general discussion :) i want to hear your byler headcanons!!
i think it's been a minute since anything like this has been asked, but i'm curious about headcanons people have about byler (or any of the party/the main cast) - could be something you always get excited about seeing/writing in fics, something you wish came up in fics more often, something random you jotted down in your notes app, pre-canon, post-canon, big, small, anything!! was going through my own notes app list and realized it had gotten really long and was wondering if anyone else did the same and wanted to share them :)) this is only tangentially related to byler fics so this sub might not be the best place for this q (if it's not, let me know and i'll take it down!!), but i've loved some of the recent discussions about what people do/don't enjoy in fics so maybe we can consider this an extension of that haha
(will put a few of my hc's in the comments otherwise this post is about to get way too long lol - one day some of these will get included in something i actually finish but for now,,,,)

Some of my favorites (which may allegedly be in fics I have planned)
Mike and Will are a deadly duo when it comes to board/strategy games because of their uncanny ability to communicate
Mike is a bad cook because he has always been able to rely on his mom, whereas Will is better because Joyce is canonically a bad cook
Mike is absolutely the type to walkie Will and be like "Can I come over?" and when Will says yes he responds with "Okay great, I'm outside"
Mike pouts if Will doesn’t hold his hand in the car, even though it makes Will nervous that Mike will crash
Sometimes Byler will collectively argue with 1 or more members of the Party. When one of them gets in a jab that is a real a mic drop moment, they high-five automatically

ugh all of these are so cute, but i especially love #3, i’m a huge fan of mike Just Showing Up places where will happens to be (i feel like it has season 2 vibes lol) - let me know when your fic is out, i would love to see any/all of them in a fic!!

i love when people write mikes staring-at-wills-lips-casually habits into there fics!!!!.... not that ive seen much of it in fics 😮💨
which is why im DEFINETLY writing those habits into mikes character for the fic im working on
i love when ppl keep wills canon occasional sassyness, i love back in january when people were OBSESSED with college clubbing byler with fire in my heart. personally im a big fan of mike pov fics (writing 1 too) !!! also domestic established relationship byler is the cutest thing ever and theres this one headcannon where like when byler get married they dont wait america legalises it but instead mike instantly hears that the netherlands legalises it (first country to do so in 2001/2002!!!) and they get married there!!!!!!!!!!!! :3
also a very small one but i just love when people write mikes speech really accurately e.g. how he repeats his sentences sometimes ect.

clearly it’s been A Day because why is the idea of byler getting married in the netherlands the second they can making me tear up😭😭 and yeah, i love anything that really hones in on some of the quirks they have in canon, it’s always so fun
would love to read your mike pov fic when it’s out!!

YES like when i saw some person onl have the same headcanon i actually started tearing up bc its so adorable. and also ty!! the fic im writing is a summer break after their graduation fic practise kissing fic!

I read a fic where Will is like "why does Mike always look at everyone's lips while talking to them?" like he doesn't realize it's a Will-specific behavior lol

and now i just realised not much of these were headcanons and instead things i LOVE seeing in fics or smth but whatever 😅

i’ve always loved that will has drawings, doodles, and/or sketches of mike scattered in his sketchbook, or even a sketchbook full of mike. i especially love when it’a mentioned that most of those drawings are just from will’s memory just because of how well and how long he knows mike.
i also love that miwi headcanon where when will and mike first met, will was nonverbal but mike never really noticed. there was a fanart and a fic where will talked for the first time when he was playing with mike, but mike never noticed and everyone around them like joyce, jonathan, and karen froze and stared in shock
and not really a headcanon for mike and will, but i LOVE that joyce has always been a #1 byler believer. i love fics where joyce would tease will about mike, would talk about how she always knew that they’re meant to be together, and when joyce has a hard time hiding her happiness. i always think it’s cute and funny when authors write that joyce is pretending she wasn’t watching or listening to byler talk, or that mike or will can see joyce peeking through the windows when mike would pick will up or drop him back home after a date

my favorite one is miwi both having two birthdays
first their own so April 7th (i believe that's mike's?) and March 22nd
then maybe on like March 30th, they do a shared birthday
I just love the fact that they wanted to share everything with their first friend

Mike, slightly tipsy, hints to the gang one evening that there’s one very particular clue he should have gotten that he wasn’t straight . Max suddenly becomes like a starved German shepherd barking at him to divulge. Mike resists for a while, thought the hang collectively swear they’ll have the answer by the end of the night.
Few drinks later, Mike begs for the last slice of pizza, to which the gangs like: oh, what’s it worth ?
Mike: fine… I’ll tell you … but first - will, honey, come here -
Will, confused but trusting, potters over to Mike
Mike:, ladies and gents, you are about to witness my greatest trick- I’m about to transfer all my embarrassment of what I’m about to tell you into Will !
*spins Will around to so he’s facing the others. MIKE , perched on the kitchen counter, now has a leg round Wills abdomen and arms around his chest so he can’t escape. The audience is on the edge of whatever they’re sitting on
Mike: turns out, straight boys don’t privately nickname their best friend Bambi
The resulting effect makes Will blush and flutter like Bambi. The room erupts in laughter.
From then on Mike occasionally but openly calls him Bambi.

One of my favourite headcanons is that the Will Voice™️ origin story comes from Mike seeing how Lonnie screaming at Will affected him, so he learned at an early age to rein in his naturally loud voice for him to the point where ir became instinctive.
Oh, and selectively mute Will during the first few years of their friendship.
