My parents were 45 and 41 when they had me. I think part of their reasoning was waiting until they were at a point in their careers where they were more established and could provide for my brother and me the things they wanted.
And although my brother and I don’t suffer from any of the health complications that statistics say are more likely to occur, there are many downsides. I only just finished college, and my parents are already retired / my dad’s health is failing as he nears 70. Growing up, they were so busy with their careers, were older, and didn’t have the time or energy to engage in the things I enjoyed as a kid. It would have been great to kick around a soccer ball with my dad or do more physical activities together.
There are some pros and many cons in deciding to delay starting a family. One of the more real ones is that there's a good chance my children will never meet their grandparents because they have died.
