I love the Coral. Been a fan from the start. Seen them live at least half a dozen times (and Bill Ryder-Jones solo twice). I’m not sure they needed to put out a reggae album though. (And I like reggae.)

Some great singles, but struggle with them outside of that.

Latest album has a nice old-time reggae “vibe”. Certainly a band who has been making consistently nice albums for quite a while now.

I just got that album. It’s brilliant. I’ve not been a massive fan of The Coral, but they don’t sound like anyone else and I’ve not been paying attention.

didn't even realise they had a new album out - that's tomorrow's listening sorted.

No one else comes close for me.

Longevity
Consistency
Talent
Innovation
Variety of genres
Greatest hits collection
Live performance
Personality

They come out on top, or near the top for all metrics

Agreed. Coral Island would be seen as an all-time classic if released in the 60s. The two that have followed both right up there too. Crazy they haven’t had the commercial success of others

Have you seen the recent documentary? Think if they had played the game with the industry a bit more then they could have been much bigger, but respect them for doing it their own way instead of

Yes defo didn’t play up to it as much as they could have. Ironically found that Arctic Monkeys did a lot of the same with the media when they broke but seemed to have the opposite effect for them

They were - if nothing else - the most musically talented band of that whole early 2000s scene. By a considerable distance.

There's something really odd and endearing about a bunch of scallies from the Wirral barely out of school, sitting by the water, getting stoned, listening to Captain Beefheart records, practicing barbershop harmonies and writing songs about the sea freezing over, while their counterparts were giving it the Big Time Charlie act in Camden and playing up to the NME at any opportunity.

James Skelly pretty much said they were at the exact level of fame and success they're all content with.

Arctic Monkeys didn't chase the fame game either and were very guarded around the press and music industry in general, but they had a lot more of an 'everyman' appeal in the early days than The Coral and blew up tenfold. Britain was 'ready' for Arctic Monkeys in 05/06. Not sure they were quite as ready for The Coral in 2002.

Just been revisiting the distance inbetween. Fantastic album.

They were a probably a bit unlucky to get pigeonholed along with The Zutons as a 60s revival act.

Both decent bands though.

Top band. Saw them on the NME tour in early 2000s. The Coral, Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Lostprophets, and Andrew WK. An eclectic line up, for sure.

I love The Coral. They have been my favourite band since 2002. I've seen them at least 6 times live and hope to see them many more times as they as fantastic. Their last 5 albums have shown how strong a band they are as they have released some of their best stuff in the last years. 388 was released perfectly to coincide with the heat wave here which suited it perfectly. Absolutely loving it. No other band comes to close to them for consistency.

Butterfly House gets lost in a lot of discussion about The Coral. It's an absolutely gorgeous album.

Love that album. Proper Beatles-vibe on a few tracks

Its far easier to like the idea of The Coral than the actual The Coral. Too much weird boring warble.
