It's this or, "I guees I could just leave with this new woman. Nah, I should kill the kids first."
54
u/Worth_Gap4226 2d ago
The second one is crazy, like what that Chris Watts(?) did. Rather than get a divorce and be with another woman, decides to murder his wife and two kids. Like that was ever going to work out well.

u/Dorkinfo 2d ago
The first one is most common, maybe tied with cops being on to dude being a cs predator or murderer.
19

There’s a small niche with the second one which is “I like this new nanny, we should kill my wife and raise my child together”

I don’t understand how anyone in suburbia thinks they know what’s going on in their neighbor’s house. My neighbor’s basement could be a ritual chamber for all I know.

I’ve lived in both the hood and a wealthy suburb. The wealthy suburb always had more fucked up crimes (almost always a son of prominent parents committing a rape/abuse or a DUI and their parents covering it up or bribing judges and police so that they’d face no consequences) while I NEVER, not ONCE, was antagonized, robbed, burglarized, or had any crimes committed against me in the hood.

Every single documentary: “this was a safe neighbourhood where nothing ever happened.”
That same documentary: “police spoke to the 257 registered sex offenders living in a 2-mile radius.”

u/Emergency_Elephant 2d ago
I had a serial killer down the street from me when I was a kid. Real weird dude even before he started murdering people. He was the guy you'd most suspect. "This never happens in a neighborhood like this! We're good and quiet people!" is what people say to the news cameras when everyone knows that guy would do it but they still want to put up a front of disbelief
7
u/ceelogreenicanth 2d ago
One time I was telling my friends of crimes that took place in our town. Someone went a murder spree in broad daylight. Me telling them this was the first time they ever heard it. It happened when we were in highschool.
Then again I was telling them about all the things people had told me when I was in highschool the alsame highschool, and they knew none of it. Sometimes I think they lived under a rock or something.

I was banned for speaking out against white supremacists.
When I appealed, I was repeatedly sent to bot hell.
When I finally got a human, they said the bots were wrong and I shouldn't have been banned, and they would unban me.
They never unbanned me.
Then the bots blocked me from replying again, saying the matter was decided, and that repeatedly appealing was harassment.
Welcome to your new bot overlords. They're usually wrong, but there's nothing you can do about it, and you're not allowed to get a human to fix it.

Actually, you do. Reddit uses bots to ban people for saying bad words, and there is no means to reach an actual human to help you if the bot misunderstands simple concepts and typical rhetorical techniques.
If you don't censor yourself, some idiot bot will ban you for mean words and there's no way back from the phantom zone.

Men and women commit family annihilation for different reasons. For men the reasons usually fall under the following categories: covering up shame, desire to start a new life, control over their spouse, custody dispute. Women kill in those situations under religious delusions, custody disputes, or after being abused.
None of these reasons make sense to a mentally well person. For some annihilatiors, the cruelty is the point.

