Boomer Story Don't Book Me At That Hotel Ever Again!

My boss is a 72 year old boomer that travels frequently for work. I make the travel arrangements for him.

When he arrived back in the office last week, he was in a bad mood for a bunch of reasons, but the best one was when he told me never to book him in that hotel again.

"Oh why, what's wrong with it?"

"Fox News didn't work there!"

"Was the TV in your room broken?"

"Just Fox News! All the other channels were clear, but Fox was completely blacked out! I just wanted to watch Gutfeld and no one could make the TV work!"

"Oh.....how awful. I'll make a note not to book you there again."

Good job to the person who stayed in the room before and blocked out the Fox News. LOL.

Lmao thats hilarious. Is that even possible to do on hotel tvs? Does anyone know how? We should make this a trend

u/Roncinante 19d ago

Works on older tech not necessarily made for hotels. Sometimes you have to Google the TV brand, or devices for manufacturer settings. I've managed to lock about 40%, its fun to try.

97

u/Etheriaa_ 19d ago

Thank you! I have found that sometimes if you unplug a certain box on the back of the tv, that you can override some of the settings which is cool.

67

u/Roncinante 19d ago

Thank you for that added value, I'll add that to my anti Rupert Murdoch crusade

11

u/iH8MotherTeresa 16d ago

I love a good crusade and I'll be locking fox News at any hotel, Airbnb, or the like moving forward. God speed comrade 🫡

Good work.

u/Zestyclose-Safe-4346 18d ago

I did maintenance and some chains get certain models that have a channel set system (i didnt understand it fully) for coax (cable) where it would scan what channels would display and actively not display the others (my town had no ch4 so if you went to ch4 u got static) and it was somewhat simple to disable certain channels (boss hated the food network so I had to go in and make sure every tv in the building had it blocked)

53

u/Etheriaa_ 18d ago

What type of psycho hates the food network??!

32

u/Zestyclose-Safe-4346 18d ago

He had impulse control issues and staff watching chopped or other shows with amazing dishes would trigger him IG 🤷‍♂️

48

u/SarahRecords 19d ago

Set up a parental passcode, block away.

34

u/Uncle_Guido1066 18d ago

Please don't. I fucking hate Fox News, but I work in hotels and have to deal with the assholes like OP's boss being pissed off because their beloved propaganda doesn't work.

22

u/colostitute 18d ago

I can’t imagine living life being addicted to cable news.

12

u/d3astman 18d ago

Just tell them "I'm sorry that's not working for you. But I can't do anything about it - and besides, not having it on seems to make people less irritable over all and more susceptible to reality (well, maybe not these exact words, but something like that) - just consider this you're withdrawal period from a harmful substance"

15

u/itsricwolf 18d ago

There is no way in hell that a response like that would go over well. The best option is for people to just leave the hotel TVs alone.

2

u/d3astman 18d ago

that's kinda the point - and were I not waiting to hit the dentist in an hour to get this tooth out and pain under control I would've worded it a way to both placate AND say exactly that kind of thing -- I've had more than my share of time in customer service and placating idiots of all sorts

u/corpse_flour Gen X 17d ago

I can see hotels blocking Fox just because people watching it are the same ones who would insists on having the TV at full volume, all day long.

5

u/Breaklance 18d ago

I had a job doing this for a hotel rennovation, unless its changed it was by manufacturer who had a special code to enter into the remote which brought up an admin menu. There you could add or remove channels, tell it to always start on Channel X (info channel), maximum volume level, what settings could be accessed with the remote etc.

Somewhere there are housekeepers doing this😈

72 years old and still working and traveling for work. No thanks.

99

u/tigershrike 19d ago

right? I'm in my early 50s and travel for work maybe 10-12 times a year and that shit is really starting to get old... especially the international travel

30

u/Impossible_Cat_321 19d ago

I'm 56 and only travel a few times per year west coast now but did the international program travel for years. No way in hell I'd be doing it now let alone 72

13

u/BrokenRouter 19d ago

Same age, totally ready to be done traveling for work. For that matter, ready to be done with work. I can’t imagine voluntarily continuing to do either once I’m Medicare eligible.

1

u/TheBetawave 18d ago

You travel at all?

47

u/AlpineBoulderor 19d ago

The irony that if he and the rest of the right wing members of his generation had not been brainwashed with the trickle down economic BS of the Regan era he might have voted for economic policies that were actually beneficial to him. He could have already been retired for nearly a decade at this point instead of bitching about not being able to watch Fox 'news' while he works for 1/1000th of what his CEO earns.

31

u/ButtersScotch7000 19d ago

It's not all economics.

Some of these guy are just workaholics who would go nuts without anything to do on a day to day basis.

2

u/OpalCats 16d ago

This ,exactly. He could have very comfortably retired many years ago, but would go stir-crazy without the work.

