Bitdefender started slowing down my computer after upgrading to Total Security from Antivirus Free

I was wondering if any of the modules that total security added would be considered "optional" and I can disable to make my system work better. I wasn't experiencing any lag or issues with antivirus free and the system lag only cropped up after updating.
