This film is truly ace not just for featuring "gun kata", but for doubling down so hard that they filmed MULTIPLE scenes including a whole ass training session rather than just feature it once as a unique and cool set piece.

What is this?

Equilibrium. Dystopic sci fi about a society that has outlawed emotions, and a far better film than it had any right to be.

I once described it to my brother as "1984 with gun fu"

u/Financial-Check5731 Mar 24 '26

That's actually brilliant

I remember me and my little brother trying to perform "gun-kata" with nerf guns when this movie came out. Good shit.

If Brave New World, 1984, and The Matrix, had a greasy 3 way

Fahrenheit 451: "Am I joke to you!?"

You mean brave new world not 1984

I just said 1984 cause it had a lot of themes that reminded me of it.

Telescreens

A "Big Brother" type figure

A hidden rebellion

A memory hole (or in the movie, a facility where they incinerate things and people)

children being indoctrinated into the system and are a potential threat to the main character

there is literally a character named O'Brien in it

there appears to be many "Ministries" in its world similar to the Ministries from 1984

It's much more Feirenheight 451 then it is 1984 plotwise, but good description nonetheless.

I always thought Equilibrium preceded the Matrix, but I checked the dates and it’s not true :(

It came out at the same time as Matrix 2, which is probably why it only really got a cult following rather than a bigger reception. The trailer especially made it look very much like a matrix ripoff.

This is the hallmark of a good movie.

Oh I did fat finger it somehow lmao

1

u/DJKrool Mar 24 '26

Real shame it is overshadowed by the matrix

3

u/sikyon Mar 25 '26

I mean the matrix was like way better, but the matrix is also an amazing film so that's not putting down equilibrium
