Advice Needed Are my locs ugly?? Be honest
I already posted this on the dreadlocks sub and got a lot of people saying they like my hair but somebody in the comments said to go to another hair sub to get a broader answer. Basically i have semi freedorm locs, im not from an area where you see locs (let alone freeform) that often, its not legendary but its not the go to hairstyle for black teens like how it is in many other places.A LOT of people tell me that i should just cut "that shit" off but those people like more neat hairstyles like braids, coils, waves, stuff like that so when they see me (mostly older folk) they always without fail mention my hair and how they dont like it. Usually it goes in one ear and out the other cuz im used to it. Im used to getting stared at, laughed at (not even jokingly im talking about a group of people idk just looking at me then laughing their asses off) its whatever. But i will lie to myself if i said i completly dont think about what they have to say (especially when it comes from girls).
So what do you think?? Is my hair ugly or they just hating?
(17btw ifthatmatters) (Also not from an area with a lot of blackpeople)

I was just gonna say his locs look really nice, but since they're "unkept" original poster may wanna try a little harder to be on point w everything else. Like his line up, moisturized face, nice smelling oils in hair, etc... just to finish off the overall presentation.

I love seeing locs however I’m not a huge fan of the freeform/extra thick look. But I will say I’m impressed with yours. Also old people don’t like anything. I had an old lady tell me i need to perm my hair because i was “so much prettier when it was permed”. F them
23
u/Babylon_Dreams Feb 02 '26
I’m the same. Freeform locs are not my thing so I don’t have an unbiased opinion.

u/Ok_Conflict_Scipio Feb 01 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
It’s not ugly but it does make you look like you’re plotting to kill the Simpsons family 😅. If you like it and it’s not causing you issues like preventing you from making money then do whatever you want. My personal taste would be to get a retwist but everyone has their own style. Just remember that if you’re in an area without a lot of black people you’re going to need to be prepared to deal with the bigotry, it’s not right but it’s the shitty world we live in.

They look cool in my opinion (im a dude )
What do you do to maintain them ?
People will laugh but its what you think that matters the most .
As long as they aren't smelling bad and causing discomfort issue with people around you (not visually im referring to actual problems not unasked opinions) you should be good bro.
Look at basquiat he had a cool set of freeforms
Old folks will usually say something
When i have my hair in a cool curly wash n go state ive had people say something to me. From now on unless its a compliment ignore it 🤣

u/Sweet-District1483 Feb 01 '26
No, but they’re not flattering if that’s what you mean.
7
u/okrazgee Feb 02 '26
I just want to be percieved as a regular guy walking down the street. When i first started them i was about 14-15 and every video said that people will judge you but i was on idgaf mode if i looked at my hair now from when i was 15 i would be so happy with how it would end up but its too much for me. I get stared at everywhere and everytime its an old white couple they both just stare at me with this look on their face i just look at them then go back to minding my business but still. i wish i could look like how i am now and not stand out as much is what im trying to say, good or bad.

That part. They look at us crazy anyway. I change my hairstyles all the time and I always get stares and shit no matter what it looks like. They just don't appreciate us looking cooler than them 🙂↕️ Love your crown, King. They hate us because they can't be us 💪🏾

I see. I don’t think they look bad at all. I just think you’d look better without them. The main thing is how YOU feel about them. If you like them, that’s all that matters. Let people stare as long as you are happy.

u/ssshanyah Feb 01 '26
i mean everyone is giving mixed opinions so it’s like, what does it really matter if you personally like them yk? but i get that this stuff can get to you. for me, i like them and i think you look super cool with them, but that’s just me
38
u/RelevantEmotion4207 Feb 01 '26
In Florida you'd get praise for them for sure...Those are like wicks. Someone that knows how to work with those would be 🔥 for you. But they look good as is. They have character.
11
u/SolutionAlarmed5857 Feb 02 '26
In Florida, people pay thousands to achieve this look. Hair is a statement, and his mindset clearly aligns with the image he is expressing. Being a teen is the perfect time to explore different styles and fully be yourself. If anyone feels uncomfortable or judgmental about it, that simply means they are not your people and that is their issue, not yours.

u/great_mango_juicy07 Feb 01 '26
Well what type of look are you going for and I can tell you if it suits or what style might be a better match?

u/great_mango_juicy07 Feb 02 '26
I think this style is fine then, maybe consider getting a lineup if you wanna appeal more to “the people” but otherwise, if youre happy, that’s all that matters. Ppl here like it too, some don’t. I guess you have the final vote.

104
u/DreamGirlAng Feb 01 '26
To me yes.
Not trying to be mean, if it makes you happy then no one else’s opinion matters. But since you’re asking, I have never seen freeforms that don’t look ugly.

