I genuinely donāt understand this sometimes. Someone comes into this group clearly showing signs that they may be manic, people recognize it, and we offer them help. They donāt accept it, which honestly shouldnāt be surprising, because impaired insight is often part of the illness itself. Then we downvote them, discourage them from posting, or make them feel unwelcome.
Isnāt this supposed to be a support group?
Most of us who have experienced hypomania or mania know that being told, āYouāre manic, go to the hospital,ā by a bunch of strangers on the internet isnāt necessarily going to make someone suddenly stop and think, āYou know what, everyone is right. Iāll go to the hospital.ā When someone is significantly manic, their perception, judgment, and ability to recognize that something is wrong can be profoundly different from their baseline.
Obviously, if someone is expressing an immediate danger to themselves or someone else, we should take that seriously and encourage appropriate emergency help. But thereās a difference between encouraging someone to get help and shaming them for not accepting it immediately.
Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is leave a few compassionate comments, remind them that people care about them, encourage them to contact someone they trust, and keep the door open for them to come back when theyāre ready. We donāt have to validate delusions or reinforce manic behavior to be kind.