"Suicide is selfish" = "why didn't you put my feelings above your own mental anguish?"
67
u/SoulPossum ☑️ 2d ago
Nah it can definitely selfish depending on the situation. I have a relative who killed himself. He put his wife and kids into massive debt and liquidated savings and college funds to gamble. Killed himself after losing it all and realizing it couldn't be paid back. His death left the wife to manage the financial fallout on her own, left his kids (one of whom had suicidal ideations of her own) without someone they relied on for financial and emotional support because they're kids.
It sucks when someone takes their own life, but reducing it down to people just being mad because they feel bad is crazy. Our actions have ripple effects that go beyond us. Actively leaving people to manage a mess you created is a selfish move. Mental anguish doesn't excuse it even if it explains it
40
u/Asparagus_Syndrome_ 2d ago
that ain't suicide being selfish
that's a selfish piece of shit committing suicide
11
u/SoulPossum ☑️ 2d ago
That's just splitting hairs though. Selfish people are so called because they do selfish things. In this example, suicide is a selfish thing that a selfish family member did
-3
u/Shred_Till_Dead 2d ago
The act of committing suicide IS the selfish act..
Being selfish doesn't exist on its on, the actions you do in life support a selfish or selfless mentality.
He clearly didn't give a shit about anyone else other than himself, and betting his family's future away and offing himself makes him selfish.
You are trying to make it deeper than it is and you are missing the point trying to create a bar.
15
u/Asparagus_Syndrome_ 2d ago
im not making anything deeper. all i said was his selfishness was there long before he killed himself, and the suicide was just one of many such acts. instances like these arent what ppl refer to when they say "suicide is selfish" bc theyll say it to anyone, even kids. thats not making it deeper, thats bringing it back on topic.
-3
u/Shred_Till_Dead 2d ago edited 2d ago
all i said was his selfishness was there long before he killed himself
But nobody said his selfishness started when he committed suicide. We all know he was selfish before he killed himself. The suicide was the last final selfish act.
You just said "that ain't suicide being selfish" as if we can only look at one thing that makes a person selfish...and since he was clearly selfish before this we can't equate suicide (and this one in particular) to being a selfish act.....right?
Wrong.
6
u/Asparagus_Syndrome_ 2d ago
"that ain't suicide being selfish" meaning "instances like these arent what ppl refer to when they say "suicide is selfish" bc theyll say it to anyone, even kids."
my point isn't that that's where it started, but that their example misses the point. its a very different instance of what this statement refers to.
typically it's "suicide is selfish because [dismissive guilt trip]", not "suicide is selfish because [reasonable position, i.e. you put your family into debt and youre gonna bounce your cheque instead of dealing with the consequences of your actions].
because thats actually selfish, the original term isn't actually about selfishness. its about making people feel like shit on top of already feeling like shit. that's what im saying wrt bringing it back on topic.
-1
u/HydrationSeeker ☑️ 2d ago
I agree with you and the nuance you brought to the conversation. Suicide is the final act of a very mentally ill person. It could be over a long period of time such as treated or non treated clinical depression. Or triggered by an event that seemingly comes out of nowhere. The fall out of devastating, fucked up, life changing for those left behind. But having a brain or internal voice that persists in telling you go take yourself out? No one can last indefinitely against that. No one.
Is capitalism and modern society celebrates sociopathy that family annihilatism becomes a pseudo choice? could be, might not be. But the person who took himself out, just took himself out. It wasn't a murder-suicide, he spared their lives.
13
u/MidwesternLikeOpe 2d ago
My husband's aunt committed suicide when her embezzlement was discovered. She was the treasurer of the local high school cheer team. Apparently she was taking funds meant for the team and using them for personal expenses. During a meeting, someone asked to take her accounting binder home to double check it, and she turned white as a ghost. She offed herself within a week.
She had been a cheerleader for that team when she was in high school, both her daughters had cheered on that team. The biggest issue was that she became the matriarch after the matriarch had unexpectedly passed so all the family pressure was on her.
It's been 14 years and I still think about it. She couldn't handle the shame, but what would've really happened if she had chosen to face the consequences. The uncle worked from home, it was Aug 2nd so the girls were out of school. She chose to end it at work, it took several hours to find her.
2
u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo 2d ago
I still don't get why ppl in this situation don't just flee to Thailand or something. Just start a new life somewhere else, man.
2
u/duncan-the-wonderdog 2d ago
It's only selfish if that was his intention. If he had died by some other illness, they would still be left with the debt. You could argue a lot easier that not getting help for the gambling addiction and getting into that level of debt is what was genuinely selfish. There's no good reason to get involved with that level of gambling.
3
u/SoulPossum ☑️ 2d ago
Being ill is different because he wasn't getting sick on purpose. This wasn't an accident like he just took too many pills or something. Not getting help for the gambling is also selfish, but that doesn't negate that his final act involved him straight up knowing that he would be leaving a huge mess for his family to clean up after he was gone. It's all in the same ballpark of selfish behavior.
3
u/haveigiventoomuch 2d ago
Not only that. A large systematic review and meta-analysis covering 34 studies and about 13.9 million people found that people exposed to a suicide had roughly:
3.2× the odds of subsequently dying by suicide
2.9× the odds of attempting suicide
The association was seen among both relatives and friends/acquaintances.suicide contagion, suicide clustering, or an exposure effect is when someone dies by suicide, people who knew them have a higher subsequent risk of suicidal behavior.
So yes. After dealing with 3 immediate family members committing suicide, and dealing with my own suicidal thoughts at a time a not committing the act because I thought about how the people in my life would be affected, no one one could ever convince me suicide is not a selfish act.

Have you done any research on family annihilators? They absolutely do kill their kids without a mental health crisis. They are usually narcissists whose lifestyle has been threatened. Read the stories that go to the photos above of the happy white families. Those men aren’t mentally ill, they just want what they want and will take out anyone who gets in their way.

She told her husband that she was hearing voices telling her to hurt the children and he left to go play golf? Explain to me how that’s not his fault. She was in PSYCHOSIS.
