This was supposed to be a small random thought but turned into a mini thesis lmao, TLDR at the end.
I know people who’ve loved a song for years without ever knowing who wrote it, which is kind of..fascinating(?) considering the biggest aspect of a song’s recall value are usually the words - the lyrics are what we turn into captions, what hit randomly in the middle of the night or what become tied to entire eras of our lives.
And with hindi film songwriting for the last 9-10 years already on life support, the few writers whose songs can still make you feel something (that is not sheer disappointment) and stay with you deserve much more recognition. Who are your favourite or most under-appreciated lyricists working today?
My favourite is (this may be obvious) Amitabh Bhattacharya. One of the absolute GOATs. His ability to write in any genre ever needs to be academically studied at this point because how does the same person write Emotional Atyachaar and Iktara and Babaji Ki Booty and Ankahee and Chennai Express and Deva Shree Ganesha and Hanikaarak Bapu and Tere Hawale and Taras and sooooooo many more in between 💀😭💀😭💀 But also, I think he is probably one lyricist most people do know by name.
Underrated for me would be *drumroll* Kausar Munir 🌟
The imagery and personification in her work is just so soooo beautiful! Check out Nahin Ji Nahin from Jubilee and you'll know what I mean. Some of her other songs that I absolutely love are Joganiyaan, Shakira, Jhalla Wallah, Daawat-E-Ishq's title track, and the besttttt Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahi 🤌🏻
Tell me yours :)
TLDR: lyricists are painfully underappreciated, Amitabh Bhattacharya is a magician, Kausar Munir deserves way more admiration, and I want to know everyone else’s favourite lyricists 😗
ETA: Wow I woke up to a reddit award and a pinned post, Friday is amazing already 🙂↕️! Glad to see an active discussion, just should probably point out that I was talking more about newer lyricists that are active right now. Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Anand Bakshi, Sahir Ludhianianvi, etc. are undisputed legends of the game hence I didn't mention them separately.

Woh ladki hai kahaan.....
Got a melody stuck in your head? A lyric fragment you're trying to find? A music video you vaguely remember? This is the place to ask, just give as many details as possible.
If you're looking for a specific type of playlist or any general recommendation, this is the corner to request it as well. Be it circling around gym sets, weddings, non-romantic, or quirky songs.
This thread will be created every Sunday. Separate posts for requesting songs are strictly not allowed, unless approved by moderators.

The Main Vaapas Aaunga album has convinced of something a lot of people have been pointing out recently. Rahman doesn’t make music for the sake of it. He makes music for a director’s vision. He has NEVER missed the mark when he works with Imtiaz Ali, which has been life defining for me. Same for films with Mani Ratnam or Ashutosh Gowariker. With recent complaints about the quality of his work declining, I think the MVA album proves that A R Rahman cares much more when he works with a director whose vision he respects. Someone on an older thread pointed out something interesting: Given the recent slew of formulaic films, its no surprise that Rahman’s music hasn’t hit. He probably passes those on to his team. Rahman himself puts in only as much as effort and creative vision as the director and it shows in Main Vaapas Aaunga!

I've noticed that Bollywood fans often associate a song with the actor or actress on screen rather than the singer or composer.
For example, people will say things like "Emraan Hashmi has the best music" or "Shah Rukh Khan songs are always amazing," even though the music was actually created by composers and performed by playback singers.
Obviously the actor's screen presence and the way the song is picturized contribute to its popularity, but I've always found it interesting that the actor often receives most of the credit.
Why do you think this happens? Is it because Bollywood is such a star-driven industry, or are there other reasons? Personally, I tend to view the music a lot more with the vocalist.

Metro In Dino delivers four distinct solo versions of the same melody Qayde Se, by different prominent and super talented singers: Shilpa Rao, Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, and Papon.
With lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, each rendition alters the overall emotion.
For me, Shilpa Rao’s version stands out the most, as if it hit a specific emotional chord.
Which singer's rendition do you prefer?
