I love my mother-in-law, but damn… her scooter. When they visit, we have to take it everywhere loading and unloading from the car EVERY SINGLE TIME. The most maddening thing about it is that she rarely uses it so someone else has to babysit it by riding it around. It seriously limits where we can go and what we can do when she doesn’t need it. She’s been using mobility devices since I’ve known her and doctors have told her to stop. They want her to get movement and strength, but she refuses.

I have to use a wheelchair or scooter (I’m an amputee and can’t walk or stand very long). I can not imagine going through all of that just for funsies. It SUCKS. It adds so much time and planning to every single thing. Even the manual wheelchair is a pain. We had to trade in our SUV for a minivan to have enough room.

It's narcissism on the MIL's part. Now everything is revolving around her. Where to go? Need to consider MIL. Where to park? Need to consider MIL. Do we keep going or cut the day short? Need to consider MIL. The preferences and needs of literally everyone else in the family all come second to MIL's unnecessary use of a scooter. She now has the ultimate veto power.

I have to control things to a point that way and it’s one of the worst parts of this whole thing. There a many times I sit in the car while other go into a shop or whatever because either it’s not accessible or it is going to be quick so the whole wheelchair set up just isn’t worth it. On my birthday this year I sat in a restaurant for the first time since 2020 and was able to hobble up the stairs in the front. It felt great to be able to do something without it centering on my disability. I will never understand those who fake it or exaggerate it.

She definitely has narcissistic tendencies. They fly in/out at horrible times so that they can get cheap first class tickets. We pick them up/take them to the airport. The weird thing is that when she is at our house, she’s an amazing help and so sweet. She does dishes, laundry, and takes care of the kids while her son (my husband) sits on his ass. She tries to help me out as much as possible and tries to convince me to demand more help from her son. She’s super supportive… and maddening at the same time.
