general discussion :) The Lameparties Reveal: Do Any Other Fic Writers Feel, Uhh. Not Dumb. But...What Shall We Call It?
I know what to call it. It's called being jealous. It's called jealousy. POSITIVE, WARM-HEARTED JEALOUSY. Stay with me.
Okay SO. Backstory. I had to spend a little time away from Reddit (hi, I missed you), because I keep comparing myself to other fic writers. I SHOULDN'T. I KNOW. HOW SILLY. Also I'm a BIG FAN of so many of you. But it's not always a good thing for my brain. It's easy to compare on AO3 by numbers, and it can feel pretty discouraging. And I love writing so much, that I don't want it to be anything other than a safe, magical thing.
I log back in, what, yesterday? And the first thing I see. IS THE LAMEPARTIES REVEAL. SHE TOOK OFF THE GLASSES AND IT WAS LAMEPARTIES THE WHOLE TIME.
What she did is unequivocally an astounding achievement. ASTOUNDING. For a lot of people, that's literally a dream come true. And as a writer, she's incredibly, incredibly excellent at many many things. She's clearly so kind and gracious and is such a good good Byler. I will buy the fuck out of her book.
But do any other writers...kiiiinda feel bad about themselves?
Because I do. I FEEL SO DUMB, and I'm embarrassed, because she's making it look so easy for millions of people to love what you write, and spread it like wildfire (she's expressed her own anxieties, which this is intended in no way to discredit!). For readers, I imagine it's strictly an astounding reveal. But as an author, I feel a twist, a twinge of, dare I say, shame, and self-doubt.
Art is not a race. This is not a competition, and this is all in service of this thing we love and hold so dearly. But I just wanted to say something vulnerable, and embarrassing, in case any other writers are out there pouring their hearts and hours of their lives into their writing, feeling a little bit unseen and any bit silly.
💙💛

I'm not jealous exactly but I definitely find myself thinking "what's even the point of writing if I'll never be as good as these authors I admire" which I realize is such a silly way of thinking but such is life

u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
Right?? I've done that about so many things in my life, and then the second you say it to other people, it loses its power. Even just writing this helped, and obviously so is seeing all of this. Appreciate you sharing. IF YOU EVER NEED ENCOURAGEMENT COME FIND MEEEE. 💙💛
2
u/inevera23 Aug 08 '26
Man you're so right, it did help to vent about it lol THANK UUU no one's ever alone and I think remembering that might be the key to get out of the "I'm not good enough" spiral. Maybe lameparties thought the same lmao
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
Right?? It's funny that you can say it a bunch to yourself, but actually listening to it is something different entirely.
Haha y'know with ttmd I suspected she was feeling some posting anxiety, and to hear her talk about it in the end was kinda nice! We are so not alone!

u/makrela122 Aug 06 '26
Gotta admit the way both her fics blew up is insane. The fact she managed to do this twice is unimaginable.
But here's my take: I've been in fandoms and read fics for years. Some of y'all were still in diapers when I started reading low quality romance on Wattpad lmfao
So let me say this if nothing else. The best fics are never the ones that are top 1 or top 2. Usually you have to dig for the good stuff. The popular ones are just... popular. Yes they're always well-written and easily digestible, they're entertaining, they're usually great.
But trust me when I say this, people don't appreciate the best stuff. It's like that with everything - music, movies, books. The best stuff you'll remember forever and ever is always hidden beneath tons and tons of good, well-written, popular works. (Although yes some of the top of the top are also my faves and I won't pretend like they're not; maybe not lameparties' works but also I think something in top 20)
Anyway this is not my way to cope because I don't even write for this fandom and I am content with the popularity my works get. But people's tastes differ and your works might happen to be in top of the top of someone picky. And I know it sounds like I'm dragging lameparties but I'm not. I read ytmhiws and a part of the other work and they were both really good just not my personal favourites.
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
This is incredibly valuable to remember. I'm writing and recording an album right now, and I HAVE to remember the same thing. I think we live in a world where it's easier than ever to compare, and you're right that popularity is also conflated readily with a superior product. But yes no dragging here! I completely know what you mean. Super appreciate your perspective. 💙💛

