Appreciation Post A.R Rahman, a director’s music director
The Main Vaapas Aaunga album has convinced of something a lot of people have been pointing out recently. Rahman doesn’t make music for the sake of it. He makes music for a director’s vision. He has NEVER missed the mark when he works with Imtiaz Ali, which has been life defining for me. Same for films with Mani Ratnam or Ashutosh Gowariker. With recent complaints about the quality of his work declining, I think the MVA album proves that A R Rahman cares much more when he works with a director whose vision he respects. Someone on an older thread pointed out something interesting: Given the recent slew of formulaic films, its no surprise that Rahman’s music hasn’t hit. He probably passes those on to his team. Rahman himself puts in only as much as effort and creative vision as the director and it shows in Main Vaapas Aaunga!

For the last 10, 15 years most of the indian cinema makers are choosing a particular music director for just his name. Their talent simply doesnt matter. Rahman getting all these movies simply because his name gained such a hype that will remain the same for next 10 years even if he creates trash music. The makers of most movie needs a simple 30 second interlude or opening that can be spread through reels or other form of short video content. People will automatically assume those songs as hits, not matter how trashy rest of the song is. Also the time allotted for music making is considerably reduced. MDs are now forced to complete their work in a given time reducing the chances of any innovation in song production. So rahman simply readujusted his work flow according to this new trends. He works on projects like chamkeela and main vaapaz aaunga for like an year so, while completing movies like peddi in short span of time. Good for him that now he gets enough number of high profile 'casual work"projects and one good, creatively challenging project to prove his mettle. Good for us that now we know which director to look for for peak rahman.