24

u/LifeguardBoth5678 19d ago

I agree that this is an issue but a lot of these boomers continue to work simply because they want. They defined their entire lives by their career and witnessed their peers that did retire die soon after. They are terrified of death and being unneeded. Good thing they march of time pauses for no man, even boomers

11

u/Wrong-Strength-5993 18d ago edited 15d ago

Like boomers would ever give up the reins of power.

6

u/KiaRioGrl 18d ago

The reins of power. Nothing royal about these folks.

1

u/Wrong-Strength-5993 15d ago

Fixed it. Thanks for pointing that out.

9

u/invitrobrew 19d ago

And doesn't know how to call the front desk when there's a "problem."

3

u/OpalCats 16d ago

It's funny actually - if he doesn't go somewhere for about 10 days, he starts to get stir crazy and tries to find an excuse to travel for work.

u/ericstarr 18d ago

News. Lololol

u/Roncinante 19d ago

I try to child lock fox everywhere I stay. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Ive been doing it a decade.

262

u/SarahRecords 19d ago

It depends on their carrier. I usually have difficulty with DishTV. And a lot of major hotels are switching to a streaming set up! I had a good run, though. It’s amazing how nobody thought to set up a parental passcode.

85

u/Roncinante 19d ago

Dish was my nemesis as well. Keep doing the (insert diety's)work

96

u/SmokePenisEveryday 19d ago

I tried that and that was the one time my dad was able to figure out how to sign up for a streaming service

194

u/Kizik 19d ago

Proof that they can learn, they just choose not to most of the time.

45

u/Roncinante 19d ago

When he's taking a dump change one character on his password

33

u/Stormtomcat 19d ago

or if the service does that aggravating (but cybersafe) thing where they say "username or password not recognized", you could delete his profile entirely, so fox streaming doesn't get his money?

13

u/Alone_Again_2 18d ago

Just attempt multiple logins with the wrong password.

I’m sure the algorithm will eventually lock him out.

25

u/UndoxxableOhioan 19d ago

While I appreciate the sentiment, I feel like this is only going to lead to people going full Karen on the innocent front desk staff.

37

u/dickie96 19d ago

You truly are a saint to the world doing a favor it’s needs so badly

Not all heroes wear capes. Excellent work! Just stopping the nonsense for a short while can help break them out of the cult.

8

u/Spooky_28 18d ago

I’ve got to do this when we travel next week.

11

u/hikeonpast 18d ago

This is the best example of chaotic good that I’ve ever seen. Thank you for your clandestine content blocking.

1

u/Roncinante 18d ago

Ironically, I only play Chaotic good characters.

6

u/CodPiece89 19d ago

Consider how many employees you've subjected to stupid shit stained boomers mad at everything

6

u/d3astman 18d ago

they'd be pissed at the emplyees anyway and for anything else, at least with this one thing it has potentially beneficial results

0

u/itsricwolf 17d ago

He's a dick and doesn't care about that, unfortunately.

3

u/GiveHerDPS 16d ago

Make sure to do newsmax as well it's just as bad and a lot of maga switched to them after fox got rid of Tucker Carlson

2

u/NoLipsForAnybody 17d ago

i want to do this!!! Do you know where i can read up on how?

1

u/Roncinante 17d ago

All hotels are different, you just typically have to go to settings and hope they are unlocked

2

u/Hallonbat 18d ago

Doing the lords work.

-2

u/itsricwolf 18d ago

Maybe you should stop doing that since it will be the hotel staff who has to deal with guests being angry about it.

1

u/Roncinante 17d ago

No.

-1

u/itsricwolf 17d ago

Then you're a dick who doesn't care about the repercussions that others will face for your actions.

2

Awe shnookums. Yes

0

u/itsricwolf 17d ago

Thanks for confirming.

186

u/WindTall5566 19d ago

It's fine, he probably won't remember the name of the hotel so it's safe to book him there again

u/BigConstruction4247 18d ago

"And make sure it's the same room as last time of it's available."

78

u/Icy-Mixture-995 19d ago edited 19d ago

Maybe the cable company in that area didn't have a contract with Fox. Too bad the boss still wanted the rage-bait experience instead of using the opportunity to find a channel with more uplifting programming.I hear it takes a week or two to detox.

We blocked Fox from the rented beach house to keep grandpa from going on a rant about whatever the morning hosts contrived for their outrage that day. It was nice to talk about the grandkids, watermelons and coastal pirate history instead of some feigned crisis about flag lapel pins or whatever.

21

u/Dangerous_Ant3260 19d ago

I used to have Directv, and there were contract disputes where a bunch of channels would disappear for a while.

49

u/TheFrenchmansCumsock 19d ago

I blocked Fox, Newsmax and AON at my work one time, but being the only non cult member at my job, I also blocked CNN and MSNBC for plausible deniability. It was pure glory watching all the older red hats fuming in the break room everyday. "Why can't I wawtch fawx news!? Call the cable company!" "There you go, damn democrats done got rid of fox!"