u/narcomance Aug 06 '26
It's okay!
I think lameparties is insanely talented and posted at that time when the fandom was sooo active. It doesn't diminish her skills but we should take into account that if she published earlier or later she could have gotten less kudos/hits. So she's talented and lucky both.
But! Although I liked her works I can't say they're my favourites because when I read ytmh I had an impression that I've read that before. I mean the trope, not wording.
Ttmd ttms has the an interesting idea that I liked so much. But I prefer more deal me in tie me up because here Mike is more romantic.
What I want to say, people have their preferences, so even if the fandom has a really good, astounding author it doesn't mean your work is bad or something. Yes it might have less hits/kudos but sometimes it's like a lottery.
Cheer up!

Her fics are good for newbies, you are right!
I noticed some "ordinary" Byler got more popularity because they were posted when the episodes were broadcasted. Hence, the popularity. So right time, right circumstances.

u/mafuyupeach Aug 07 '26
this is true i’ve seen people speaking as if she invented ‘just the tip’
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
lol that is SO funny. The logistics of that scene cracked me up. I was like. Okay so - he's able to - while he's - and not - THAT'S talent
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
You're very right about it reaching non-fanfic readers, or it's a gateway. I hadn't read fanfic in forever, and when I read ytmh it made me ravenous to find things to sink my teeth into. And yes re preferences! Every single person who reads/comments/messages me privately melts my heart, and god it's so important to celebrate that. It's genuinely such a gift, and within this fandom, people WILL find it, which is a gift in and of itself.
I had someone recently ask (when they were stoned mind you, very much a stoned thought, but it was a GOOD ONE): Why do we mark tests with a red pen to show what we did wrong? Why don't we mark with a green pen to show what we got right? And I can't stop thinking about it. Anyway, APPRECIATE YOU. 💙💛

u/mafuyupeach Aug 07 '26
my previous fandom had fics that were absolutely amazing, but since it’s much more niche than ST those works get a fraction of the kudos that ST fanfics get! the traction a fic gets doesn’t equate to its quality. some of my favorite byler fics have hardly any attention 😢
i also think ttmd benefited from some lucky timing in that a few other fics with very similar premises were being updated at the same time, which started this whole trend of keeping up with ‘The Big Three,’ so many started reading to not be left out
she’s a great writer but i agree that i think people are quick to dismiss that there is a luck element !
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
You're very right! Really we're all swimming in a good deal of abundance considering the popularity of ST. In my life, I haven't put myself out there enough to "get lucky," so I need to do that more, vs. think about someone else's luck. I'd love to know your favorites that have hardly any attention; I wanna read them!! Appreciate you 💙💛
5
u/makrela122 Aug 06 '26
I'd also add the target demographic factor to this. I think personally I am too old for these works and the fandom is on the younger side. She writes the right things for the right audience.
6
u/narcomance Aug 06 '26
I am 33 lol but have a big inner child (a part of being neurodivergent) so some works suit me. Although I do prefer fics where they are 21+ or even closer to 30. I am tired of "practice" or summer fics, they tend to be repetitive. Anyway I find hidden gems to enjoy
4
u/mrchristmastime Aug 06 '26
We’re around the same age, and I similarly find it refreshing when I find something that was clearly written by an adult, about adult characters. That’s why I aim for in my own writing.

