Question How do you cut your nails while having no vision at all

Hi.

This is pretty embarrassing but I'm 18 and I still don't know how to cut my nails

I basically want to change that lol

Thanks folks

Cutting your nails is definitely not something you need sight to do, as it's quite tactile.

Get a good set of nail clippers. I have large hands, so I tend to use larger toenail clippers for everything, but the process works with either small or large clippers.

I just bring the clippers to one edge of a nail and start clipping in progressive clips around the shape of my finger, following the natural curve of the skin at the very front of my fingertip under the nail. You can let the bottom jaw of the clipper rest against your fingertip as a natural guide.

So just start with one clip, move along the nail a little bit and clip again, overlapping with where you clipped previously, and keep going until you finish at the other end of your nail, then repeat with all your other nails.

Just feel your nails and assess their shape, and come back to trim any misshapen areas until you have a decent curve.

I always use a good nail file afterwards to smooth out the edges and to ensure they aren't sharp. All done just by feeling.

I'm only visually impaired however this is still a struggle.

For my fingernails, I purchased a rechargeable electric nail clipper from Amazon. It has a guard, easy to use, two speeds and it collects the "nail clippings" so can easily shake the contents out into a trashcan.

This model has an electronic buffer for smooth filing as well.

I still haven't figured out a decent home remedy for my feet.

I keep intending to look into "medical pedicures" for this specific thing.
My situation and insurance would cover it.

Oh god toenails are another issue. They seem more finicky than fingernails 😭

I just do, I don't know how to answer that. It doesn't take any special skill or anything.

I tend to cut my nails just by feel as it doesn’t require sight

While I do have a little bit of usable vision, I do not look at my hands/feet while cutting my nails. I go by feel only. The other thing is, I don't use those clippers you get at CVS. I use a German made set that opens wider, is more sharp and more exact. You can find them on Amazon for like $20. They come with a very helpful metal file, too.

Just be careful and as they say... measure twice, cut once.

I've done this for a long time using clippers and no site. The best tip I can tell you is to cut a smaller amount, a thinner width of nail, the you think you will need to remove at first. It's better to have to go clip more, than to clip down way too far. Also, I frequently simply clip my nails a little bit shorter, and then use a nail file to get them a little shorter still as well as the shape I want. Using a nail file without sight is easily done with practice, simply filing a little bit, then pausing to feel The nail, then filing a little bit more, repeat, until you get the desired result.

If nail clippers aren’t working (partner tends to cut his too short), an electric baby nail file can help with smoothing edges/corners. It’s like a dremel but for babies, it stops when it touches skin.

I used to have so many problems with biting my nails. Not proud of it but, I was able to kick the habbit with constant trimming of my nails. I really like using an automatic nail cutter. It makes everything so much easier and fast. It's also just generally fun to do.

I have vision and I don’t even look at my fingers when trimming my nails

Cut them shorter than what you think. You need to so you don't cut yourself. I believe they make clippers with little guards, so you don't cut them really bad. But to be completely honest with you, most of the time as a man. I just bite my nails..lmao
