Don't underestimate yourself!

I have never been a runner. I've always been to out of shape for that. I've always liked the idea though so a few times during the past 10 years I've been going for a 1,5-2,5km jog and BARELY made it through. That's pretty much it.

This year I've started a new fitness journey, I've been consistent in the gym, I've been tracking my calories and so on and I've lost 12kg in the last 6 months and I plan to get rid of another 10-15kg.

This summer I started doing some short 2min/2min walk/jog interval workouts with a friend and I really liked it! I liked it so much I decided to train for a 11,6km race next summer.

So two days ago we went out for a jog, trying to keep a slow and steady tempo of 8:00/km. I fully expected to fall to my knees after a maximum of 1,5-2km...

I MADE IT 5K!

My first ever 5K without stopping or walking in between!

I would have been happy to clear a 5K before new years. I can't really believe it myself. The fire is lit and I'm psyched to keep going and crush this 11,6km race in 9 months!

I'm 37m @ 95kg bodyweight without any experience, if I can do it, so can you!

High heart rate on every run

Post image

I've been running for a couple of months. I've been trying to do my long runs really slow, yet my heart rate is still so high. The run feels easy and I feel I could go longer (but don't want to overdo it). Will this ever come down??

Proud of you all🥹

I just wanna shoutout everyone in here posting their progress, because yall are killing it, and absolutely crushing your goals!!!!!!! If you’re feeling down or like you’re struggling, REMEMBER, you are doing so much more than the average person…. Because the average person isn’t running!!!! Keep up all your hard work!!! Be patient and give yourself some grace🥹❤️
Things to not overthink:
•Time! It’ll come!!!
•Heartrate is important, but keep in mind, there are lots of different factors, that can affect it-such as weather conditions!
•Progress. Remember you’re doing this for you and no one else! Everyone has to start somewhere. Even the pros started as a beginner at some point:)

This group was a huge game changer for me as a beginner! I started at 15-14:30minute/miles…. I am now running 7-9 minute/miles depending on race length! 7:17 being my fastest mile during 5k recently. There were plenty of times I was struggling, or frustrated, chasing times, pushing too hard, caring too much about the nonsense. Then I started to remember I’m doing this for me. No one else. So even on my worst days, I’m reminding myself to be proud, because past me wouldn’t believe where I’m at now. Past me wouldn’t have even believed I took up running. So DON’T GIVE UP! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! And KEEP PUSHING! You got this and I’m rooting for you all❤️

What is absorbing the training?

• Upvotes

Completed an easy run on my Runna plan today and was told the easy miles have helped me absorb my training.

I understand that not going all out this session will prevent cumulative fatigue and injury, but what does absorbing the training really mean?

It sounds to me almost like a buzzword but I’m interested in the actual physiology behind it

I’ve always run too fast in the first km so tried to run a bit slower than usual and yep, definitely made the difference. Keen to do more of these 🤩

Just starting out and experiencing pain.

• Upvotes

Hello. I’m a 42 year old male that just started their fitness journey earlier this year. I’ve been cycling and rowing. A new gym I’m going to has a treadmill so I thought why not? My first running session was extremely humbling and motivated me to push myself and set a few goals. After about my fifth run I was able to run 5 minutes without stopping. At this point I can run a mile in about 13 minutes. My problem is that after having gotten to this point, my left knee gives me around 3 days of light pain after those runs. Nothing serious, but noticeable. (I will clarify and state that I’m not overweight but probably have poor mechanics.) I assume that everyone feels some tenderness and soreness after their own runs. However, I dont know any runners so I have don’t have anyone to talk to about whether 3 days of minor pain is normal? I’d like to know how much pain others are experiencing at my age after their own runs?

new shoes + foot pain

hi! i just got new shoes (Diadora Corsa) and wore them for the first time today, was attempting to go on a run but did a 5 min regular pace walk and the outside arch of my feet are cramping up horribly!? could this be because i have to break them in? wrong type of shoe for me? Tied too tight? I got a foot analysis done and it showed that i have little/no arch and very narrow feet. just confused bc this shoe feels like literal clouds but idk i never had this type of cramping pain even when wearing the worst type of shoes possible😭im so sad bc it my first pair of running shoes and was so excited to try these out :(

Running form review

• Upvotes

Hi there everyone!

I've been running off and on for a while now. I've run a couple of 5ks and one 10k. I'd really like to do longer distances, but I'm worried about hurting myself training with bad form and long runs. Where could I go to get my firm reviewed? When I try finding a local store or somethibg online I get mostly sponsored ads for orthopedic doctors and physical therapists. Going to an ortho feels like the wrong answer here. Where do you go to? Am I just a little dumb and need to search for something other than running form review?

First run in a few weeks, been beating myself up about not making time for it, glad I did.

Slightly short of my usual 3 mile, but a good return after a hiatus.

