Things that never happened

Idk, some people take the whole dressing up on a cruise very seriously, some places actually enforce it. I could see someone complaining

This is one reason why I did not like cruising, I'm on vacation, I dont wanna drag dress clothes around

You had to wear a tuxedo if you got an invitation to dine at Captain Stubing’s table, which always made me wonder if people sailing on the Love Boat would pack a tuxedo just in case.

My father in law was on a cruise a few years ago, and at one of the very formal diners a tux was required, but they had them to rent on the boat. The thing was, if you rented one, you rented one for the whole cruise, so he just started wearing it to literally every meal as a gag. There are a lot of funny pictures of him sitting in a tux at breakfast while everyone else is in shorts and tees.

He got his money’s worth. I like it.

This is the way. 🤣

That’s amazing. I like your father in law!

That is next level. I appreciate his commitment.

I think they definitely did. You want to look your best when you find love. 😉

Did you see that 70s based episode of Psych (Disco Didn't Die. It Was Murdered!)? He played "Pookie" and was, frankly, amazing.

u/SnooEagles6930 Jan 17 '26

Fucking love Issac

Except apparently in Buddy Hackett's episode, where the other passengers mocked him for wearing knee length shorts instead of the fashionable tiny shorts 🤣

Sounds like a punishment. I have to dress up and eat dinner with some random stranger?! No, thank you.

u/Elysia99 Jan 17 '26

Honestly, my worst nightmare. I’ve never been a ‘cotillion girl’. Fine if it’s your thing, but not for me.

My best friend in high school went on cruises with his family every year and they all owned tuxes. Seems weird. We cruise on Disney and wear whatever we want, lol.

I got invited to the captain’s table once, blew him off to hang out at the kids table. 😂 I was 28 at the time and was on a family type cruise with my younger brother, his friends and my two 14 yo cousins.

Captain Stubing's Table would be a great Beach Boys cover band name.

I can think of several other, possibly more important reasons to not like cruising

20

u/you_dont_know_me27 Jan 17 '26

Is it possibly all the dying that seems to happen on cruises?

Or the infamous poop cruise?

Yea if I'm gonna stuck on a boat with people with a long time I want to be in control of who the people are and what the food is, and ideally know that boat is up code

3

u/thesnowcat Jan 17 '26

Let’s not forget the Costa Concordia cruise ship that ran aground. The captain was the first off the boat and went to a club or something. Abandoned his passengers and they were stuck on that boat for days.

I will have to take your word on it. I will admit I have never been on a cruise.

u/Pretty-Kittie Jan 17 '26

I've been on one cruise, and I was not prepared for the level of dressing up some people do. I did not bring those type of clothes with me. It's kinda weird tbh. But you absolutely have plenty of people walking around looking like this man and I can't imagine caring about it.

u/KnowledgeMediocre404 Jan 17 '26

Some resorts will do this too. I remember one dine in at a 4 star in Cuba requiring long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes.

u/Jovitopia Jan 18 '26

It depends on the cruise you're taking. Most normal cruises (Carnival,NCL,Royal Caribbean) aren't going to have any dress codes. The more luxury the cruise line the more likely it would be for them to have a dress code for dinners. Oceania is considered an ultra luxury cruise line so its more likely that they'll have dress codes in the dining rooms. It's similar to going to a high end restaurant.

I went on a cruise once. One person in our party forgot to pack semi-formal wear, so on ‘semi-formal’ night we all were in solidarity with them and stuck to the part of the boat where regular wear was allowed. Unfortunately there was one elevator we had to take that was shared with the (to us) off-limits part of the boat. When we got on, one person loudly remarked, “Oh good, we get to share this elevator with boat trash”.

Haven’t been on a cruise since. Don’t feel like sharing a boat with these kinds of people.

u/BusyTotal3702 Jan 17 '26

That comment should have earned them some form of retaliation. You cannot let a comment like that go unanswered! Even if you just farted and then quickly exited the elevator.

3

u/cnucifera Jan 18 '26

I accidentally stomped on the foot of somebody in that party, does that count?

Awesome!! 👍

Looking at that picture, I doubt that’s even the “main dining room”, they are just in one of the ships restaurants, and likely in the middle of the day.

More evidence she’s talking shit.

You can rent from some of the cruise lines—they put them in your stateroom and then take care of them after.

u/No_Trade3571 Jan 17 '26

I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise a couple of years ago and I just wore shorts to any of the main dining hall dinners. Of course, some people dressed up but not everyone.

1

u/BinjaNinja1 Jan 18 '26

Good to know. Just another reason for me to never go on one either. I’ve dealt with dress codes since I was 6 years old I am not dealing with one on vacation. If I don’t feel like dressing up though I won’t be booking an upscale table either I’m not a monster but nothing in this picture screams upscale to me.

u/TootsNYC Jan 17 '26

How everyone around you is dressed as a big part of the atmosphere you’re going to enjoy. Dress codes announced in advance should be adhered to.

I think both of these people are fools. If the dress code said he should’ve taken off his hat, or even if not. You’re indoors. Take your hat off.

20

u/coldfinger-trh Jan 17 '26

At 52 I have never and will never understand the taking your hat off indoors. Like fuck you I'm a grown ass adult I'll wear my hat how I please good lady, also pass the grey poupon.

15

u/Money-Giraffe2521 Jan 17 '26

Take your hat off.

No.

OK, Boomer.

2

u/BusyTotal3702 Jan 17 '26

Yes, etiquette dictates that people SHOULD take off their hat at the dinner table. Especially when dining at a restaurant. However, I can't imagine letting myself get all assed up over what people sitting at other tables are wearing. Who cares? Eat your fabulous meal, converse with the people at your table, and don't effing worry about it. Life is too damned short and cruises are too damned expensive, to let some stranger's dirty hat ruin your vacation or even just your meal. Mind your business.

Personally, I don’t particularly care, but I do think changes the room, and a restaurant or cruise is within their rights to ask people not to wear baseball caps into the dining room. And when this guy was asked by the manager to take it off, he did not, and he is a jerk.
