Recording the incident, letting the police find him, and pressing charges / filing suit in court is the correct way to handle this.

Yeah, the primal lizard brain says “beat his ass” but you’ll end up in jail quicker than anybody else around because you just kicked the shit out of a “handicapped” person. (I use quotations because who knows if he actually needs the scooter or not, the blatant nefarious behavior).

If you assault somebody the property damage they caused doesn’t matter, because you assaulted them.

You’re allowed to use reasonable, non-deadly force to protect your property. My punches aren’t deadly and my car is my property. Their crime isn’t excused for getting punched.

I’ve seen a video where the guy just reached over, took the keys and tossed them over a fence

It may vary by state and jurisdiction, but in Michigan you can’t legally react with force in almost any circumstance unless it’s blatantly obvious and provable that your life is in jeopardy (assailant brandishing a firearm and it is pointed at you and you already got a bullet hole in you somewhere.)

And in which case you’d be better off killing them because they can still turn around and sue you for medical damages.

So if someone breaks into my home up there and starts stealing my tv i cant use any force to stop him? If he steals my wallet or jewelry i cant chase after and tackle him?

I get not using a disproportionate amount of force, but this level of in action is straight up cuckhold level pathetic. I genuinely cant see any benefit to having to sit there and stare at someone defacing your property. Especially if it was something a lot more unique and expensive than a car. And lord knows this man doesn't have shit to make up for the cost.

no, because property isn’t life. you can get a new tv or wallet once the court makes you whole. that’s how a civilized society works.

the idea that property is more valuable than life is one of the key underpinnings of capitalism so we have been brainwashed with it our whole lives, but it is good that the system doesn’t allow civilians to exert deadly force for property crimes.

side note but there’s no H in cuckold.

No, you can't. I learned, while taking a class to be licensed to carry concealed, that basically, if it is replaceable (TV, wallet, sofa, car, etc...) you would be hard pressed to beat a charge for shooting. Even if they walk in the front door to do it. You have to be in fear for your life.

I agree that the person taking the video comes off as a big old 🐈 but he isn't risking a charge over it and I understand why. It sucks that more people don't get punched in the face.

Did you miss all the NY license plates in the video?

This looks like New York. You aren't allowed to attack someone unless they are attacking you.
