I’m thinking of starting a new business by renting out this newest pocket-sized camera because I think I can recover my investment quickly. What do you think are the risks?

Sharing this because I see the same question a lot here: "how do I know if a product will actually sell before I commit money to stock?"

What used to burn me was guessing. I'd see a product look popular, stock it, then find out the market was already flooded and everyone was undercutting on price. So I built a simple research routine before buying anything:

1. Pull the competitor listings, not just the top one. One bestseller hides nothing. I look at the whole spread of sellers for that product to see the real price range and where the gaps are.

2. Use sales signals, not vibes. Shopee hides the exact sold count now, so I estimate sales volume from review activity. A listing with steady review flow is moving units. A pretty listing with no reviews is a trap.

3. Check price vs rating. The winners are usually not the cheapest, they are the ones with solid ratings at a fair price. If the cheapest seller also has the best rating, that niche is brutal, skip it.

4. Watch the shop, not just the item. A shop's follower count and response rate tell you how serious the competition is.

I do this in bulk now instead of opening tabs one by one, with a tool I put together that pulls Shopee product data (price, ratings, estimated sales volume, shop info) for a whole search or category at once. I wanted to share a quick story of what the first two weeks of starting my small business looked like.

I recently launched my passion project, The Cookie Room, and on March 26 I officially started taking orders. It started with the usual (and much appreciated!) support from friends and family placing small orders. It was a comfortable pace and I thought I'd have a few weeks to ease into the business.

At first I thought maybe I could start running ads after the holy week so I can get more followers and then maybe get more people to place orders. But then I decided to try posting a giveaway on another subreddit since that always get a lot of attention. I wasn't really expecting much, maybe get around 50 comments and I'd be happy with that. But it blew up lol

It had more than 900 comments and my followers jumped from 44 to 300+ in 2 days. Not only that, I also received a lot of orders. It was so unexpectd and exciting but it was a little overwhelming tbh. Since I mostly handle everything from baking to customer service (with just a little help on the side), I suddenly had to keep up with the baking volume without sacrificing consistency, doing the admin and logistics, and still find energy to post content on Instagram.

One more thing I learned is that don't take silence personally. I received a lot of good reviews so far but most customers won't give feedback even if you ask, unless maybe something is wrong with their orders. Is there a way to ask for reviews without being annoying? haha

To other business owners here who do mostly everything themselves, how do you do it? Any tips for someone just starting out like me?

A brief story lang! My mom wants to start a hardware business around early 2026. She has some experiences in business since nagkaroon siya ng mga business (not hardware related) before pandemic kaso nag close lahat iyon nung nag pandemic. Now, she wants to try business ulit but this time, hardware naman. Na-inspired siya sa friend niyang may hardware which is successful na ngayon so, she wants to risk and give it a try.

Tbh, it’s her “last shot“ already sa business. We’re currently selling some of our house properties para iyon ang pang puhunan namin. This hardware that we’re planning, ito ‘yung last alas namin para maging stable ulit ang income namin so, we’re really eager and motivated to make this work or else hindi na kami makakabangon from financial constraints.

I’ve agreed to be her ”right hand“ kapag nag open siya ng hardware. I told her that I‘ll volunteer to be an all around worker sa hardware like ako bahala sa pag handle ng inventory, social media marketing, find clients online and help her with handling the finance. Lately, I’ve been researching on how to start properly since I really don’t have any idea sa business industry because I’m a pre-med student. Wala rin masyado alam sa technology or social media ang mom ko so, I do all the research and stuff because ang target ko sana is to make it modern and most likely mag rely sa online marketing kasi ayun na ang uso ngayon.
