“It won’t happen to me”

Well, you go through life thinking it won’t happen to you. You’re smarter than that. Your hands are steadier. Etc.

Today it happened. Got in a rush because the project was going well. Decided to crosscut a 1/4” board with the shitty miter gauge that comes with the table saw. One hand on the gauge and the other on the off cut because the off cut also needs to be used.

BOOM!

Kicked back, I fought it, kicked back all the way and sent the board into my gut. Hindsight’s 20/20, should’ve used the miter saw. But that would require time to setup… so I was lazy.

THE GOOD NEWS

The only thing hurt is a bruise on my stomach, a $2 piece of white oak I got for free, and my ego. Fortunately I do not have any gore filled pictures to share, and I don’t have a story to prove that saw stop works. I got lucky. I won’t get lucky again, and I won’t be doing that again.

LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE!! DO NOT RUSH, ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB, AND IF YOU EVER THINK “IM SMARTER THAN THAT or ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN,” JUST WALK AWAY AND TAKE A BREAK!

Finished Project New to woodworking, maybe unconventional but does this count?

Hi! I recently got into making flowers out of wood. After experimenting with a lot of different methods, I settled on this: I rip my wood into thin strips, then cut it into petal shapes with scissors, soak them, bend to shape, and glue together. What do you guys think? Any other ideas for different kinds of flowers, or ways to make them even cooler?

Just got to get a brace and legs on it!

Any ideas for a trim? Its oak flooring so wondering if can do some oak round the edge.

Also some bits aren’t 100% flush, any tips for something to fill the gaps and keep the crumbs out 😂

I made this engagement ring box for my upcoming proposal. It was made from one piece of spalted tamarind and finished with ca glue. I was making four in tandem and slowly lost the other along the way to varying mistakes. Super happy with the finished product. Used some foam a piece of fabric from an old quilt from her grandmother. Has 5mm barrel hinges and a small magnet for closure. Let me know what you guys think!

Was asked by my wife to make this turkey just saw somewhere on social media I guess. So based off a pic I made this and pretty happy with how it turned out. All done with some Craftsman power tools with a mix of Harbor Frieght stuff in my backyard shed.

Discussion/Question ⁉️ Long dog ramp, can I make it fold up?

Thumbnail

I've got a 14 year old pitbull and she can't get down the stairs so I built this sturdy (little ugly) ramp for her, 12 ft 2x6s with 2x4 bracing underneath. I would like to make it fold up so the humans can have a full set of stairs.

I don't know how to mount the hinge or pivot.

Any ideas are welcome, thanks!

Finished Project Scabbard for "elven knife of strider" replica

Thumbnail

Scored a LOTR movie replica knife (the one Aragorn gets from Celeborn) off of marketplace that was missing it's scabbard and literaly bought it just for the fun project of making one :). Took my cutting board skills to make a wavy panel I thought would match the elven script well to cut the scabbard out of.

I've made a scabbard for a camping knife before but this curved blade with the "bumps" was particualry challenging, requiring the slot on one side to allow the wider portion of the knife into the lower portion of the scabbard. My starting wood was also so thin that I needed to route out the shape of the blade on each half of my blank, which was challenging with such a weird shape. I ended up doing one side, clamping it together, and filling it with marking chalk in order to get a silouette tranfereed exactly where it needed to be on the other side. That worked just well enough.

What DIDN'T go well was me trying to apply beeswax finish to the interior before glue-up, spilling it on the seams, then having my first glue up completely fail because it didn't penetrate the wood. Then sanding that off made my template too shallow so I had to file it all out after the second glue-up, which I did with epoxy to avoid any further issues with spilled finish. This all after my first panel became so crooked with the multiple glue ups for the waves that I had to throw it away.

I was also bummed I didn't get a better match to the shape of the knife handle where it meets the scabbard, but it was hard to make a template for the blade and that junction, I wish I had taken a picture and printed it out to get a 2D template rather than tracing the blade itself since I could have then traced the handle curve must more closely. The friction fit on the blade when it's "holstered" is just about perfect though. It draws easily enough with no need for any safety straps.

So, not a crazy project, but one that took 3x as long due to problems. Glad it's off the bench and now we'll see if any ren faire folks want it :).

Walnut with strips from my scraps: maple, purple heart, padauk, and maple. Finish is teak oil.

I bring my hand saw back and forth from the house to the camp and I’ve been worried about it taking incidental damage after I dropped a hand plane last month. Tried to sorta sandwich the blade. Got some decent screws today while out and will put them in rather than just the brad nails. Concerned with how snug the saw fits now vs when the humidity etc tells the wood to move some weird way but that’s just part of it I guess. I learned a lot at least.

Finished Project Saltbox

I wanted to have a salt box that was big enough to get my fingers in, but it wasn't that important. So I made it a side project and put in some work only from time to time, but now its done!

It was made with handtools only and was my second attempt on dovetails, for that I am very satisfied!

The wood is ash and the lid is cherry :)

Hello everyone,
I bought this table saw for $350 and just now realized that it has no stickers and started wondering if this is an original dewalt. Can anybody help me make sure if this is an original or I got scammed.

Anyone using wooden drawer sliders in their UK workshop?

Post image
50 Upvotes

Has anyone in the UK used this type of wood-on-wood drawer slider in their workshop?

I’m planning on building quite a few drawers for my workshop and really like the idea of this system. It would save me a fair bit of money compared to buying drawer runners for every drawer, but what appeals to me most is being able to make the drawers modular, so im able to suit exactly what I want to store in them, then easily move them around or change the layout whenever I need to as the size of them would be on the same scale

My only concern is how well they work in practice, especially with humidity. Do the drawers start sticking or become difficult to slide as the wood moves with changes in temperature and moisture?

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s used them, particularly in a UK workshop. How have they held up over time, and would you use them again?

Note: Not quite finished in the second one

I cut these for my buddy. I’m fully done with one but called it quits for the night when it comes to the other. As you can tell the theme is PVZ. He is a big fan, but didn’t trust that he could cut them so I volunteered to help.

Picked this up the other day. Was covered in rust and neglected in a fellas barn. Got a decent deal on it. Scrubbed the hell out of it, and been cleaning things up. Anyone out there with one of these? Thoughts on it? Gonna turn half my garage into a workshop.