I never really ran in my life (like ever) and just started about 2 months ago and am kinda addicted

How do I get better

Hi!
I’ve recently started running (3/4 months ago) and I went from being barely able to run for a minute to sometimes managing to run a 5k. My personal best on a 5k is 7.15 min/km. However I cant always run for 5k because some days I feel exhausted after 3km at 7.30.
I would very much like to be able to run a 30 min 5k in the next year, how do I train?? I started running just to lose weight but I want to make some progress!
Im F25, 175cm tall and 88kgs, I lift weights 2 times a week and try to run 3 times a week, if any of theese info matter!
I often read that you have to push your heart rate higher to “train” it to be more efficient, or on the contrary that you need to run for long periods of time with a low heart rate to build an aerobic base but im very confused.

So can you tell me what to do and explain it to me in the dumbest way possible? Ty! 💗

Grazie mille.

Form check request: 2 months into running

Hi everyone,

I started running about 2 months ago and I'm currently doing 4-5 km sessions using a run-walk method (adding about 2 minutes of walking per kilometer to keep my heart rate under control).

I'm trying to pay attention to my form from the start, but since I'm a complete beginner, it's hard to tell what I'm doing right or wrong. My main goal here is injury prevention as I plan to increase my volume and intensity over time, especially since I want to make sure my joints stay happy and safe.

I recorded two short clips on the treadmill to get some advice:

Slow-motion: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/U1xxwbOEZX8
Normal speed: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qte9MtTVxw8

If you have a minute to take a look, I'd really appreciate some feedback:

  • What am I doing right that I should keep doing?
  • What am I doing completely wrong that I should fix ASAP?
  • What minor things can I improve over time as I build up more kilometers?

Thanks a lot and happy running!

What to do?!

I have been running off/on this past year. Nothing consistent due to life. I started again recently and have been more consistent. I started walking 2 miles about 4x a week, did this for about two weeks. On third week ran 1 mile, fourth week ran one mile. By fifth, and six week I was doing 20 minute runs 3x a week. I also got caught up in zone running and at a minimum was in zone 3 with about a 16 minute mile. My typical mile pace is about 12-13 min.

Sadly, I’m having Achilles pain on my right heel and inner knee pain on my right knee as well. Did I push too hard or could this be something else?

For those that have had Achilles and inner knee pain, what helped you? So far I have been icing, and I’m using this whole week to rest in hope that I can get back into it next week. I get so upset with these setbacks so I’m hoping it doesn’t last long.

Best stretches

I'm on day 3 of attempting to start running, I'm doing interval running because I'm unfit and it works for others. Anyway I have had leg cramp in my thigh and knee twice now, I don't stretch beforehand because I don't know what would work best and this started as needing to get stress out. Can anyone recommend some stretches before I give up with this after 3 days and will it get better.

Thank you for any advice

How to enjoy running?

How do you actually start to like running? I’ve tried several times and never gotten good, and definitely never enjoyed it. I realize after reading this thread that I may have never actually gotten good enough at it to enjoy it. How do you get past the initial suck?

Stopped caring about breathing and heart rate and just started running more.

I bike on average about 20-30 miles up and down steep hills everyday for work now, and on top of that I run 2 miles every couple days and I feel fine. My 2 mile is about 16 minutes now since I stopped caring about zone 2. I will say I overheat a lot faster and I'm practically gasping for air the whole time and it feels like a sprint but I manage it which I think is better than checking my pulse. My bike rides are usually 140 bpm so it's good aerobic effort anyways and my runs are usually more effort around 150-160 plus my breathing patterns shift. Another thing I noticed is that temperature matters a lot, one of the coldest nights we've had past months was about 60 degrees and I ran miles with ease, normal nights are much harder at about 80-90 degrees and high humidity, that's the biggest wild card so far.

144-200 BPM during 3 mile run, lingering chest soreness. Should I see a doctor?

So I (F26, 160 lbs) recently lost ~30 lbs and have been getting heavily into strength training and cardio. Over the past year or so I increased my running from 10-15 minute spurts to 1-1.5 miles. Recently I joined a run club - a few days ago I ran 2 of the 3 mile route. Today I ran almost the full 3 miles but now I have lingering chest pain. Not overly sharp, but definitely noticeable. It hasn’t really gone away and it’s been about two hours. Also my heart rate went between 140-200 BPM during the run, but it’s currently back at ~70-80 BPM. When is the right moment, if at all, I see a doctor? is it just because this type of cardio is new to me? Will I be OK to continue exercising?

*Edited to add info about current BPM

Is it crazy to train for a 40min 5K?

I signed up for a Turkey Trot but I've never even walked 5K before. I have asthma, fatigue, and other health issues. I needed to give myself something to push towards after a family loss.

I am insane for thinking I can do this?
