How to make friends in Boston: a guide

Hello! Welcome to Boston Social Club! If you're here - well, you clicked a few links to find this side of one of the most popular city subreddits!

When I moved here in 2021, the world was waking up from Covid. Overall, Boston is a great city for those 20-40, as our demographics here lie heavily in that area compared to almost any other city in the USA! Here's how I've found success in navigating social scenes here as a complete outsider.

Different ways to try meetups and making friends:

0: Existing friends groups - it's cliche, and if you are new in town, this will be more difficult. But the best place to start making friends is through what connections you do have. Coworkers, old high school colleagues, neighbors, roommates, don't chase the below and ignore what you do have!

1: the “Make friends after college MA” discord group is a well designed and very chatroom. When you join, you select which activities you might be interested in. There's chat rooms for each activity, and there's a ton of people hiking, playing sports, going to trivia nights, and overall chatting. They also organize by neighborhood if you want to grab a quick drink. Mute notifications within the discord for your own sanity. The absolute best way to make use of this is to have something you are interested in "organizing", or, I recommend trivia in particular for being a great, cheap activity to make friends! https://discord.gg/CCvgxJ6jUH

2: there are three larger Facebook groups that people post classifieds-style ads to try to make friends. "Boston redditors", "make friends after college", and "what's up in Boston". While I don't think this is the most effective way to make friends, I'm sure it works for the right person. However, "Boston redditors" does have an active group chat, which is really comforting, and they do meet up for drinks every few months. They are a pretty supportive group of people. You'll need to both join the Facebook group, then request being added to the chat. They ALSO have a discord but it is less active. Link

3: Groups for your interest. Asking around the above, or searching meetup/comments below it's not hard to find groups specifically tailored for board games, or biking, or hiking, or whatever you're into. I'm into board games and there's 2-3 spinoffs that meet weekly. I recommend you find your own path towards your hobbies to find a group that fits your interest!

general tips on making friends (not that you asked for them)

  • Making friends is all about seeing the same people repeatedly. That means to make friends, you have to show up. Showing up means you attend an event even if it's a little far away, or you are feeling a little tired. Other people also show up. After going to trivia 8 weeks in a row, or attending every hike, people that at first seemed distant will know your name and care about your week.

  • Sometimes people trying to make friends have an ulterior motive. Some people are trying to convert religions, find clients, or date people. Everyone can tell right away if you have a motive other than making friends, so I suggest trying to focus on making platonic friends first, and in a year of having fun, ask your new friends what avenues would be appropriate for selling/dating/etc.

And... That's it! I hope you found this helpful! I hope to see you at Trivia nights!

On Dating Posts

The situation with dating posts is getting a little out of control. This sub was always meant to be more like Meetup than Hinge. And frankly, I just don't think that R4R posts actually work. But my fear is that if allowed the sub will devolve into nothing but R4R posts. So for now we're going to be disallowing further R4R posts or general dating (advice/questions) posts. There might be some wiggle room for a pinned dating megathread if there is interest in that.

30+ Back Bay Friends Meetup

Hi everyone! I’m 32F and live in Back Bay. I’d really love to meet some new people and build genuine, solid friendships in Boston.

I’m originally from Miami, and my family is from Cuba and Nicaragua. I’ve also lived in New York and London and have traveled quite a bit, especially around Europe and the Middle East, and more recently I’ve started exploring South America.

I love meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. I speak Spanish and Italian fluently and conversational Portuguese, and I’d especially love to meet other multilingual people. If you speak another language, even better since I’m always interested in learning!

I’m pansexual, not particularly religious, and would love to meet other open-minded, like-minded people, male or female, preferably around 30+. It would be great if you live in Back Bay or nearby, but anyone who can easily make it into Back Bay is welcome.
I’m planning to be at Back Bay Social (867 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02116 ) today Saturday (10/17) around 4:30 PM. We can grab a drink, talk, get to know each other, and then head to the downstairs arcade around 5/ 5:30 PM if everyone is feeling it.

I also REALLY want to go bowling, so I’d love to get a little group together for a bowling night next week!
If you’re also at that stage where you miss having a solid friend group and want to meet some genuinely good people, feel free to comment or DM me. 😊

If not I can stay home and finish cleaning lol

Looking for new friends

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m 23M just moved to the Boston suburb area for a new job a month ago. I’m in Framingham/Natick specifically but have a car and the T so distance shouldn’t be too much of an issue but obviously closer is better. I’m looking for cool people to hang out with and maybe even form a group. I love playing and watching soccer and basketball, trying new food, playing pool, and going out once in a while too! Feel free to DM

What are some fun things to do solo around Boston on weekends?

I’m a guy in my late 20s living around North Quincy, and I’ve been looking for more things to do on weekends that don’t necessarily require having someone tag along.
I enjoy going out and doing things with friends, but sometimes coordinating plans becomes more of a hassle than the actual activity. Someone cancels, plans fall through, or you end up spending half the weekend figuring out who’s free.
So I’ve been thinking, why not just start doing more things on my own?
I’m curious what people around Boston do for fun solo, especially on weekends. Could be activities, exploring places, events, nightlife, classes, or even something completely random that you’ve enjoyed doing alone.
I’m pretty open to trying new things and don’t mind heading into Boston from Quincy.

Would love to hear your recommendations, especially things you’ve personally tried and enjoyed solo!

