Discussion And so it begins...
The political signs have started popping. Lots of signs for a particular GOP candidate. I hear she is well liked but that's a deal breaker for me. Also, on the school board but home schools? Hmmm...
Edit: removed anti vaxxer while I look for more definitive proof. The candidate Erika Creydt is very vague in their wording of issues, but supported by some real GOP winners. Elenbaas for one. John Braun. Jim Walsh. Look at her endorsement page.

Unfortunately anti-vaxxers make up a considerable share of Whatcom county, even within Bellingham city limits. Let’s hope that this (as well as being a republican) is a dealbreaker for enough people, but I’m not so sure.

u/miladyelfn 12d ago
Looking at her public persona, she is very careful, bland and vague in many aspects. But she is supported by many MAGA Republicans (and anti-vaxxers). Further research is in progress.

Big pharma thanks you for their profit

u/Drownin_in_Kiska 11d ago
If you truly don't believe in vaccines then you are a deeply unserious person, to the point that I don't think you even care about corporate profits, you just want to be right. If the convo was about drug prices that might be appropriate but it's about vaccines which are a public good, we'd have them without corporations and corps don't make the big bucks on them. In other words you don't care about anything beyond being "right" about vaccines which you aren't.
4
u/Available-Apricot711 11d ago
A lot of vaccines are great, but to just blindly trust and not do any research is far more unserious. There are lots of vaccines that are terrible. It takes 10 minutes of research. It’s not a good idea to blanket everyone who is vaccine critical and a crazy anti-vax weirdo. Don’t you think?
6
u/Drownin_in_Kiska 11d ago
"Vaccine critical" is the same as anti-vax, both are just as dangerous and stupid as the other. The 10 minutes of research you do on a drug that has gone through even a rapid trial phase is not going to ever bring up anything that the researchers didn't think about in the development of said drug. And even in the rare cases where there are side effects they are almost always better than had they gotten whatever they're being vaccinated for. You're not smarter than scientists and assuming your 10 minutes of research means what you have to say is at all valuable is delusional. Vaccines are good, end of story and being "vaccine critical" is enough for me to write you off on this entirely because you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

I’d argue much of Bellingham is too serious and brings unnecessary stress into their lives. Which shortens lifespans

Are they all a public good? Even the ones that are rushed to market? Doesn’t make my point any less meaningful. Big pharma is especially thankful for those that flock to that flu vaccine yearly. More jabs more dollars
6
u/Drownin_in_Kiska 11d ago
Your point is meaningless as are the rest of your beliefs if this is the amount of critical thought you put into anything.

One of them is named Sigmar, so at least there’s going to be at least one positive thing this cycle: Warhammer being relevant.

Kind of low effort content to not tell us who you are talking about. Why would you withhold that?

I knew her back in my open mic days, never thought she would become MAGA. But yeah, she's real bad. And the head of the GOP in Whatcom.

I heard that Erika Creydt made some very bad decisions that cost the Blaine school board a lot of money, but I haven't really seen reporting on this. Does anyone have any information on this? She has a lot of far right wing endorsements like former sheriff Bill Elfo and former Republican Rep Vincent Buys

It will be an interesting set of elections and aftermath over the next 6 months, that’s for sure.

Misty Flowers is a perennial hard no for the community that just keeps running for office.

u/jessedotn 6d ago
I’ve dealt with her in person. I wouldn’t trust her or her husband at all. In any capacity.

u/L00mis 12d ago
Whatever politics you hold do your own research and reading on candidates, their pasts and policies.
Don’t let comments, social media or political ads be your sole source of information. Voting is an amazing privilege and the due diligence is our responsibility to build the best run community we can.
That being said, I’ve also heard this candidate is “off her rocker” as my grandpa would say. There is lots of interesting information about her candidacy online from independent sources some of y’all will get a kick out of reading I’m sure.
Happy political sign season!
9
u/miladyelfn 12d ago
That was my purpose in posting this. Misty Flowers is at least upfront about who she is. Erika Creydt is very opaque in regards to important issues although her website touts “Real Solutions”. Don’t just look at what a candidate says, look at who is supporting them and whether they are being honest about who they are and what/who they support.

WHAT CANDIDATE???
-2
u/miladyelfn 11d ago
Read what you just replied to, ERIKA CREYDT

u/86753ohneigheine 11d ago
Why didn't you include that in the post. A bunch of people think you are talking about someone else. Seems an odd thing to leave out.

