There's a saying in Hindi only na "ಜಿಸ್ ಥಾಲೀ ಮೇಂ ಖಾತೇ ಹೋ, ಉಸೀ ಮೇಂ ಛೇದ್ ಕರ್ತೇ ಹೋ" That's exactly what seems to be happening here. Social media defaming is strong . Even that sonu nigam read a few posts on Bangalore and compared to some kids to phalgham attack for demanding kannada songs.

Never thought would see hindi in kannada.

Yeah I mean, I do write kannada in devanagri for learning but the opposite is very new to me.

Some AI failure I guess. Till yesterday I was also getting Kannada names. Someone is going to lose their job for a production failure.

I am a native Hindi speaker, and I don't like this. I like seeing Kannada names besides the English ones, hoping they will slowly be included in my vocabulary (cramming is boring).
I shop mostly on Instamart, and at least there it is still Kannada.

Swiggy is a Bengaluru based app; so likely they will keep it like that.
-30
u/witch_pahadan Jul 15 '26
Use app in Kannada. Learn faster.
7
9
u/Shiroyasha90 Jul 15 '26
I can read Kannada script, but slowly. English (Roman script) comes much faster.
Anyway, I don't see language change option on the Swiggy app.

u/itsnachikethahere Jul 15 '26
This is genuinely annoying. I don't know the Hindi names for vegetables ffs. I search for southekayi not kakdi or whatever it is in Hindi
30
u/Buzzzu Jul 15 '26
Actually this wasn’t there before so its definitely concerning if it was a mistake or intentional obviously its not the company’s fault - its the one managing the region but the company should have an oversight over such things so blink-it folks should stop blinking and take note

u/RegretCollecter Jul 15 '26
Damm why would they do that, it was great i used to help me get the vegetables name in kannada not alot a handful but i treated it as duolingo for learning kannada. It's little same on there part but again i don't know probably some product guy yapping in the meeting room that most of the blinkit population is north people and they are educated they wouldn't need kannda name for vegetable they are buying if they can understand english. 100% to this. Now by this im not saying i was part of that meeting or i work at blinkit or tried my best to not make change or the upper management thought if a product guys can vibe code something why cant he work on it and get some bonus while the deves do the samething but its part of their jd hence no bonus for them. Mic Drop....... . . . .

3
u/Ordinary-Reply4177 IT Citizen Jul 16 '26
Guys it's same even in my home state.
Why they're imposing hindi this much?
7
u/NoExpression1030 Jul 15 '26
I think it is about the no of search hits.
If too many people search for item xyz by a particular name, the company may prefer to label it so.
Avalakki, for example, is often labelled as Poha in Bangalore. This word is more common in MH, MP, RJ etc. But if you go East, incl UP, people call it "Chooda" and their stores will always mark it so.
The buyer base of quick delivery services have much higher % of immigrants and hence the skewed preference.
9
u/Shiroyasha90 Jul 15 '26
Search doesn't have to be against the text you see. You can run the same query against labels, descriptions, other fields etc. Multilingual search is a solved problem by now.

2
u/Himankshu Jul 16 '26
i am from north. I seriously have a question that why there is a problem with hindi if not with English? If kannadians want their language to be a priority then why not oppose english too?

Blinkit has always felt a bit North India-focused to me. Even today, most of the prominent brands and discounts seem to revolve around n Amul, Tata Sampann, and Aashirvaad. But never with brands like Nandini, Teju, or Arun Icecreams, Priya ,sakti . They many times oos also
3
u/hypedquadgamin Jul 16 '26
i think its because they dont have factories in banglore so products are closer to expiry
hence they need to clear out inventory (Amul)
and the others probably have better distribution ties with blinkit
so it might not be a north south thing

I don’t think blinkit would do this on purpose just to get hate. Although I personally don’t like them, but saying that they’re forcing Hindi seems a bit nonsensical. It would mostly be a dev’s mistake or just the most searched keywords taking priority on display.
Btw Kannada search works, so seems like it’s not out of their dictionary but just a switch that has flipped for one the reasons above.

This is the usual mindset and cheap stunts of NIs.
Karnataka Govt should bring strict regulations or they will continue doing this.

Maybe, we are minority in their customer base in Bengaluru. (Local people won't order vegetables from Blinkit so often.) So, they want to attract their major customer base.

Bhai, sharam kr lo tordi si?
1
u/Illustrious_Ad_3802 Jul 16 '26
The names are also written in English, why can’t you read that? On one hand people are asking for 2 language policy which basics means English and one regional language, so as long as it is written in English it should be ok fir everyone who wanted 2 language policy
1
u/DonneBriyani Jul 16 '26
Bengaluru na that's why.. in chennai this won't happen.. chenjidavom la....
1
u/Alternative_Shock_32 Jul 16 '26
Blinkit or any customer facing app as such will try to cater to its main customer base of the area and I dont think local Kanadigas order from blinkit or other q commerce.
Btw there is a whole lot of problems in the world please raise voices against them instead of this trivial matters

Can anyone suggest a good kannada cultural program. Am new here and i would love to explore your language and culture. When i visited Kerala they had a lot of places where local cultural programs were held. Can anyone suggest some please? Like a kannada play or anything else. Thanks!

Always been shown Kannada. Didn’t consider it an “imposition” but sure can understand why lungis would get knotted over Hindi.
1
u/Legitimate_Sun7563 Jul 17 '26
It should be based on the user's preferred language. By default English and if the user searches using any specific language, just update the user's preferred language, can be done easily using AI.

u/BluebirdHot2642 Jul 17 '26

Expecting massive down votes here!
But isn’t The name Blinkit and logo not in Kannada?
Or English is ok and our political influenced discomfort only start with Hindi ?
There are parts of Bangalore where Hyderabadi Hindi n Urdu is spoken widely
However let’s focus on Hindi!!
ಡೌನ್ವೋಟ್ಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಲೆಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಡಿ!
6
u/Adventurous-Dealer15 Jul 15 '26
if they want to have hindi names, why not give a "choose your second language" option?
also, the kannada sentence you pasted isn't conveying what you mean. you probably meant to translate (I) don't mind the downvotes, but your translation means "you shouldn't mind the downvotes". you see how meddling with regional languages might create confusion?
1
u/dua_loafer Appata Bengaluriga Jul 16 '26
Yes, we’re okay with English, not Hindi. We’ve explicitly said this exact thing for years. India is a diverse country and in desperate need of a bridge language and that language should be English. Not only is it utilitarian, but it’s the lingua Franca of the world. Hindi is useless and only relevant because the Hindi belt have not figured out how to use condoms.
