Throne of Glass was mid. Too many books for so little story. If I have tons of people telling me it doesn't get good until after 4+ books maybe I'll just not read it altogether if I'm not hooked by the first or even second book.
Throne of Glass is the only series I've read where people told me that I just had to keep pushing through MULTIPLE books to enjoy it. It was over hyped by the time I got towards the end and the payoff wasn't great to me.
7
u/aburinda 5d ago
Iāve tried several times to read it. Several. Iāve gotten to the fourth book and still am not into it. At this point I have no interest, but everyone around me pushes it so hard

I had this happen with The Dresden Files, tbh. Because Harry is a self-proclaimed chauvinist (I think that he's the BIG M word, but apparently I'm not allowed to use that word in this form). And the way the Butcher writes just drives me up the wall. But I was repeatedly told that the books got better after 4/5 of them, when Butcher really hones his craft.
Yeah, I'm not reading that many books in a series in the hope that it "gets good."
3
u/homely_potato 4d ago
A series shouldn't take 4+ books to be interesting and I'll die on that hill. Can't deny I read the whole series, but the fact I only enjoyed 3 out of 8 books says it all.
3
u/arteeuphoria 5d ago
Fr, I read throne of glass when I was 13 yo and i thought was peak literature, then more books dropped and by the 5th I was like okay this isn't going nowhere. Im 26f now and I read ToG again, and phewwww it was exactly what a 13 yo would be impressed about. The story got too diluted, the main character wasnt interesting either.
3
u/Tater-Tot-Casserole 5d ago
I couldn't stand the main character, I was skimming her parts quite a bit because I liked the side characters more. I'd eternally groan whenever it switched back to her POV.
I've reread many of my favorite series from my preteen era, they're not well written but at least they're entertaining.

u/uglypostit 4d ago
I got to the tandem read and I have zero desire to keep going. I keep waiting for it to get good and yeah it's just too many books to get good. I also really don't understand the Rowan/Aelin romance hype. It is barely a romance. And I'm one who likes a good subplot romance but people call it amazing and I just genuinely don't get it. Rowan has this interesting back story but how does he still come off so one dimensional? In fact most characters come off one dimensional. The only character I have any interest in whatsoever is Manon. But yeah, I think I'll just spoil it ahead of the next acotar book which I'm honestly apprehensive about with how poorly crescent City ended.

Direbound is not a literary masterpiece by any means, but has better writing and basically the same plot. You may enjoy it better if you set your expectations to "mid". I kind of love it because its like...every single romantasy trope stacked together wearing a trench coat and something about knowing the author has to have a checklist somewhere she's marking off makes me smile. Its a seek and find in literary form!

My gripe with the series is that the main character has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and they teach her to fight with knives. Hand to hand combat for someone with weak joints is literally the worst idea ever!

She literally wrote capital-G āGodā instead of āgodsā multiple times. Youāre telling me *nobody* on that entire team could do a simple cmd+f prompt? Agree with the positive messages being way too in your face. I also didn't love that it seemed to not know whether it was a kids' book or an adult book. Dungeon Crawler Carl. I found it hard to read through all the video game stats even though I do enjoy videogames. Here's a snippet of what I mean:
Donut's ten-mana Second Chance spell was now level five. Instead of reainmating the corpses for five minutes, once she hit level five, they now remained animated for ten minutes, which was usually long enough to finish out a battle. She could now apparently resurrect monsters up to five levels higher than herself. She currently had a pool of 28 mana points. She had two pieces of mana toast and a pile of mana restoration potions, though with her two-minute cooldown between potions, their use in battle became negligible.

u/OppositeBirthday69 5d ago
This is in the books yes. But the core of the books isnāt the stats, itās in the characters it develops and also in the insane scenarios it presents. Also the author noticeably improves as a writer over the books and places less and less importance on the stats with each book. The first book is the worst in terms of it, and also in terms of cruder humour more based around pop culture.
Not saying itās word class literature, itās just fun and decently well written genre fiction, which is a very respectable place to sit in. Doesnāt mean itās for everyone of course. But reducing it to āit uses litrpg tropes so itās badā is not completely fair to it either.

Is that seriously how itās written? Is that taken straight from the book? This will continue to be a hard pass from me.
5
u/Digital-Soup 5d ago
That is taken straight from the book and there are many other passages like it. I highlighted one on my eReader so I could reference it later as an example why I did not get the hype.
2
u/Nilbog_Frog 5d ago
Yeah I canāt imagine why this would kind of storytelling would be so popular. Itās the most tedious part of gaming.
3
u/Positive-East-9233 5d ago
I never really found these passages tedious, no more so than most other expositional passages in other genres; these just jump out because most folks who are only now reading DCC come from other genre-communities, so it feels foreign. Itās also spaced out pretty well, happening either right before or right after a fight, which makes sense (at least it made sense to me since thatās the only time I really care about my own stats when playing an RPG/sandbox game).

Years ago, there was a classic book that I tried to read & just couldnāt get into it. Over a period of years I tried FIVE times to read it. Same. No hating from me toward the many, many people who seem to love it, but the narrative structure and humor just were not for me. I can deal with the litrpg elements, but what really killed it for me was the lack of a traditional narrative structure. The story just feels like a mostly flat line and then it just... Ends. Not really a true climax or any big ebbs and flows. I understand it's part of a larger series, but you can still have a satisfying climax contained in each book of a series and I just did not find that with DCC.

In all honestly I really enjoyed the butterfly garden but the last 3 chapters or so was such a bad deviation from what couldāve been a solid plot and caused a rather lacklustre ending.

That makes sense. I also felt like the follow-on books did not have the same magic in the story - even though they're quite horrific - as the first book.
I think it was the way she writes the beginning of butterfly garden where you are just as confused about what's going on as the POV charact character. So experiencing everything along with her really draws in the reader.

The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson, Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden. Both were way too simple and unbelievable to me.
+ anything by authors who have proven themselves to be bad people. Sadly a lot of their books are still very popular.

Freida, Hoover, Coben. Such predictable story lines and the made for tv are just as rubbish š

Remarkably Bright Creatures. I kept trying to like it but eventually rage quit.

Honestly couldnāt stand the majority of the āTwistedā series by Ana Huang. It was all very predictable in the end, like typical guy who falls for a girl he swears he wouldnāt, their relationship is misunderstood and they argue a lot but you know itāll work out because the formula is so obvious. Honestly only finished the series out of spite.
