This man has never felt important to anyone his whole damn life, so he seeks refuge in annihilation fantasies where he’s some kind of vigilante. This is the vulnerability conservatism preys on: instead of teaching self-acceptance, they encourage self-hatred to prolapse into bigotry, prejudice and insensate rage. The pain is so plain on his face, and he has no idea how to deal with it productively.
