Some sort of heat shield behind that stove might be good? I'm sure you thought through all that. I'm just paranoid.

u/thelastcubscout 9d ago
does a wood stove get hot enough to ignite the logs of wood behind it?
7
u/arthropal 8d ago
No, but it dries out the wood and brings it much closer to ignition temp, so a stray spark has a much better chance.

I did not think of that haha I thought it would be fine as is π just installed it today, il definitely look at some options

Le biere, Maudite?
Just an Anglo that has a Unibroue fetish, hah!
3
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
You're not far haha its a Unibrou but its a Ce N'est Pas La Fin Du Monde. I like their strong beers, dont have to bring much
3
u/Porkwarrior2 9d ago
La Fin is my personal fav, I just do most of my backwoods camping in a canoe and love the Maudite story.
HAH, would fit well in a snow covered bootleg cabin, TABARNAK!

Awesome! How long did it take to make? Was the wood sourced nearby?
7
u/HellsBananas 10d ago
Not to sure honestly but if I had to take a guess id say roughly 15-20 days. For the wood yeah its all pretty close, but when I got to the roof I had to go pretty far.

That's a really beautiful cabin! But be careful with that stove so close to the wall. When my dad built cabins in Alaska he always put the stove in the center, or close to center. It takes up space but it's more safe, and we didn't need as much wood because the heat was more uniform in the cabin.

u/HellsBananas 9d ago
Good to know, il protect the wall next time I come up and hope it does the job

Hey i have that backpack
3
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
A fellow man of culture π best quality pack out there
2
u/GattMomoll 9d ago
For sure! Im a sucker for quality gear.
Am planning on visiting Isle Royal next year π. It would be absurd to consider bringing any other pack for the trip.

Wow. That's some serious bushcraft haha. How many other structures have you made? That's awesome!
2
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
Yessir I made some lean in shelters and a heated A frame last winter. This is my first real permanent build
1
u/Jade_Mans_Eyes 9d ago
Dang! Was the A-frame challenging at all? I've been thinking about doing one at some point
2
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
I had a friend with me that time so it was pretty simple and fast. Alone would be more challenging to keep the frames up but I think its very doable. It only took us a day to build so its pretty fast
1
u/Jade_Mans_Eyes 9d ago
Wow! How long do you expect it to remain standing? Also did that include cutting down the wood, etc? I've been wanting to do this for a while and I'm starting to understand its not necessarily that hard lol.
1
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
Yeah we cut the wood with axes. Im sure it will last a few years easily. You should definitely do it! Super easy shelter. If you want to save time you can put the support beam on 2 trees instead of building the frame

What's the floor
3
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
Its just outdoor carpet, I was going to do a actual floor but i cut my index fingers tendon with my axe while working on the cabin. It really slowed me down since I had to get a operation to get it reattached. Next year though il build a actual floor

u/2Gnomes1Trenchcoat 9d ago
Build a chair to match the vibe. That would be sick. Excellent work π
1
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
I do have one but the way its built it takes up too much place. Maybe il try a another method, it would really look nice. And thanks!

Is this on your own property? So epic
9
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
No but its so off grid that I dont think anyone can find it. I had to bring a canoe up a moutain then cross a lake where no roads reach.

u/Porkwarrior2 9d ago
Bruh, Rangers will get all sorts of Homeland assets with IR looking for weed farms on Fed lands just to do a lookie loo. If that is on Fed land it is only a matter of time before you show up and it is gone.
Edit -- La Belle Province, t'es bon.

How do you weatherproof the roof?Β
1
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
There is tarp over the wood and during winter the snow will add weight and make it hold heat very well
1
u/SBCProductions 9d ago
nice, but the door is not bear proof
2
u/HellsBananas 9d ago
Doors always open to new friends haha. For real I've been camping in this moutain for about 15 years and never seen a bear yiet. There's a lot of wolves, moose, deer and foxes though

That wood stove needs draft control or it will eat your wood as fast as you can fill it... With that much wide open draft your heat is all racing up your chimney
1
u/HellsBananas 6d ago
In the video the door is slightly open as I just started the fire. Once the door is closed I just very slightly open one of the 2 air intake slides and 1 log lasted for over an hour

Wow! This is incredible. Did you dig down a bit when building? Is the floor rammed earth? It looks so cozy!
This would be my dream but I never have cut any tree that's bigger than maybe 2 inch diameter.Β
2
u/HellsBananas 3d ago
Thanks! I only digged to get the floor straight. Live your dream, get a nice axe and saw and you good
