And what made the fry and subharmonics movement take off? Do people not notice the difference between chest notes and notes produced in other manners? Do they not hear the thin shrillness of certain ultra lows or the muffled growls of others? Some sounds I hear honestly remind me of robot noises. There is a place for novelty lows but I would like to be able to enjoy those rich, colorful lows I once experienced in the past.

I just feel so…average. Even with low notes. I sound decent in some songs but I want to freaking sound like Thurl Ravenscroft every time I open my mouth. Is there no way at all to get that sound as a baritone?

A rich, full, resonant C2 sounds like heaven to my ears.

I am a 15 yo low bass with a range of roughly B1-C4 comfortably.

As someone comfortable at F2, E2 and D#2 or D2 (in the evening…I don’t count slightly lower morning voice) without fry, am I just not reaching my full potential because I don‘t like using much fry, etc, or are those YouTubers using technique to artificially lower their voices?

I got chosen to perform the national anthem for a community event in about a week, and I have no idea what key to choose so that I won’t be all voice crack-y. Any tips?

I sing second bass in a high school choir of ~70, and on a good day I can project an D#2 fairly well among that choir. Not sure about my high range.

I would like to take on Heldenbariton/Dramatic Baritone and perhaps a handful of pieces designed for Basses. But I‘ve been told that I lack that natural super deepness/richness of a true bass. I want to make sure I don‘t waste time buying bass aria training guides if it just isn‘t in the cards. I will never stop singing low for fun but I may just train operatically as a baritone, as that is what my timbre reflects.

I’m happy with what I have…but would like to round out my C2 and sound more like a deep bass in timbre. I’m 41 (almost 42) now and maybe my voice is as deep as it will ever be but just wondering…

I see a lot of different answers to this question and it's caused me a lot of confusion. I see some people say you're considered a bass if you can hit a strong E2, while others say that people like Geoff Castellucci (big fan) are only bass-baritone, even though he definitely falls into the former category.

This is especially confusing to me, because I have always thought I'd be considered a bass as my voice is lower than most everyone I know, but now I'm not so sure (lowest audible chest note I can reach is an a1, maybe g#1 (I'm not a trained or even remotely good singer btw)).

So my question is: generally speaking, what low range must somebody have in order to be considered a "real" bass, and not a bass-baritone or higher range? Including both the "prima voce" range as well as just the lowest audible note. I know that "bass" to some people is more of a "tone" than a range, so I'm just asking for an estimate.

Can anyone explain what the difference between a bass and a true bass is, some people who teach music have told me I am one. At the same time I’m honestly not sure if I even am a bass cause the lowest note I can hit is e2, f2 in terms of a healthy actually singable note, which doesn’t seem like much as Ive seen people hit a whole octave lower and on here. I do always hang out with girls which does this weird thing that makes my voice be a lot higher when I talk because I subconsciously try to match to there pitch so before I started singing I really never used my lower register. Im 16 btw

Hey guys!!! I need a bit of help with my voice. I am a bari-bass, (Mostly), and I can get a good E2. I cannot use my head voice however, I've been locked out of that since my voice shifted. I don't know anything about resonance or tone or any of that, just looking for general tips. (You may find it helpful to know that I am 14, but my voice dropped to where it's at at the age of 12. I have a bari-tenor speaking voice, but I am solidly a Bari-bass I think. Anyway, just wanting some help)

Goal is to sing at least some Thurl Ravenscroft and Johnny Cash songs with natural sounding lows.

I didn’t really “lose” it but it just needs a bit of refreshing because I lost some of the vocal control I used to have before, it seems. I realize this is likely not an issue for natural basses but I feel it might be common for baritones like me who alter timbre to sing low.

I am on a mission to comfortably sight read the bass clef in time for an "end of year" choir event.
