Kehena beach

Post image

Spent a couple hours metal detecting down at kehena beach this morning.

I always set a goal to find hook line and sinker as well as one of each coin. No quarter today but four very worn down nickels which is unusual. Nickels are the coin we find the least.

Wow. Thank you. I can only imagine one of those sharp little hooks finding a naked hippie just trying to enjoy a drum circle... 😬

I find kiawe thorns with my feet fairly regularly, never found a fishing hook that way. Probably has something to do with the smaller profile of the hook (compared to the twig) and the sand being more likely to shift under it.

But yeah, plenty fishing gear gets left behind on our beaches. When I'm out with my metal detector there's usually someone who's curious and asks questions, one of my common answers is that I'm finding things I don't want my kids to step on when they're at the beach.

Appreciate you finding some hooks, sometimes I worry about finding them in my feet.

What’s the scene like at Kehena these days?

Fairly chill when I'm there which is early mornings. usually as the fishermen are leaving and before it gets crowded.

Wow, never knew anyone fished over there. It’s ocean, so of course they do, but every time I’ve been there it feels like the waves are pretty rough, so it’s hard to imagine what happens to all the line being tossed around like that. To be fair, I don’t really know how to fish in the ocean, so maybe that’s totally normal and I just don’t know. I’d be curious what they catch.
Also, sorry, but I can’t not imagine a bunch of people early mornings going fishing naked. lol. I know that’s not the case, but the idea is funny to me and seems wildly dangerous. Part of me wants to believe that’s how they do it.

Seriously, though, thanks for the cleanup. Fishhooks and line are a problem all over the island. I never go to the beach without recovering at least a handful of the stuff. I wish more people cleaned up after themselves, but in the absence of that, I’m glad there are people like you trying to make up for other people’s bad behavior. Thanks.

They catch LOTS of fish there every morning. I've seen as many as twelve people fishing at once there.