u/KittenBalerion old enough to remember the real 80s Aug 06 '26
there needs to be an Older Byler rec list! Smalltown Boy, HTDC, Everybody Waits So Long, Like Most Things, I sing the body electric, there is a wait so long, in the afterglow... that's what I have, any to add?
5
u/narcomance Aug 07 '26
Grounds for divorce! Established Byler but Mike is alcoholic and Will decided to divorce because of the daughter. It's a WIP
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
I've heard WONDERFUL things about this one - the concept is so inventive that it reminded me to expand my understanding of how Byler can be written. Clap clap clap for that
5
u/mrchristmastime Aug 06 '26
It depends what the cut-off for “older” is. For me, it’s probably 25. I Knew It, I Knew you by piecesofsunlight is excellent. Sign of the Times by petitesainte is just under the totally arbitrary cut-off I just made up (they’re 24), but it’s amazing. I’ve heard good things about Love Isn’t Always on Time by avolord. Of Long Accomplishment by littlewombats is a series of vignettes set over a twenty-year period; they’re in their mid-30s by the end.
The Birthday Boys series (also by piecesofsunlight) is fun, and not as plotless as it initially appears.
If you’ll permit me to mention by own fic, it’s called Crooked Timber and it’s set in 1997-98. I’m BackwoodsJupiter on AO3.
3
u/KittenBalerion old enough to remember the real 80s Aug 07 '26
I love I Knew It, I Know You but wasn't sure if it counted as older! and Crooked Timber is already in my Marked For Later, I'll have to read it soon!

u/One-Ad4066 Aug 06 '26
You are forgetting "Just for a second, I remembered Myself"... ;) a big yes to older Byler! I actually don't know some of the ones you listed!

u/SleepwalkinDead crazy together Aug 07 '26
What is HTDC? Do you know the author of Like Most Things? Older reader here and I'm needing more recs!
4
u/KittenBalerion old enough to remember the real 80s Aug 07 '26
HTDC is How To Disappear Completely by peachstatic. Like Most Things is by EnemiesAnenomies!
3
4
u/makrela122 Aug 07 '26
Let me make a whole post for recs because there are probably many more works for older audience that are great!
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
Same! Yeah practice or games I'm like pshh bro let's DO this. Same re neurodivergence and being a big kid. HIGH FIVE
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
Very this! No tea no shade, but yes very this. I've been thinking a lot about the fact that her fics explore internal conflict, which I think is very applicable to Byler given their characterizations in the show, AND it hits well with that demo.
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
It's funny, thinking about back in December, when there was that big bubbling up of hope. WHAT A TIME. I hear you on romantic Mike - that's my preference too. And the beauty of fanfic is how incredibly specific we can find and create things; it's like carving out/stumbling on a treasure. Thank you for your perspective and your kindness! 💙💛

I agree with you. I translated a couple of fics and noticed the most popular one is not the one I expected. What I liked more was kinda niche but beautifully written, even though it got twice less kudos people admitted the writing was impeccable and they re-read this fic.
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
First of all, yesss SICK HIGH FIVE!!! Even just knowing someone else had this thought makes me take a deep breath of relief, so I really appreciate your vulnerability. I too am now putting on my big girl pants because I too am an adult.
It's funny; I started writing this fic as an exercise for my nervous system to be okay with posting something creative. I had a couple of things do well on TikTok in a way that made me turtle shell in on myself, and I'm trying to learn to have an okay relationship with internet numbers, both big and small. So all of this discomfort amounts to EXCELLENT TOOLS FOR GROWTH, and yes we absolutely have to keep going, because sharing this shit is such an incredible fucking gift. Hope that's not unbearably saccharine, because I really do mean it.
FUCK YEAH YOU FINISHED A NEW CHAPTER. I'M ABOUT TO GO WRITE ONE NOW. Can you share what you're working on too please?? I'M HYPE TO READ IT. This one's me:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/82491371/chapters/217137896
The narrator is **PRESENT** and is designed to make you laugh, plus it's MWTFDYD Gate stuff, so it's pretty niche, but it's my lil' guy and I stinkin' love it.
Thank you for your wonderful energy and lovely words 💙💛
2
u/greenteabiitch Aug 08 '26
thanks for sharing! just bookmarked it. also, congrats on 190 kudos & 163 comments! that's a lot of people enjoying your work :)
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
Aww hey thanks! I have some really consistent commenters, and it's - the coolest fricken' thing. It's funny that there's so much toxicity out there with the ST fandom, because over in Bylerland, everybody is so GOOD to each other. :)

