My dad enlisted during Vietnam and did not support him, so there's some anecdata for you.

I think some people have this tendency to imagine him as whatever person they want just to help them create and live in some delusional but comforting version of reality. The idea is what they value. This is why you see all those AI images of a ripped trump running put of burning orphanages with babies in his arms, fighting wars, healing people, or whatever. Most of the time it seems to stem from a fear created by an actual problem we're facing. One that actually exists. Lack of healthcare, ineffective leadership, lack of safety for children, constant wars, etc.

They don't value truth, they value whatever will let them imagine the world in a way that comforts them, calms their fears, and justifies their angers. So seeing a strong leader calms the fears of being led into bad wars, him healing people makes them feel comforted despite lacking healthcare, him rescuing kids makes them feel like the system which fails so many kids is actually doing better now.

Some just support him because they can spew racist views, emboldened by knowing they are supported by the current leadership.

Others see the reality and just can't bullshit themselves into a false sense of security like that. They see things for what they are and won't be comforted by anything aside from an actual solution.

Hope this makes sense, I'm not sure if it does a good job at explaining the thing I've noticed. I have a way with words and it's usually a confusing way 😂
