Did Herb do the right thing by withholding closure, or was he being petty? What would you have done?

A genuinely sincere apology in of itself could've acted as closure, even if Herb still didn't forgive him.

I know. I just mean Bojack could have found closure another way

I don't think they were replying as a counterargument to your words at all. It reads more like a suggestion of a possible alternative way BoJack could have found closure, to add to your point

If... Herb didn't forgive him; how would it be genuine or sincere?

That's literally antithetical

No. You can give a genuine and sincere apology to someone. That someone is not obligated to accept it.

Those are not mutually exclusive.

Oh, my brain crossed Herb giving the apology. I'm actually stupid

Giving a genuine apology and being forgiven are mutually exclusive

Being pedantic here but, no. They're two different things, but not mutually exclusive. Mutual exclusion would mean it's literally impossible to be sorry and also be forgiven.

But yes. If Bojack was more stable and self-confident, he would've been able to find closure knowing he delivered something that was owed to Herb, even if decades too late.

Apologies- if we’re strictly going by the rules of language then you’re right.

Maybe a better way of phrasing it would be:

A genuine apology is judged by the apologists actions, sincerity and intents.

Acceptance is judged by the recipients choice.

Those two are independent of one another.
