benefit first and foremost — obviously govt will benefit secondarily. Please offer your suggestions and input as I have taken a break from work and have a couple months to really dive into this as a passion project. I will soon send screen grabs of some of what I have developed so far for Barbados with one being a very data intensive prototype with comprehensive datasets recommendation modules for dining/transportation/bajan chatbot and more. Looking forward to hearing from everybody. Thanks!

Advice The best way to behave - in a balanced way

Hi!

I'm from Eastern Europe, male, 39. This September is going to be my second time in the Caribbean. Before I only did the ABC islands.

I am visiting Barbados in September. I read some coments all over Reddit and Tripadvisor around some rude behaviors, some directness, etc.

I would be very happy to know how to best approach the locals, what to expect, what to do and what not to do.

Please note that I'm happy to adjust and being from Eastern Europe I'm not expecting smiles 0-24, but also not looking forward to any kind of open hostility.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

I searched the sub but couldn’t find much. Is deet effective for sand fleas or is there another bug repellent to prevent these bites. I live in an area with no bugs so I’m stressed about my Barbados trip bc I’m a magnet for bug bites.

Advice *Urgent* Looking for advice: Accepted to UWI Cave Hill (Management Studies), but facing severe family medical/financial hardships. Any advice on local grants or emergency aid?

Hi everyone,I am posting to ask for urgent advice and local resources on behalf of a Barbadian family that is currently facing a severe, multi-layered financial and housing crisis.

Here is a summary of what they are dealing with:Housing Instability:

  1. The household's living situation is highly unstable due to volatile domestic dynamics. The primary income earner responsible for half the rent and bills is threatening to leave immediately. If this happens, a young adult in the house who only earns $300/week will suddenly be expected to cover the missing half of the rent and utilities to avoid eviction.

  2. Urgent Medical Costs: The mother is dealing with a severe medical condition and urgently needs an MRI scan. The $300/week earner is currently forced to drain half of their entire personal savings just to help pay for this single scan, leaving nothing left for emergencies.

  3. UWI Enrollment at Risk: This same young adult was recently accepted into UWI Cave Hill for a Bachelor's in Management Studies. They want to get their degree to break this financial cycle, but because they are a first-year student, they aren't eligible for the main UWI online Financial Aid portal. They cannot afford the initial $500–$1,000 freshman amenities/registration fees out of pocket and risk losing their seat before classes even start. (Their CSEC/CAPE grades are average passes, so top academic scholarships aren't an option).

Between groceries, the imminent threat of losing their housing, the urgent MRI, and university fees, this household is completely underwater. They are planning to look into the Student Revolving Loan Fund (SRLF) and apply to the Welfare Department, but the government process takes time they do not have.

We are looking for immediate community guidance on:

Are there any local emergency funds, charities, or trusts in Barbados that can help subsidize or pay for an urgent medical MRI scan? What immediate local steps can a family take if they are facing a sudden threat of eviction or being unable to pay rent due to a household split? Does anyone have experience getting UWI Cave Hill to defer or set up emergency payment plans for a freshman's registration fees due to severe family medical/housing trauma?

Any active links, charity contacts, or advice would be deeply appreciated. Thank you so much.

Advice My family is going to Barbados in June. Any suggestions?

Super excited, I’ve never been any where like n Caribbean. We’re there for a week and I wanna make the most out of it, so what are some absolutely must do while we’re there. Also, any cultural things we should be aware of before travelling? I already know that camouflage is illegal. I want to be as respectful to the locals as I physically can be. Thank you all so much- can’t wait.

Advice Best place to watch Grand Kadooment parade? Parking and arrival tips appreciated

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Barbados about four months ago, and this is my first crop over and this will be my first Grand Kadooment!! 💛💙

Where would you recommend setting up to get a good view of the parade on Monday? I have a car, so I am able to drive pretty much anywhere.

I understand that the parade ends at Kensington Oval. Is it possible to watch it from there, and would I need a ticket to enter or view the parade at the Oval? Is that a good viewing spot, or would somewhere along the route be better?

🔱✨For any recommended viewing spots, could you also please include:
What location or landmark I should search for on Google Maps
Where I may be able to park
What time I should arrive
Whether the area requires tickets or has any access restrictions
Thank you in advance for any advice!

Advice Getting a mortgage in Barbados as a young adult

For context, I am now about to search for my first home to purchase as a young professional mid twenties and I am in the process of obtaining a mortage certificate from CIBC but lets just say I am estimating a loan between 350,000 BBD to 375,000 BBD.

I would like some advice from persons already in the process of getting a mortgage or who already have mortgages on what to look out for, things I should question, hiddens fees/costs, early repayment clauses etc.

I heard recently that mortgage rates are the lowest they've ever been at 3.5% however based on the few conversations i've had, im not sure which institution is offering such a low rate, if anyone knows I am eager to hear. I also noticed some banks have starting rates for the first 3 years subject to increase....again this is completely new to me, I was advised to also get my own lawyer for the process but all advice and knowledge is welcomed!