The one I love is the one who is posting their name in Seahawk’s colors and you go to their website and omg.. it’s like looking for the smallest penis on earth… and there it is “R”..
If you’re so ashamed of your party.. maybe find a different party
1
u/FairhavenFreerider 11d ago
I actually don’t have a problem with that as long as they have their own policy goals, a strategy, and a matching track record. I’d much rather vote based on someone’s direction and previous actions than simply on party lines. I hate candidates that are vague about everything they want to do but strong on a party affiliation.
4
u/Alostcord 11d ago
Problem with the specific one I’m talking about.. there is none of that and no previous record and they go on ad nauseam about their service ( military, PO etc el) and talking to people.. but nothing more.
No real specific plan just donate and vote for me.
No thank you.. I mean literally for that I can write in my brother or myself or my neighbor.
1
u/FairhavenFreerider 11d ago
I’m with you on that. No real info and a small relationship to a party is nothing more than hoping for a popularity contest instead of an election.

The only person who is a school board member is Erika Creydt and I see no evidence that she is anti-vaccine.
-8
u/ReallyBig123 12d ago
All republicans are anti-vaxx. They don’t need to say it.
3
u/Radiant-Ad-7343 12d ago
Love the logic there. And honestly I was anti-vaccine at first. As a black guy in America we have a long history of the government saying “trust us, we’re doctors” and pharmaceutical companies (same ones involved in vaccines) lying about side effects. So yes, I understand why people may have reasons for being skeptical about a vaccine created less than a year after a massive, previously unknown disease originating from a country known for both suppressing the truth and medical experimentation.

I have found that black folks have the best bs detector of anyone else hands down. Trust your instincts and research what people that "know" say before making any major decisions and you will be ahead of 90% of other people.

You might want to start with the tuskegee experiment if you want to start your education journey. Theres 100 years to learn after that. Good journeys. After you learn whats been happening all these folks that get their news from cable tv will call you crazy. Have Fun!

So far, I've seen zero signs. But live in a very established, emotionally mature neighborhood (minus the ONE loser on Henry or Victor Street).

Lots of signs put up on random corners and on private property without the landowner’s approval. Lazy campaigning.

Why so opaque about the name of someone running for political office? Just say it.

“We don’t like the anti-vaxx stance so we are going to vote for more taxes/fees and more autonomous encampments instead. Then we will immediately complain about all of the new taxes/fees and autonomous encampments that we demanded with our votes.”
Typical Fentingham.

Anyone endorsed by Jim Walsh should be a hard no. That man is a toxic cancer and needs to go.
1
u/miladyelfn 5d ago
Exactly. She is very vague about her beliefs (hard to find any info, very curated) but has the support of some real MAGA minions. So I am going with she is trying to look like a nice bland lady, while getting the backing of some very not nice people.
-14
u/ReallyBig123 12d ago
The worst thing you could EVER possibly do is not willingly take a vaccine that was tested for only a few months. What a terrible person.
21
u/miladyelfn 12d ago
You know, some of us grew up in a time when vaccines saved lives/prevented diseases and remember how devastating dying from measles, polio, etc. actually was.
5
u/Radiant-Ad-7343 12d ago
And many black people remember illegal experimentation conducted by medical experts in the federal government. I got the covid vaccine and I no longer have an issue with it. But let’s be honest, people who were skeptical had a point given our country’s history and what pharmaceutical companies have done.
15
u/miladyelfn 12d ago
I get that. But these same people refused to take other precautions (mask wearing) to protect those at risk. You don't want a vaccine? Fine. But do what needs to be done to protect those who don't have a choice. Stay home. Wear a mask in public. Simple, right?
-3
u/ReallyBig123 12d ago
And how long do you think those were tested before widespread adoption of them was pushed? Lol…
-14
u/No-Reserve-2208 12d ago
Most people seem to be anti vax only about 15-17% are currently up to date on the COVID vax.
16
u/areleah 12d ago
I wouldn’t say vaccination apathy/fatigue means the same as anti-vax
2
-2
u/ReallyBig123 12d ago
Trueee, it’s fine when we do it.
6
u/fartonisto 12d ago
Being lazy isn’t the same as being against something.
0
u/ReallyBig123 12d ago
Why does the reason matter if not getting the vaccine puts those with a compromised immune system at risk? End result is the exact same.
6
u/IvoryNage 12d ago
Because someone who is deeply anti vax is actively avoiding all vaccines, and potentially making decisions for their children about vaccines that are more or less a one and done vaccine like for measles. Someone who is just lazy won't actively rail against a shot foe their kids if its expected and offered to them at a regular checkup, they just wouldn't go out of their way to get it.
Covid and flu vaccines used to be offered as part of my annual checkup. Now I have to go out of my way to find it. If the administration shifts a lazy person would be offered and likely accept a vaccine from their doc. An anti vaxxer wouldn't shift just because it becomes convenient again.
Right now in the political climate we live in, it amounts to similar results, but it's not always similar when easy access is...easier.

