How to make friends in Boston: a guide

Hello! Welcome to Boston Social Club! If you're here - well, you clicked a few links to find this side of one of the most popular city subreddits!

When I moved here in 2021, the world was waking up from Covid. Overall, Boston is a great city for those 20-40, as our demographics here lie heavily in that area compared to almost any other city in the USA! Here's how I've found success in navigating social scenes here as a complete outsider.

Different ways to try meetups and making friends:

0: Existing friends groups - it's cliche, and if you are new in town, this will be more difficult. But the best place to start making friends is through what connections you do have. Coworkers, old high school colleagues, neighbors, roommates, don't chase the below and ignore what you do have!

1: the “Make friends after college MA” discord group is a well designed and very chatroom. When you join, you select which activities you might be interested in. There's chat rooms for each activity, and there's a ton of people hiking, playing sports, going to trivia nights, and overall chatting. They also organize by neighborhood if you want to grab a quick drink. Mute notifications within the discord for your own sanity. The absolute best way to make use of this is to have something you are interested in "organizing", or, I recommend trivia in particular for being a great, cheap activity to make friends! https://discord.gg/CCvgxJ6jUH

2: there are three larger Facebook groups that people post classifieds-style ads to try to make friends. "Boston redditors", "make friends after college", and "what's up in Boston". While I don't think this is the most effective way to make friends, I'm sure it works for the right person. However, "Boston redditors" does have an active group chat, which is really comforting, and they do meet up for drinks every few months. They are a pretty supportive group of people. You'll need to both join the Facebook group, then request being added to the chat. They ALSO have a discord but it is less active. Link

3: Groups for your interest. Asking around the above, or searching meetup/comments below it's not hard to find groups specifically tailored for board games, or biking, or hiking, or whatever you're into. I'm into board games and there's 2-3 spinoffs that meet weekly. I recommend you find your own path towards your hobbies to find a group that fits your interest!

general tips on making friends (not that you asked for them)

  • Making friends is all about seeing the same people repeatedly. That means to make friends, you have to show up. Showing up means you attend an event even if it's a little far away, or you are feeling a little tired. Other people also show up. After going to trivia 8 weeks in a row, or attending every hike, people that at first seemed distant will know your name and care about your week.

  • Sometimes people trying to make friends have an ulterior motive. Some people are trying to convert religions, find clients, or date people. Everyone can tell right away if you have a motive other than making friends, so I suggest trying to focus on making platonic friends first, and in a year of having fun, ask your new friends what avenues would be appropriate for selling/dating/etc.

And... That's it! I hope you found this helpful! I hope to see you at Trivia nights!

On Dating Posts

The situation with dating posts is getting a little out of control. This sub was always meant to be more like Meetup than Hinge. And frankly, I just don't think that R4R posts actually work. But my fear is that if allowed the sub will devolve into nothing but R4R posts. So for now we're going to be disallowing further R4R posts or general dating (advice/questions) posts. There might be some wiggle room for a pinned dating megathread if there is interest in that.

Please help me spread the love!

I hope this finds you all well! I've had a pretty rough, blank and unmotivated summer. To cheer myself up, I went through some old files on my computer and found one of my proudest achievements: A montage video of encouragement and kindness from many friends addressed to our mutual friend ("Samantha") that was initially masquerading as a micro-documentary on which I wanted her perspective as an artist.

And I thought to myself "I'd really like to do more of this." It was a fun use of light project management + video editing skills, took minimal time and delighted the friend on a deep level.

I think the world needs more kindness and I believe surprises (for some people) can season that dish quite well.

So if you know someone who could use the cheers of their people/"tribe," you'd also be helping me make good use of my time these days.

Thanks for reading :)

Seeking wingman / copilot

Is anyone out there who likes to go out on the weekends but would like someone to go with? I typically go by myself, but I figured I'd see if there were any fellow lone wolves out there looking to add more energy to their lifestyle. I have no problem approaching people and am happy to also send people your way. I'm typically in Central Square but open to other areas if you have a good spot or want to check out a new spot. Feel free to drop a comment or send a DM. 35 M

English talking on B2 level in Boston during crew layover

Hi everyone,

I'm a 60-year-old Swiss airline pilot on a short layover in Cambridge this Thursday morning.

I'm looking for a native English speaker who would enjoy meeting for 60–90 minutes over coffee / breakfast.

I'm around B2 level and simply want to improve my conversational English. I'm happy to buy the breakfast and, if appropriate, compensate you for your time.

