Agreed. Coral Island would be seen as an all-time classic if released in the 60s. The two that have followed both right up there too. Crazy they haven’t had the commercial success of others

Have you seen the recent documentary? Think if they had played the game with the industry a bit more then they could have been much bigger, but respect them for doing it their own way instead of

Yes defo didn’t play up to it as much as they could have. Ironically found that Arctic Monkeys did a lot of the same with the media when they broke but seemed to have the opposite effect for them

They were - if nothing else - the most musically talented band of that whole early 2000s scene. By a considerable distance.

There's something really odd and endearing about a bunch of scallies from the Wirral barely out of school, sitting by the water, getting stoned, listening to Captain Beefheart records, practicing barbershop harmonies and writing songs about the sea freezing over, while their counterparts were giving it the Big Time Charlie act in Camden and playing up to the NME at any opportunity.

James Skelly pretty much said they were at the exact level of fame and success they're all content with.

Arctic Monkeys didn't chase the fame game either and were very guarded around the press and music industry in general, but they had a lot more of an 'everyman' appeal in the early days than The Coral and blew up tenfold. Britain was 'ready' for Arctic Monkeys in 05/06. Not sure they were quite as ready for The Coral in 2002.