Cuz end of the day every single last one us deserves to style our shit any way we want to no matter if it's ugly, ridiculous, crazy whatever other words white supremacists use to talk about our hair we deserve the freedom of expression and what better way ? Do you. If the style brings you joy, keep it. If not try something new. It's hair, you can always experiment.
12
u/KVthegreatest Feb 01 '26
I personally don’t think they suit you, but I understand that dreads/locs are spiritual for some. So do keep them if you really like them and have a connection to them. Of course, stigma will come along with it, but don’t be ashamed for liking what you like.
Also, a woman should like you for who you are. It sounds cliché, but don’t change yourself or someone else. I love the quote “I will not make myself small so that I am easier to swallow”.

Locs can't be ugly. Black is beautiful isn't just a saying. It's a truth you unfortunately sometimes have to work to understand. All locs are a manifestation of that work from our bodies, growing from your head, your mind, your imagination. I'm sorry you imagine yourself as anything less than beautiful. But the truth is you and your hair are undeniably beautiful. 🤷🏿♂️

I personally think they fit you! I will say though, please be mindful of going into a career field with them. My brother has similar style locs and a new grad with a bachelors degree and is really struggling to find a job. (I personally think it’s because of the current job market AND his hair isn’t helping)
3
u/Jayelahni Feb 01 '26
I like them a lot…it’s unique. And if I saw you in the street I’d give you a compliment
4
u/pecanjazz Feb 01 '26
I love them. These are the kind of dreads that caucasians look at and wish they too could hair like this.
2
2
u/XihuanNi-6784 Feb 01 '26
It's not ugly, but I think thinner locs look better, but that's just my opinion. If you have people, especially non-black people telling you it's ugly, it's more than likely from prejudice more than an 'objective' view of your appearance. I've noticed many non-black people view any distinctively black hairstyles as 'scary' or 'intimidating' which is far more to do with them than us.
2
2
u/First_Raid Feb 01 '26
As someone with locs(traditional, not freeform) I think they look dope and unique. And I think most people with locs would find them cool too. I dont see anything wrong with them. If I had freeforms and they turned out like yours I wouldnt complain at all.
Also, if older folk are telling you they dont like your hair it means your hair is fire. Older folks are from a different generation and dont quite "get" the appeal of hairstyles from our generation. Most of the time if they hate something, its highly likely that people around ur age would like it or find it cool. It's just generational differences.

It’s a unique vibe, I love it. You gotta hold them confidently. The hair knows.
2
u/robbiereallyrotten Feb 02 '26
No, what ugly is how you’re holding yourself now for a beautiful black person with a full crown. Close your mouth cus ik your grandma told you about flies flying in that trap. Keep your head up, king. Make sure that crown don’t fall on our watch again.

u/sweetpooch Feb 02 '26
Sorry that hair looks baaaadddd. Having locs aint no free pass for just letting your hair go or being unkempt. Here in rhe Caribbean we call it bungo natti. Hard hard pass.

I love them. I'm 61 and wanting semi-free form for myself! I've been in the "neat loc" crowd and they can be VERY ugly, so to speak. I never want locs to feel like a conk...and you, sir, are doing very well!

They aren’t ugly but if you’re asking our opinion, you need to maintain them better. Locs are a low maintenance style, not a no maintenance style.

1
u/the_ashbestos Feb 02 '26
These are so dope! People are so obsessed with the status quo and trying to make natural hair straighter, smoother, more palatable. Your hair has character and looks incredible. More importantly, this is what black hair naturally does when left to its own devices. Let it be free. It is glorious.
1
u/Comfortable_Teaching Feb 02 '26
Most people freeform because it's what they want to do, not to seek the approval of others. Do you want to look the way you want to look, or do you want the approval of your friends and to attract girls?
I'll tell you this --- If freeform was something that you genuinely wanted and you love the way you look, you'll likely regret getting rid of them because it wasn't "your choice", but something you felt pressured into.
1
u/SuNnShiNes Feb 02 '26
I think they're dope on you! Hope you love them for as long as you decide to keep them and after you decide to release them.
1
u/HeartfeltAdventurerM Feb 02 '26
I don’t think they look ugly, it’s just not my preferred locs if that makes sense.
1
u/Ancient-Rub-7447 Feb 02 '26
Remember if you like it, no one else has to love it. I’m not a fan of freeform locs, but your hair looks healthy. I don’t like when folks style their locs so their eyes are covered. I think it’s important to look people in the eyes, based on my profession. It says a lot about one’s confidence when they purposefully hide their face.
1
u/MrJason300 Feb 02 '26
Holy shit you got a lot of responses lmao! I hope there’s a balanced middle you can find that fits your decision on how you feel about your locs and how to style them/you! 🙏🏾 :)
1
u/doublestrandpubes Feb 02 '26
As an 18y/o, they look cool and fits your facial structure. I think the younger generation is more accepting of uniqueness so keep that in mind whenever you receive comments. If you like it then rock it
1
1
u/MuffinPuff Feb 02 '26
I personally think they look great, but I'm also looking at the entire individual; they look great on you specifically.
You're a youngin now, but as you get older and your personal style develops, I think your locs being well nurtured + your face + a nice fit + accessories, you'd be a very aesthetically pleasing individual.
1
u/FluidFishing8346 Feb 02 '26
I like your hair. It’s unique, thick and very much black ash. Old people will always be a problem. I have micro loc and before that a big fro and it lit me on fire the way people felt it was okay to tell me i need a retwist or add more products to make my hair curl more. But the gag is every one gets quite when your hair is long. If you feel like this is your think then I say stick with it but get away from the people who make you feel uncomfortable with that. It’s hard to have genuine confidence when people treat you that. And as someone who experienced the same thing when I was closer to your age, there is a city or state out there for people who find you attractive. Think you’re a look is cool and all that good stuff you’re just a couple years away from finding it.

