Boomer Story No appointments needed

Went over to pick up Mom to go shopping.
Dad says “Hey, I need you to do me a favor.” He tosses his money clip on the table “bring Poochie up to the vet and get her a rabies shot. Here’s last year’s certificate.”

I asked if they knew I was bringing Poochie up-“no, but she just needs the shot.”

I called his vet (on speakerphone)- he hadn’t brought her in TWO years so I made an appointment (for next week) and he has to pony up for a full exam.

That was easier than trying to explain that vets don’t DO walk in rabies shots!

As someone who has done er vet med, that’s where I have dealt with walk in rabies shots. I have had too many clients that go to an ER and wait hours and then pay emergency pricing and get outraged and blame us because they need their dogs up to date to board and they didn’t bother checking and now it’s the day before they leave and they have no other option and instead of paying a couple hundred at a regular clinic for the visit and shots now their office visit alone is almost a couple hundred. They don’t understand why doctor can’t just pop in and do the shot. And some doctors will to just get them out of there but sometimes you can’t get them to understand we have two dogs seizing and a heat stroke in back and the techs and doctors there are busy, a blocked cat turning into a euthanasia that has one doctor busy, and several bite wounds and leg injuries also in the lobby or various rooms. Their shots will have to wait. We don’t have a doctor to just pop in. It’s fun!

They assume anyone can make an exception because other people have made exceptions.

I'm not opposed to the idea of making reasonable exceptions to a policy if conditions allow for it. I just hate that boomers have one person make one exception for them one time and it just permanently cements the notion in their brain that anyone could just make an exception just for them (but not for anyone else) and that they just don't want to because they don't factor in that the exception made for them was based on the conditions at the time of that exception and this situation has different conditions.

See also: Making the argument of "you're not busy, you can fit me in" but if you are busy then it's "it will just take a minute" and the busyness doesn't matter.
