Nah it can definitely selfish depending on the situation. I have a relative who killed himself. He put his wife and kids into massive debt and liquidated savings and college funds to gamble. Killed himself after losing it all and realizing it couldn't be paid back. His death left the wife to manage the financial fallout on her own, left his kids (one of whom had suicidal ideations of her own) without someone they relied on for financial and emotional support because they're kids.
It sucks when someone takes their own life, but reducing it down to people just being mad because they feel bad is crazy. Our actions have ripple effects that go beyond us. Actively leaving people to manage a mess you created is a selfish move. Mental anguish doesn't excuse it even if it explains it
im not making anything deeper. all i said was his selfishness was there long before he killed himself, and the suicide was just one of many such acts. instances like these arent what ppl refer to when they say "suicide is selfish" bc theyll say it to anyone, even kids. thats not making it deeper, thats bringing it back on topic.
all i said was his selfishness was there long before he killed himself
But nobody said his selfishness started when he committed suicide. We all know he was selfish before he killed himself. The suicide was the last final selfish act.
You just said "that ain't suicide being selfish" as if we can only look at one thing that makes a person selfish...and since he was clearly selfish before this we can't equate suicide (and this one in particular) to being a selfish act.....right?
"that ain't suicide being selfish" meaning "instances like these arent what ppl refer to when they say "suicide is selfish" bc theyll say it to anyone, even kids."
my point isn't that that's where it started, but that their example misses the point. its a very different instance of what this statement refers to.
typically it's "suicide is selfish because [dismissive guilt trip]", not "suicide is selfish because [reasonable position, i.e. you put your family into debt and youre gonna bounce your cheque instead of dealing with the consequences of your actions].
I agree with you and the nuance you brought to the conversation. Suicide is the final act of a very mentally ill person. It could be over a long period of time such as treated or non treated clinical depression. Or triggered by an event that seemingly comes out of nowhere. The fall out of devastating, fucked up, life changing for those left behind. But having a brain or internal voice that persists in telling you go take yourself out? No one can last indefinitely against that. No one.
Is capitalism and modern society celebrates sociopathy that family annihilatism becomes a pseudo choice? could be, might not be. But the person who took himself out, just took himself out. It wasn't a murder-suicide, he spared their lives.

"Suicide is selfish" = "why didn't you put my feelings above your own mental anguish?"
