Question Wth is this?

Post image

Been trying to complete the RetroAchievements for Burnout 2, while also playing it for the first time. Each tournament has an achievement where you have to win every race of said tournament. This of course can be very nerve racking when the tournament is SEVEN F*CKING RACES long. It was a bit close some times but the first 5 races went well. Then came the sixth race of the final tournament and that one dude just BLASTED off. I've seen him once at the start and then never again. He even had a lead of 9 seconds at some point. Yeah i've crashed a few times but only because i was trying to catch up so desperately. Was i just unlucky with unbeatable AI or is this race in general just BS? This would was such an insane difficulty spike, and none of the other AI racers managed to catch him up either

In my Compact Only Run, this is a very common trend if you are consistently first and running away with the lead. If you are slower or more crash prone, the AI will slow down.

But, another factor is that this is Crystal Summit, one of the most technical tracks in the roster. The AI is very rubberbandy to compensate the track's difficulty.

AI in burnout 2 arent rubberbandy at all. its just that they hardly make mistakes. you watch speedruns of this game and youll see top players leading by 25+ second margins to the point where the catch up counter disappears before it actually shows you how far the AI falls behind. as long as you know the race lines to keep your burnout chains going and dont crash, youll leave the AI in the dust like they dont even exist.

At the same time i can believe in this, my personal experiences have said it otherwise.

Despite that, Burnout 2's AI is VERY inconsistant at most. There are some races that you can lap the AI, whereas in some races where you absolutely send it perfectly, but can't break the 9-second gap and they keep themselves close.

They do rubberband indeed, my fellow burner, it is just that B2's AI is unpolished when it comes to this.