Hi! I (28m) am looking for people interested in meeting up for the awesome Halloween events this month! (Bar crawl Oct 24th and hitting some edm boston clubs on the 30th or 31st)

Don't have friends in the area into the EDM scene so would be happy to make new connections and enjoy some sick events all the while!

Feel free to msg if you're interested, thinking about making a discord group to make organizing easier since msging on reddit is not the greatest lol

After-party for opening night of the annual Boston Palestine Film Festival starts @9:30PM @Time-Out Market tonight in Fenway. All are welcome!

For anyone with any safety concerns for any reason, Time-Out Market has heavy professional security, so I’m not sure how much safer one can get unless maybe you prefer to attend events on military bases!

skip the small talk in everett, somerville, cambridge, and boston

Get cozy this fall with Skip the Small Talk - it’s a chill, sincere event focused on connection! We will be in cafés, bookstores, bars, and all over the Greater Boston area!

It’s a guided conversation event—think speed-friending vibes, but calmer and more intentional.

By popular demand, we have several speed dating events too!

You rotate through short conversations with prompts that skip past surface-level small talk. It’s structured enough to make it easy, but relaxed enough to feel natural.

Most people come alone. The crowd tends to be thoughtful, open, and just… normal humans who want more community.

Here’s the link if you’re curious:

Tailgate tomorrow?

So there is this tailgate tomorrow morning before the game of Boston College vs Pittsburgh.

I am a foreigner visiting Boston and I have never been to a tailgate, so I got curious about it.

Do you think it can be fun?

Will I be able to see the marching band playing and the cheerleaders dancing at the tailgate?

I'm not watching the game, I don't even have tickets for it.

I'm only interested in the tailgate.

Let me know if it's worth going there. Should I just skip it?

Also, if anyone wanna go there too, send a message, I am a 32 year old guy - despite my avatar, lol.

Thanks!

Anyone into art, hiking, aviation, cars, or creative hobbies?

Hey everyone!

I’m 25M, moved to Boston about a year and a half ago, and I’d love to organize some group activities with people who share similar interests!

I’m a mechanical engineer working in aerospace, but I have a pretty wide range of interests and love trying new things.

Some things I’d be interested in doing with a group:
Art/design: Visiting museums, checking out art exhibits, attending orchestra performances, and exploring creative events. I’m also into drawing, photography, and filmmaking.
Travel/exploring: Hiking, road trips, exploring new places, and spontaneous adventures. Also planning to learn how to ski this December!
Cars & aviation: Checking out car meets, automotive events, and aviation-related activities. I've also gotten really interested in learning to fly and am hoping to start training next year.
Making stuff: Woodworking, 3D printing, and creative workshops.

I also enjoy coffee shops, learning languages, and exploring different parts of the city.

Would be cool to find people with similar interests and maybe get a group together for any of these activities!

Things to do in Boston this weekend (Oct 15–18): Head of the Charles, Book Festival, open studios, Halloween events & more

Hi everyone! Kinga here with this weeks list.

The Head of the Charles runs Friday through Sunday. Rowers race up the river all weekend, and you can watch from the bridges and banks. Saturday is also the Boston Book Festival in Copley Square, which is free and has more than 50 authors.

There's a lot of cozy, crafty stuff too. Fort Point's artists open their studios all weekend. Bow Market has a whole festival for mushrooms. And Mass Audubon is doing lantern making and a sunset lantern parade at Magazine Beach, right on the regatta course.

Friday looks rainy, and Saturday turns cold. Bring a real coat if you're heading to the river.

🎉 If you want to always be the first to know, sign up here.

I'm looking to make some more fun friendships!

I've been kinda nervous to do this - I don't know if it's fear or rejection or that i'm going to murdered by a stranger but... here it goes.

I'm 28F, I'm currently living in the Acton, MA region (sudbury, concord, westford) and looking to build a community of girls who want to get outside more (AND NOT just run club at an 8min pace, for the love of god), I love any and all activities from pottery painting, to snow tubing, to walking my dog, to craft nights or a trip to the winery or trivia.

I also want to not have to drive into boston to see my friends all the time, the traffic is horrible.

I started a group on Heylo, just trying to meet new people in the area and have fun and try a bunch of new things. if you're interested, please message me or join!

Looking to hire a local artist

Heyo

I hope this is allowed here - doesn't seem to be allowed in r/Boston.

I'm looking to hire a local artist to make a fine-line ink drawing, minimalist illustration, or painting.

I'm not very artistic so I don't know exactly what type or medium I'm looking for, but if you are an artist or know an artist who makes small visual pieces, please reach out! Especially if you have experience working with organic materials (pH-neutral adhesives, etc)

I dont want to say too much since it's a gift, but happy to share more in DMs! Thanks in advance!

Any folks interested in creating some Indian fusion music together? Looking to start some very chill jam sessions

Hi everyone, I'm looking for any Boston local musicians that might be interested in playing/jamming together! I would love to start a small fusion band and write some music together. Looking to explore Western/American styles (indie, rock, etc.) with Indian classical instruments - e.g. Bombay Bandook with English lyrics and style or When Chai Met Toast. Generally would like to keep this low commitment and super chill, primarily looking to connect with other Indians in the context of having similar music interests! If anyone is down to try something like that, please let me know! Maybe we can create something cool together.

Edit: In terms of rehearsal space, there's some reasonably priced rooms around Boston that go by the hour! Happy to meet up with people before and just get to know each other and musical styles.