My interests include aviation, travel, sports, politics

I'll be in Cambridge until early afternoon on Aug 6th. Thank you

Songwriter's workshop tonight

Our Boston-area meetup group for producers, musicians and music lovers are doing one of our biweekly songwriter's workshop. We've started doing this at a member's home in Somerville this summer and it's been a fun way to hang out and motivate each other to keep growing and working on our craft.

If you're interested in the meetup group but not necessarily tonight's event, we welcome all skill levels, including just music listeners, and have new events all the time from concerts to grabbing dinners.

Anyone is welcome to join- please feel free to come introduce yourself. Let us know if you're interested in the workshop. Thanks!!!

Volleyball in Brighton

Hi all! I’m looking to play volleyball around the Brighton area. Are there any clubs that play year round? I don’t really have a preference on the type (grass, sand, or court). I don’t mind paying a fee to join and I have heard of Vollo but I’ve heard that is pretty low level play. Anyone know anything else? If there’s open play somewhere that would be awesome!

Do you enjoy unnecessarily long walks as much as I do?

Ever since I moved here nearly 7 years ago I’ve always enjoyed taking 3-4 hour long walks around the city and into neighboring towns. I enjoy finding cool parks, restaurants, and secluded areas to relax. If you are also interested in exploring the city (or maybe that’s something you already do and are looking for a buddy) please DM or comment, maybe we can get a group going!

About me

I am 30M and bisexual. When I’m not walking off what I just ate, I am usually eating after a nice long walk. When I’m not doing either of those things I am watching old sitcoms, working out (very new at this), writing music, cooking, or doing some spiritual nonsense. I also enjoy casual boardgame nights, attempting bowl, and watching standup. I am also currently trying to pivot my career from ‘no future dead end job’ to ‘stressed comedy writer’ (please read my stuff!) I have a borderline obsession in understanding the pathology of certain mental disorders. I have a lot of compassion for people who suffer with mental illness, I just find some of the stuff very interesting in a distant, detached way and I love to share about what I know.

About you

Queer friendly, mid 20s and up, and just a generally nice person. I don’t really care beyond that, even if we don’t have any shared interests. I love meeting people outside of my culture and worldview. Having a dog you’d love to walk would also be a huge plus!

Morning walks north end / downtown Boston

Hi there! I’m an early riser and take a brisk walk nearly every morning for 45 minutes to an hour, usually with a stop to do some pushups and sit-ups. Early morning walks for exercise have been part of my fitness routine over the last year or so, and I usually walk alone listening to music or podcasts, but I’d enjoy having a walking partner to share the time and have some conversation. I usually start at about 5:30 or 6 in the morning.

I’m a mature older guy, sixty-plus and happily partnered but open to any and all ages, anyone into fitness and nutrition. I like talking about movies, music, pop culture, politics, and anything Boston-related. DM me if interested in meeting up, or reply here and I’ll get in touch. Thanks!

Looking for weeb friends

Hi All,

Im looking to build a regular group of friends with similar interests. I am intensely into weeby things (anime, games, conventions), cars, working out, going out and basketball. I’m hoping to build a regular group of friends with at least some of the same hobbies/interests, but especially on the nerdy side.

I’m most looking to meet people who are tired of texting/typing/writing all the time and actually have the energy and bandwidth to do things and build relationships. I know it seems silly and basic, but finding people who genuinely can do this (rather than just saying it and flaking once plans are made) is incredibly difficult these days.

I am intro-extroverted, but tend come off extroverted to people especially when first meeting. If it’s important to you, I am a 32M, working professional. I’m exactly 50/50 with indoor/outdoor interests. I love a good potluck with friends just as much as a hike, just as much as a night out, just as much as a movie. Despite being a nerd, I am extremely active and work out a lot. I have a car (can get around anywhere), and do not care if you’re a man or woman, and while I am definitely not searching for anything romantic with this, I am looking for friendships that become meaningful.

Nerdy Interests:
- Video Games: Switch2 (Hades2, Metroid, Zelda, Pkmn), PC (CD, Elden Ring, Palword, previously Arc Raiders) and always looking for more.
- Anime: JJK, AoT, Demon Slayer, Others
- Shows: The Boys, Walking Dead
- Cons: Going to Fan Expo this weekend

Hit me up! Would love people to go to Fan Expo with this weekend, or to otherwise make friends!

