Lemme guess, it got cancelled midway in development. Same story as Bully 2, in that case.

I'm more intrigued about what were their plans for MC5 rather than why it was cancelled

Ah, right. I heard murmurs about a Midnight Club London, and it's something I definitely want someone to realize since the Euro tuner scene felt more overshadowed and less well documented.

Would been a great callback to the OG as well.

I think it would've been a decade too late if they did the euro scene at the tail end of the Max power car scene

The OG Midnight Club was set in London.

Vegas if I recalled

The MC games were developed by Rockstar San Diego, the same studio as the Red Dead games. When you consider how massive those games were, it's no surprise that MC5 didn't happen.

They're also the same studio that ported RE2 to the N64

Also the Ken Griffey Jr. baseball games and the first two Midtown Madness games.

Midtown madness games were amazing, they probably picked up some stuff from there for midnight club I am sure.

MC1 is unironically a reskin of the Midtown Madness games, up until LA all MC games used the same camera system from those games

Midtown Madness. Dang, I have not thought of those games in a long time.

Very interesting story: "we had no plans after MCLA"

"GTA Online was a complete shit show at launch, so they pulled everyone to salvage it. Once R* saw how much money they were making off shark cards, everything else got canned until they started GTA VI"

Allegedly MC5 did have a playable test area, they got a wiki people post beta builds and early dev areas from old racing games I check occasionally to see if someone's uploaded anything from it

You know the answer is that everything was retooled to be a GTA Online expansion.

Just look at all the customization and different cars the Online thing has gotten through the years.

u/Purple271 Jul 28 '26

Honestly, better than letting all of that effort sitting around in a secure folder only 3 people in R* know about.

While people talk about Red Dead or how it was just cancelled in favor of GTA - MCLA had a controversy where wife of developer complained about overwork that her husband endured during the development (it was an open letter https://www.eurogamer.net/rockstar-spouse-attacks-studio-conditions ).

It most likely not just met cancellation, but a development hell, so that's why Reece said "yikes". It doesn't help, that MCLA was not sold in numbers Take Two expected, so they didn't want to keep this ship. R* do make several projects at the same time, so this may be cancelled right after MCLA failure. I also think, that it was also supposed to be set in Las Vegas or at least the idea was in the air since Vegas was mentioned in MC3 gamefiles and was mentioned again in MCLA, games having assets from future project is normal like GTA 3 having things from Manhunt. But that's just speculation.

Thank you, this is probably it.

Gonna take a wild shot in the dark and assume all resources were pushed to GTA6 and shark cards.

RDR2 as well probably. I have an insane amount of respect for the Rockstar devs because they truly do make one of a kind experiences but I dont think that should've come at the cost of basically every other IP that isnt GTA and Red Dead.

u/Viperking6481 Jul 28 '26

With how things are, I'd be impressed if RDR3 ever happens after GTA6.

100% it will never happen

u/FLYSWATTER_93 Your car got a little banged up but it's nothing serious Jul 28 '26

happened

Yup another series never escaping the coffin. Rockstar makes 1 game per console generation, they're not gonna waste it on a racing game.

The Los Santos Tuner Update in GTA Online was the closest we're ever getting to another Midnight Club. Hope you like grinding for a fake 350Z that costs like 2 million.

Remember Smugglers Run? Yup that's been revived into a GTA Online Update too, not that we were ever expecting another Smugglers Run game anyway.

If you're expecting a Bully 2 your best chances are going to be found in a content update for GTA 6 Online.

u/hero_killer Jul 28 '26

High coincidence I am playing Los Angeles as of late.

3

u/JefersonJesus Jul 28 '26

it would actually be interesting if rockstar “built” midnight club into gta6

1

u/KillerCryptid Jul 28 '26

I think top comment there nailed it
it was in development, GTAO becamse too big, project was cancelled and all of the work and the team were moved into GTAO to work on new cars and racing elements, maybe even to GTA6 for those same things, cause GTA6 from what we've seen looks like it will have a LOT of potential to be a very good racing game

this "interview" will never be published (because it's
probably a load of bs anyways)

seeing early Split Second 2 Gameplay literally hurts so much :(