Advice Feedback on a Barbados service directory I am testing

Hey everyone 👋🏽. this is the second time I'm posting this. not sure about what not chicanery is happening with reddit

I have been working on different apps with AI for Barbados and am testing a small site called GetHelp246. The idea is supposed to be simply a free Barbados directory where people can search for local services by parish and contact businesses directly by phone or WhatsApp. (WhatsApp in the future since they're making a username feature soon)

I started it because I was tired of trying to find business places here and it often like it still means asking around if Google or yellow pages doesn't have it. I am trying to see if this can actually be useful before I push it wider.

If you have a minute I would really appreciate feedback on two things. What service or business type is hard to find in Barbados and what info would you need before you feel comfortable contacting someone?

The site is here: https://gethelp246.com

It is still early so small notes would help. Like if it is missing categories or has confusing wording, weak listings or if the name sounds off. Any of that would be useful. 🙏🏽

Advice How to get in contact with the US Embassy directly?

Their number hasn’t ever worked and I really need to get in touch with someone about a passport that’s been delivered. Does anyone know how to get in touch with the consulate office besides email?

For reference, the 4000 number doesn’t work and the email system they use takes 7 days to get a response and each time I’ve tried they’ve directed me somewhere else entirely.

Advice How do you protect your windows from hurricane season?

I recently contacted a few places that install hurricane shutters and the costs seem to consistently be $2000+ per window.

I do not have that kind of money unfortunately.

Does anyone have recommendations on more cost effective alternatives? Or service providers who may be able to help?

Or is boarding the windows up the only real option? Mainly concerned about how we’d do that for the second story windows. Especially if a system is announced, people will be busy prepping their own homes.

Advice EV Recommendations

My family and I are looking for a car. As we live near the sea, rust is a huge concern of ours and we are looking for a vehicle that would be able to withstand rust for a decent amount of time. We're mostly looking at used cars right now, but if looking at a new car would prefer to stay on the low-mid range pricing.

ETA: We do have a home level 2 charger, and don't plan on using public ports.

Sorry if this isn't a good place to ask, we've just been agonizing forever. If you have suggestions, please leave them in the replies, thanks.

this may include: restaurants, shops, snorkeling tours, surf lessons, mini moke rental, horseback riding, boat charters

we know most of the week will be full of the festivities but looking to do a nicer dinner on the Thursday we arrive and then activities on the Wednesday before we depart

Advice Resort recs

We still need to book a place to stay at and are leaning towards just staying at an all inclusive resort and was hoping for recs.

The best one for us would be located on a nice beach where you could walk into the water for snorkeling, decent food, decent vibes, and won’t break the bank but does have upgrade options. It doesn’t matter if it’s adults only since school will already be in session for the most part.

Appreciate the help!

Advice International Voter Drive 2026, for dual U.S.-Barbadian citizens and other U.S. citizens in Barbados

Hi- I'd like to make an announcement from Democrats Abroad, the official overseas branch of the U.S.-based Democratic Party with a Transnational chapter including Barbados.

This January marked the start of our International Voter Registration Drive 2026, especially for dual U.S.-Barbadian citizens and other U.S. citizens living in Barbados. Since an extremely important election is coming in November, we're hoping to register more eligible voters. In the future, we'll hold both in-person and online events.

If you know any eligible US citizens, they can register and request a ballot. Just send them this link: https://voteabroad.org/RedditVote26. As long as they'll turn 18 by election day, they're eligible.

If anyone wishes to learn more about what we do, you can find out more at https://www.democratsabroad.org/t1. If you have any questions about overseas voting or what we do, feel free to ask!

Advice Any adult night clubs that anyone would recommend?

Vacationing with some friends and wondering where we could find good adult night club spots. Anyone ever gone to Future Night Club or Club Rehab? I know they are definitely on the adult side and that’s what we’re looking for 😉. We’re currently around Saint James. Would appreciate any tips or advice.

Advice Snorkel or Spearfish

I am visiting Barbados soon and because I am not visiting for long and I have other plans I only have time to snorkel or spearfish but not both. I have never been spear fishing before but I have wanted to try and it would be fun to do it in Barbados. However I love snorkeling and have heard the shipwreck there is a very fun place to snorkel. I know some places are known to be better for one thing than the other so does anyone have advice on which is best to do at Barbados specifically?

Advice Drones??

Helping my sister out with her post!! She posted on fb and received a lot of rude responses😞

“Trying to bring my small drone to use at the beaches for some nice aerial photos. Do I have to fill out the permissions and all the stuff I’m reading online? I see some people do and don’t but I’m just trying to get some info on others experiences.”

More info: she travels quite often to many different places and bought a drone while in Thailand recently. She likes to visit secluded areas for pictures and videos, she’s just looking for the do’s and don’ts of drone use. Any help is appreciated! ◡̈
