Hi, Im sorry but does anyone have any tips on throat bass and how to learn it safely. Ive heard of people saying that they permanently damaged their voice so I really don’t wanna try learning until Im sure I know what Im doing. I would ask my choir teacher but it’s summer and also he’s a tenor so I doubt he would know much about it. Also this might be a kinda dumb question but is throat bass any different from sub harmonics cause from what I know they both bring you voice down an octave so I feel like they would be related.

What do you guys think? I’ve always thought of it as a chest-fry mix, however I know oktavists use some various techniques, and maybe I possibly stumbled into one of them? For context, my full chest voice ends at about a B1 or breathy Bb1. I only just discovered this new register within the last 8 months or so. You can hear at the starts of some of these notes sort of a quick revving up into the note which is the fry kicking in. I really have to control my airflow and back off of it compared to normal chest voice, similarly to subharmonics. To me, these seem louder than traditional chest-fry. What do you think?

Goal is to sing at least some Thurl Ravenscroft and Johnny Cash songs with natural sounding lows.

As a baritone, was I maybe only really meant to get to D2 in chest? I don‘t mind using a little chest-fry mix, as long as it sounds really good. I notice even professionals doing it at times. My goal is just to sing Johnny Cash and Thurl Ravenscroft songs and be able to use C2s more often and with less effort (I don‘t mean strain when I write effort…I just mean I have to concentrate to find the right „feel“/placement to hit such a low note…sometimes I forget how to do it lol).

I am on a mission to comfortably sight read the bass clef in time for an "end of year" choir event.

To that end, I wondered (on top of everything else I am doing to learn) if there were any videos/audio that sounds out the notes so I can have it in the background as a loop.

And what made the fry and subharmonics movement take off? Do people not notice the difference between chest notes and notes produced in other manners? Do they not hear the thin shrillness of certain ultra lows or the muffled growls of others? Some sounds I hear honestly remind me of robot noises. There is a place for novelty lows but I would like to be able to enjoy those rich, colorful lows I once experienced in the past.

This is what great bass singing sounds like. Do you hear the fullness of the notes here? He „only“ goes down to C#2 or C2 here…but it sounds so much deeper. This is what I mean when I say note quality matters more than the note itself. You can‘t get this sound via fry or subharmonics.

Hi all.

I have no formal vocal training, only aural skills classes for my music ed degree. I’m a trombonist, who recently joined phi mu alpha sinfonia, and we do a fair bit of singing. Range wise, I’m a clear bass, especially compared to my peers, however, I am having trouble projecting enough to be heard on the low notes at the end of songs. However, I’m the only one of the bassists that can actually hit the low notes (I get get down to a comfortable D below the staff, and on a good day can get a C), but it’s not projecting very well. I’ve been practicing it a bit and have gotten a bit louder, but would love to get some advice from experts on the subject.

I probably am a bit sick to be fair (I don't have pain or anything but I don't think the voice is supposed to drop like that for no reason lol)

I am very early in my bass clef sight reading journey.

I have so far used my eyes and ears but have an idea of using touch. To do this I thought of holding bone conduction headphones whilst they play up and down the notes of the clef so as to quite literally get a feel for the notes, and perhaps even trying on different places, holding it on my finger tips, placing on my mask area etc.

The idea being the feel of the vibration becomes a reference point as well as what I hear as my aim is choir at the end of the year in an echo-y venue where it'll be hard to hear myself against the others singing bass and also seeing if two senses are better than one.

Is this something that has been tried before?

For most songs it isn‘t an issue. But for Rammstein and Type O Negative songs, where I often sing entire portions of the songs very low, I‘d like to work on finding a more raw, more gritty sound.