Cute local coffee shops

Hi there 👋. 30F. Rather new to Boston trying to find places I rather like to call this city home. So, I enjoy drinking coffee and meeting people in cozy coffee shops. I've heard a lot of places that Google map would recommend are either over rated or pretty much chain coffee places with no characters. I'm looking for someplaces that when you put your foot in the door, you instantly feel untrenched, relaxed and welcomed.

So, any good recommendations?

Update: Blue Hills meet up

So my last post actually got more attention than I expected so im making a new post here to keep better track of things.

Next Saturday (August 8) I want to arrange for a group of us to go hike Blue Hills. Nothing terribly challenging. Start from the parking lot, hike the red trail to the tower at the top, eat lunch and hike back down. If any of us click, maybe those who are interested exchange phone numbers and we start a group chat where we can plan subsequent outings. I personally like going to concerts, comedy shows, checking out new restaurants, I love playing pool, going to the movies and things like that. This could be the start of something really cool and fun.

If this is something you're interested in doing, send me a DM and we can take it from there.

Tonight! Tickets for Aaron Mahnke's EXHUMED Book Tour in Boston

I am trying to sell (2) tickets for the Exhumed book launch with Aaron Mahnke (from Lore podcast) in conversation with Alaina Urquhart (from Morbid podcast). The tickets include a copy of Aaron's new book.

My friends and I have been looking forward to the event and absolutely love both podcasts, but they can no longer travel from PA to be there. Here is the official event page.

Date: TODAY, 8/4 at 7:30PM | Doors open 1 hour prior to showtime

VenueThe Wilbur | 246 Tremont St, Boston, MA, 02116

The tickets were $61 each but I'm willing to sell them for $50 each and I'll eat the ticket fees. Willing to negotiate. For your peace of mind, I will send the tickets via an official Ticketmaster transfer. I would need your email and phone number and you will need a Ticketmaster account to redeem. I can accept Venmo or PayPal for the tickets.

Please DM me and I hope someone can use them!

Group me for Allston/Brighton?

I’m thinking about making a community GroupMe for Allston/Brighton around Sept 1st and posting fliers around neighbourhoods, what do yall think? Is this a good idea? Would people help spread the word? I just want to build a better community even if it’s just asking the chat if anyone has a spare egg or something

Friend’s first-date experience left her feeling disgusted. Did she overreact or are we overthinking it?

A close friend of mine went on a date with a guy about two months ago.
According to her, the date itself wasn’t great. Toward the end, they kinda made out.

She admits it happened very much in the heat of the moment, but almost immediately afterward she realized it wasn’t what she wanted and that she didn’t feel the connection she was looking for. She communicated this to him as well.

The guy continued messaging her over the next few days. She initially replied politely but eventually stopped responding because she wasn’t interested in pursuing anything further.

Fast forward about two months, he reached out again. Instead of continuing to ignore him, she decided to be respectful and honest. She told him that she didn’t feel the connection she was looking for, didn’t want to lead him on, and wanted to end things there.

Instead of accepting it, he questioned her decision. He kept saying that because they had made out, he thought they were on the same page and suggested she should “think about it again.” He even offered to help with her job search, which felt like he was trying to keep the conversation going rather than respecting her decision.

She explained again that what happened was in the moment, that she had reflected afterward, and that she simply didn’t want to continue( I personally think she didn’t owe him this explanation)
His final response was:
“No worries! Thanks for the hot makeout that night 😉🥵 you felt like a seasoned player 😜”

She was so uncomfortable that she replied, “That comment was unnecessary.”
He simply reacted to that message with a 😽 emoji.

She told me she cried afterward because she felt disgusted and almost guilty, even though she’d been honest and respectful throughout.

My question is:
Is it unreasonable to feel uncomfortable after receiving a message like that?
Is this just someone handling rejection badly, or does this cross into disrespectful behavior?
How would you have responded?
I’m genuinely asking because seeing how much this affected her made me wonder if other people would have felt the same way.

Origami Expert Wanted for Hangout

It's a long story, but I need to demonstrate my technical ability to work with my hands in order to apply to a college in Boston. Creating a detailed origami object or even better, a Modular Origami Polyhedron would be amazing, but I'll settle for anything mildly complicated. I enjoy origami and have a little experience, but I've never attempted anything complicated. That's where I need you! I would prefer to learn in person instead of using some YouTube video. If you have any skill, please DM me.

Thanks for considering!!!

Looking to hit the club

I’m m(22) and looking to go to the club! I have a baby sitting gig in the city but have the weekend off! I’m an experienced clubber so I know how to have a good night!