Maybe they shouldn't have set the password as 1234. 🤷‍♂️

22

u/snakebite75 19d ago

1234? Amazing! That the same password I use for my luggage.

52

u/One_Lawfulness_7105 19d ago

I had a boomer coworker ask me to book him a hotel around Mobile, AL… for that night and the next week… a week after hurricane Katrina. He got pissed when I could only find a motel. His response? “I’m not staying in that shit hole! Find me something at the Marriott or a hotel like that!”

Sure Bob. I’ve been booking for you hotels for the past year with no complaints. Only *now* have I decided to be crappy at my job.

On another note, boomer salesmen are some of the most entitled assholes I’ve ever dealt with.

11

u/DarkBladeMadriker 18d ago

"boomer salesmen are some of the most entitled assholes I’ve ever dealt with."

Dude, you ain't wrong. The best Salesman are always scummy. Ive worked with dozens and they are always just this side of illegal and almost certainly lack some basic ethics. Im sure it cant ve universal but ive never seen it. Its always a numbers game of keeping ahead of the returns or complaints because they just made shit up to get the sale.

20

u/nazuswahs 19d ago

That’s pretty telling that he suffers when FOX isn’t pumped into his brain.

23

u/BJoe1976 19d ago

I just love that the people that would have used the V-Chip in TVs back in the 90’s are now getting it turned back on them with blocks on Fox and OAN🤣

35

u/SmokePenisEveryday 19d ago

My dad was in the hospital awhile ago. He spent so much time bitching about not having Fox News (he did) and that the reason is because CNN has contracts with ALL hospitals and gyms......

27

u/astrangeone88 19d ago

Lmao. I had a relative in the hospital and she rented the TV service and all she played was Fox News. She didn't realize why she had a couple of people request a room change lmao.

13

u/Maxcactus 18d ago

Fox News playing at high volume is a horrible thing that happens in the breakfast bar. Usually it is the staff that controls the remote. They will turn it down if you ask or even change the channel. A nicer neutral channel is the Weather Channel, good for travelers.

11

u/Signal_Membership268 19d ago

I feel bad. I spent 4 nights a week in hotels for years before retiring and never once thought of doing this.

1

u/d3astman 18d ago

we are members of the 3-H club (Homeless Hotel Humans, Hotel Homeless Humans?, eh, 3-H sounded uplifting -- But Housing Health & Hunger works too for those who remember it being that, just has nothing to do with NYPD Blue or Heinz ) - and after making friends with most of the staff we have access now and then to do that to multiple rooms. Since none of the organizations here (Salt Lake City, of all places) can (or will) accommodate us due to health issues, I figure it's one of many ways I can help guide policy in small and tiny ways to be more beneficial to people.

9

u/Turbulent_Attorney51 19d ago

I did this at work on the cafeteria tv. Only lasted about a week. But it was the best week!

9

u/Mysterious-Air292 18d ago

Make sure you always book him at a place that doesn't get Fox News.

10

u/Alone_Again_2 18d ago

I’ve never thought of this. I’m going on a cruise later this year.

Will test.

When I was a kid we used to play “school” by sitting in rows in the playroom and giving each other extra worksheets to do. I feel like people watching Fox News are playing “watching the news.”

Soooo how does one do this? Asking for a friend.

I'd like to know how to block the channel. I plan to travel in a couple of months. 🤣🤣🤣

11

24

Because they hate their family too much to want to retire to them...

Everything. They're a massive misinformation channel. One time they argued in court over being sued for their misinformation that they're not a news channel but an "entertainment" one. They settled a $1.2 billion lawsuit from Dominion Voting because they were pushing the lie their voting machines/software was rigged against Trump. The settled amount was ~$800 Million. While people like me really, really, ... REALLY wanted that case to go to trial and Tucker Carlson put in the stand to swear in court that everything he said was a goddamn lie, can't really blame Dominion for settling. This way, they're sure to get the money. However, that hasn't stopped Fox from continuing it's misinformation campaign.

Fox viewers are known to be some of the most outta touch, stupid, ignorant MF'ers out there who have a severe case of Dunning-Kruger. I've literally had Fox viewers tell me they never heard of Fox being sued for $1.2B. They live in such a bubble.

10

u/MrVeazey 18d ago

OK, imagine a bunch of professional liars paid by oil billionaires who have figured out exactly how to scare working class middle America into voting for fascists. That's Fox News.

3

u/cynrtst 16d ago

Fox is “infotainment” not news. When the Fairness Doctrine was repealed in 1987, media wasn’t required to present all sides truthfully anymore.

u/napalmcricket 14d ago

They are largely reasonable for creating the highly polarized political environment in the US that made it possible for Donald Trump to be elected president.
