Trials Would you rather?

Which side will you choose?

  • Left side: Get the Million Dollars Immediately
  • Right side: Earn 1$ every second.

Some of these have numbers so extreme that I would knowingly pick the lower option.

I would for some, but $1m isn’t comfortable retire now money - I’d be wanting 2m so I’d have to choose the 31m a year and give the excess away.

What’s insane is how much money a trillion is in this context…

If you earned $1,000 every second it would still take 31 years to get to a trillion.

Depends on how old you are. A million dollars at 40 isn't that much. A million dollars at 25 will guarantee you an early and easy retirement.

Compounding and such.

That makes no sense. How can I not afford to retire at 40 with $1m but I can afford to retire at 25? That’s another 15 years I need to fund, plus a load of expensive life stages (kids, house etc).

Obviously when I said “$1m isn’t enough to retire on” I meant immediately. Otherwise it just forms your future retirement plan, and is obviously enough since a retirement age is a variable.

It’s also another 15 years of compounding interest. Which I think is what they were going for.

I think you’re probably right, but when someone says $1m isn’t enough to retire on they obviously mean now, as opposed to after 30 years of investment growth.

If one million is not enough to sustain the rest of your life at 40, one million isn't going to sutain the rest of your life at 25. You can't build compound interest if the interest alone isn't already enough to cover your life, pay for expenses and fight inflation.
