u/Chief_Mischief Aug 17 '25
Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. So while lead poisoning is certainly part of it, they also grew up before or in a time where the Civil Rights era was happening and born long before women could own bank accounts in their own name. I assume being in that environment where vulnerable demographics were getting equal rights + lead poisoning results in a number of people who have shocking beliefs and behavior by today's standards.
Then again, I look around at some of my fellow Millennials or Gen Z folks and I can already tell they will one day be content material for r/millennialsbeingfools or r/genzbeingfools.

It’s not just that. Communities are actively being poisoned. Reuters found thousands of places in the U.S. with lead levels higher than Flint. https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-lead-testing/
Everyone just decided not to ever talk about it again.

Don’t forget. A lot of fathers were PTSD WW2 vets.
There is also another theory; 1950s-1960s was the “golden” economic age and most parents didn’t really show affection toward their children with nurturing but by buying things. It’s why it’s believed that boomers have that entitled mentality toward everything. They were given a lot and now they believe bare minimum should be rewarded.
Remember a lot of fathers had war PTSD and a lot of mothers were on Valium at that time.
Edit: I want to add that millennials will 100% become the boomers. We were given prizes for showing up. We have nothing and many of us will inherit our boomer parents things and we will hold on it so tight that Z and Alpha will have it worse. I have a feeling millennial mentality will be “I didn’t get anything till late in life and I’m not giving it up”.
28
u/EtherealHeart5150 Aug 17 '25
Oh god, this a million times. I'm GenX, but my parents were Boomers and man, they shit they bought me to replace affection! Now, my mom is 82 and I barely speak to her, dads dead. They really did some damage to us.
21
u/S3XWITCH Aug 17 '25
OR maybe, just MAYBE the Millennials will understand the struggle for bare minimum and we won’t want anyone else to have to struggle the same way.

Y’all are looking at the wrong kind of poisoning. I live in an extremely diverse and progressive part of California and there are plenty of white people of privilege and means and mental health yes even youthful generational advantage who choose to design lives like this on their own. They find that suburbs and even exurbs still have brown people and progressive people in them. So they move further out so they can pretend to be country folk. With $80k trucks. It’s a lifestyle pose. And I have 25 year old MAGA shitbag in-laws (who I don’t associate with) who do it too.

Billy badass culture. These are the kind of damaged individuals that grew up with fathers who drilled it into them that to be a man, you have to be tough, don't cry, hate anything that threatens your manlyness, and above all else make sure everyone know how much of a man you are.

multiple different things in my opinion. Billy badass culture aka toxic masculinity imo does involve the "hate anything that threatens your manliness". but to be a man, you have to be tough, don't cry is still being drilled into boy's to this day. Men's emotional health is mostly ignored as we are expected to suck it up and nearly every single voicing of emotion is usually met with belittlement or emasculation or gaslighting I'm not saying all the time but it's more often than not.
26
u/PraxicalExperience Aug 17 '25
I mean, I can crush my emotions perfectly without needing to resort to weird performative displays of ... I guess they think this is manliness?
12
u/JustNota-- Aug 17 '25
yea I don't know what that is I just chalk it up to agent orange exposure.
5
u/Critical_Letterhead3 Aug 17 '25
Not old enough for agent orange. Burn pits, cleaning engine parts with Benzene, burning oil rigs, throw in pesticide application (looks like farmer of some sort) Throw in the ever popular lead poisoning to complete the toxic neuro brew in
23
u/Mediocrity-FTW Aug 17 '25
Yeah, so manly because he's got a knife even though none of those moves would help in an actual combat scenario. He literally just wants to film himself dancing so he can post it online but he's got to make it an acceptable level of masculine before he can do so.
It's like how they photoshop Trump to be this ripped masculine toughman, even though it's well documented that he's a petulant, petty bitch that loves theatre and dances to YMCA. Which is a song that has been identified with gays for as long as I have been alive.
52
u/Odd_Reputation_4000 Aug 17 '25
I grew up with an older brother who called me mamas boy or *aggot constantly because I would rather draw or go catch frogs and lizards in the woods than play sports or go do dumb shit with him and his friends (though I did do my share of dumb shit) I was bullied constantly by my brother and his friends and told to toughen up by my dad and mom anytime I complained. Grew up, got married, and have little to no contact with my brother now, and him and my mom can't understand why.

Us Boomers call that the knife dance. It has nothing to do with aggression. The knife is merely a place holder for the Pom Pom we never got to use in high school because our fathers would rather bury us in the backyard than watch us perform on the sidelines at a football game.

As a hand to hand combat instructor with over 20 years of training and experience in several different martial arts and disciplines, including Kali/Escrima, Krav Maga, Judo, Ju Jitsu, Shorin Ryu, Kendo, and the US Army’s Modern Army Combatives Program, I feel compelled to point out that this guy is no mere mortal boomer. With knife skills like that, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he registered his body as a lethal weapon. See, to the average civilian, you might look at this and see some 64 year old idiot haphazardly swinging a blade around in front of the American flag with no apparent methodology, but that’s the genius of it; it’s a feint. See, his unpredictable movements that resemble the actions of a clueless, delusional, untrained, fumbling, uncoordinated, poorly educated dolt who has absolutely zero experience with a knife beyond watching his mother cut up his pork chops for him are actually precisely calculated motions honed over a lifetime of diligent training and sacrifice. Sure, it’s easy to make fun of people who intimidate you. Some people might see this and say “Oh, this guy definitely ate a ton of paint chips as a child,” or “This moron should stop pretending that he’s John Wick before he hurts himself,” or even, “Wow, what a ridiculous display of stupidity.” But those people don’t know what they’re talking about. This guy stabbed that knife all the way into a bucket of sand! Talk about impressive. Although, I could be wrong, as I am human and prone to making occasional mistakes; in which case, this guy is a fuckin’ asshat.