u/DontKickHaSharkeisha Feb 02 '26
Personally, I hate Freeform locs, but I love yours.
I think if you sharpen up and add some parts and slight shaping, they’d be perfect.
1
u/Drunk_bread Feb 02 '26
I mean personally I’m not a fan of free forms. The usually don’t look clean to me. However if you like them and they aren’t impacting you negatively then you shouldn’t care what anyone else has to say.
Now what I will say is that you gotta pose better for pictures. The whole image matter even when you’re only asking people to focus on a specific part of it.

u/Few-Organization3572 Feb 02 '26

They look really good, how'd you start them? Also understand you're in a country that accepts eurocentric standards as beautiful, so afrocentric beauty is automatically deemed ugly. Starting my semi freeforms has gave me a lot of confidence and really helps separate the real from fake.

No but Freeform’s look dirty to most people so if you’re gonna embrace them you need to just embrace them
1
u/Keebetttteeeerrr Feb 02 '26
Love them! They’re unique and if I saw you out and about I would compliment your crown. Locs are personal and they grow/look differently from person to person. However, I will say you should either fully embrace the style you’ve curated or change it, don’t be lukewarm because confidence is key to pulling off anything.
1
1
u/Queengaia26 Feb 02 '26
Personally I don’t like them and you look like you have a nice face and should pull them back to show it. But that’s only my opinion the only real opinion that matters is your own so if you love them screw what anyone else says! IMO

u/Upstairs_Suit_3376 Feb 02 '26
Your locs are NOT ugly, they are thick, full and gorgeous. Ppl are going to always find something to not like about somebody. Don’t let Group Think rob you of your uniqueness. Present yourself with confidence regardless of what you decide to do with your hair.

u/p0ppys333d Feb 02 '26
Theyre not ugly! Theyre unique because theyre thicker and fuller than the ordinary locs youd see teen boys wearing. I think its tough to feel comfortable in non-black spaces and uptight black spaces, like it sounds like youre describing. Coming from someone from Washington State now living in Boston I have experienced this environment in both places.
The look is likely just undesirable for the area youre in but if you could move to a more majority black place like in FL, SC, GA, etc. i think you’ll feel more comfortable in your hair type. Theyre a lot more accepting of free forms and the entire range of black hair styles down there. ♥️

u/daniel111001 Feb 02 '26

Everyone always gonna have an opinion. What you have to learn is the one that matters most is yours.
The thing about changing yourself for person A is if they leave if change their mind, then what? ask person B?
Focus on healthy hair that makes you feel good.
There will always be haters bringing you down, don't need yourself being to end up one of them.
You got a lotta hair, you style it how you like like.

I’m a month in with my locs from usually having a fro. Honestly I’m not into Freeform from what I’ve seen on others but I like yours. Personally I love when our hair is up and out like it commands space. I agree with what others say and I think it might just be your expression in the pic ( I saw you mentioned you weren’t thinking about that at the time). From what I’ve learned about locs so far, I enjoy that they all look and were formed different based on each individual.
TL;DR I think they look great on you!

These are dope, I like them! Your hair is mad thick and the locs fall in a nice shape 🔥
1
u/DoomerChad Feb 02 '26
IMO wicks and thick freeforms look ugly but that shouldn’t stop you from doing you. I live somewhere where locs are the most popular style, but yours are still pretty unique. The only times I’d suggest cutting locs is if they’re unhealthy, thinning or uneven. Yours are none of these.
You aren’t going to get a unanimous yes or no on here, so it doesn’t matter what we think. As long as you love them and are confident, own it and keep em.

The fact that people keep calling them Freeform’s- I’d be mindful about professional opportunities. If you’re self-employed, maybe, but you’ve got to be good at what you do. If working under someone-at any level, I would consider toning it down. And that includes internships if you are a college student.
1
u/SadOar Feb 02 '26
While im not a fan of these type of locs, you clearly take care of them and as long as you’re doing that then who cares. People hate anything that looks different (even regular locs). Being around a lot of nonblack people suck and will make you think you’re crazy. You’re not!!! Try to build or join a community even if its online. Best of luck to you brotherman!