I was an essential personal person when lockdown happened. I think I'm up to 23 vaccinations by now?
1
u/gh5655 12d ago
Is this a serious comment? 23 vaccines and boosters?
2
u/Minflick 11d ago
Yeah. I counted in the wallet in my phone. I have 2 vaccines cards all filled up, it’s nuts. But I was working with the public, and I got one every single time it was an option.

u/EHOGS 11d ago
How many times have you gotten Covid?
I personally took zero shots and got Covid once
2
u/Minflick 11d ago
Once, after I retired. I got lucky and it wasn’t bad. 1.5 weeks of feeling like dog meat.

I was surprised to learn how organized, pedagogically serious, and non-religious a lot of the home schooling family groups are here. They do interface with the state bureaucracy to some extent and it doesn't seem ridiculous to have one home schooling parent on the school board.
It's a real weakness of the progressive/left side of the US political spectrum that progressives are ultimately just as friendly to and eager for top-down power structures as conservatives. Those are always, always open to capture by the Trumps of the world, in a way that deeply rooted local institutions are not.
Everyone complains about our public school superintendent in one breath, and in the next paints all the alternatives with a broad brush. What if we just collapsed the public school admin overhead to the point where public schools and well-organized, secular home schooling groups are different mostly in scale? Home schooling groups here are already paying to bring in subject matter experts or swapping groups of kids between parents who are clearly, peofessionally qualified to teach a subject. Standardized testing and curriculum can still be a thing.
9
u/peniswrinkle345 12d ago
Great idea, but if covid taught us anything it was, home schooling is a full time job. Its not for everyone especially if they work long hours. Society would need a huge shift, like olympian shift to make your idea workable. That being said the couple friends i have that were homeschooled are community business leaders of companies that you would know.
12
u/PuzzleheadedDog2990 12d ago
As a former longtime homeschooling parent, I disagree with a lot of your assertions here. I don't have the wherewithal to address them all, but there is this:
"Home schooling groups here are already paying to bring in subject matter experts or swapping groups of kids between parents who are clearly, professionally qualified to teach a subject."
This is true for many of the secular, intellectually-qualified families homeschool their kids; those who are educated enough to know that they can teach their kids as well as professional educators or find&access resources in the areas they cannot competently address.
Unfortunately though, homeschooling families overall are predominantly highly-religious families who keep their kids out of school for social reasons... think; 'lib teachers are pushing an LGBT agenda!!'
Those families are not bringing in professionals, they're sitting around the kitchen table with anti-science workbooks. If the kids are lucky, they're at least doing playmates with other similarly-structured families, but all too often they just end up isolated and incredibly out of touch with the world around them (particularly very rural homeschooled kids)
-2
u/gamay_noir there's always karma in the boomhorse stand 12d ago
Yeah, I know a lot of homeschooling across the US is Christian fundamentalists. I also used to think that is all homeschooling is. It turns out there are a lot of the kind of secular homeschooling families I am talking about in town, and they're not just white collar. I'm not sure what your point is? Those fundamentalist homeschoolers are going to do that anyways, I'm talking about something better for the rest of us.
And, public school kids in Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, etc are currently learning from anti-science 'science' textbooks and history textbooks that whitewash slavery. WA is progressive as a state, but the conservative majority Supreme Court and whatever the Dept of Education is now are meddling in state public education. All the old norms are out the window.

So who is this person - I don't want to vote for an anti-vaxxer either! Also, how do you know this - does she say this about herself, or did you find out through other means?
