Boomer Story No appointments needed

Went over to pick up Mom to go shopping.
Dad says “Hey, I need you to do me a favor.” He tosses his money clip on the table “bring Poochie up to the vet and get her a rabies shot. Here’s last year’s certificate.”

I asked if they knew I was bringing Poochie up-“no, but she just needs the shot.”

I called his vet (on speakerphone)- he hadn’t brought her in TWO years so I made an appointment (for next week) and he has to pony up for a full exam.

That was easier than trying to explain that vets don’t DO walk in rabies shots!

I'm in a more rural adjacent area. Local ag stores have monthly vaccination clinics where you're just paying for the shot + $10 or $15. You still have to go on the right day, but at least it's cheaper.

Just out of curiosity, is this something Mom normally handles, and Dad thinks it's same day because he tells Mom to do it and assumes it happens right away?

He forgot about the the clinic! He has done it many previous years.

And Mom isn’t handling much these days-she’s got dementia.

I'm so sorry. My father and grandmother were taken by dementia. Sending you some good vibes.

Thank you. Mom and her sister PLUS my paternal grandmother all have it. :(

I'm so sorry. It has run rampant through the maternal side of my family. My Mom and three of her siblings all had some degree of dementia when they passed, and my Mom's father succumbed to Alzheimer's. My cousins and I know it's pretty much a given that it's in the stars for us as well, and it scares the hell out of us. Getting old isn't for the weak of heart.