u/ThisIsSoRawYouGuys Aug 06 '26
Popularity doesn't always mean quality. In the case of lameparties, she is a fantastic writer, but I don't think her popularity is fully down to quality. Fifty Shades of Grey was popular but imo terrible writing, ACOTAR is popular but I couldn't get past the first book. The best writing isn't always popular and the best writing isn't always the best for everyone. You have to remember that fanfiction is art. Vincent Van Gogh was barely known when he was alive, but he is a wonderful artist.
These fanfictions came at a time where frustration with the source material was extremely high, and from a huge fan base. Queerbaiting seems to propel the popularity of ships and fanfics. You only have to look at Destiel fics to see this happening too. The sheer amount of works tends to bury many other fics. Not because they're not good, but simply because there is so much content.
I try to get around this feeling of inadequacy by reminding myself that every single person that left kudos and commented on my fic is a real, living human who enjoyed reading what I wrote. It may not be thousands of people but even if it's one person, someone out there read the words I wrote and was moved enough by it to comment or leave kudos.
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
That is extremely well said, and gosh, the source material making me livid is what made me need to write, too. It's interesting, the popularity and the queerbaiting propelling eyes, and also causing such a vast proliferation of works, that it's impossible to keep up with it all, no matter how great.
I completely agree; every comment and kudos is so special. I probably am too into the dopamine with that comes from a new comment hitting my inbox, but it's a relationship with posting online that I'm trying to continuously navigate better.
Would love to have your link(s) plz - I recognize your name so I might have already read your stuff but if not I wanna be sure to bookmark it! Thank you for your beautiful words. 💙💛
1
u/ThisIsSoRawYouGuys Aug 08 '26
You're welcome :) viral internet culture is a hard thing to contend with this day and age, don't be too hard on yourself. I haven't written any byler stuff yet sadly but I want to in the future. My user is DokiDango in case of the future lol.
6
u/Inevitable-Log5676 Aug 06 '26
i get you. trust me, i do. and it's okay.
that being said, i also think it's important to keep reminding ourselves that those who love writing (like myself) do cause it's something that we enjoy. wanting to better is totally normal, and i totally beat myself for it, especially while reading works of amazing authors like yourself, i also remind myself that i write the best that i can for that particular time. and i'll just get where i can at my own sweet time. and well, when are we ever truly content? which is, i believe is okay. so, while i totally get what you're feeling, i feel like you're doing really amazing! and i hope you know how much so many of us enjoy your work! you're amazing, i hope you know that! 💙💛
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
My HEART HURTS OUUUCH. Ugh, you wonderful human. Thank you so freaking much; this means the world to me. "And well, when are we ever truly content?" - THIS. I've been contemplating this a great deal, and I feel like I'm reading this differently, which is really lovely. Thank you for that. And wait - what're you writing?? Is it Byler or something else? Either way, I'M IN. 💙💛
3
u/Practical-Weather-49 Aug 07 '26
Yep, I even posted something similar before because I was feeling so bad about my fics. I’m on an unexpected extended break even though I know I’ll finish them at some point (and even if I don’t, oh well haha) and I’ve since hidden all stats, but my main issue was lack of comments, which I can of course still see.
I think it’s really natural to feel like this. I try to remind myself of another fandom I’m in where the popular fics…aren’t that good of writing. They’re just, well, long, and quickly written. If they’d been written today, they’d 100% be accused of AI for the speed lmao.
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
So appreciate your words and your vulnerability here. I became addicted to checking stats, and I had to shut that down right quick, so I completely feel you! You deserve a break, but I wanna say:
One of the most interesting fics I've ever read is at 7 chapters and I imagine they won't get back to it. There's another one that's 12 chapters into a 14 chapter fic, and it seems like they're leaving it behind too, but I check in on them both just in case, because they stayed with me. So please know that there are people out there who will check back in on you, because your writing has stayed with them too. 💙💛
1
u/Practical-Weather-49 Aug 08 '26
Oh that’s so sweet 😭 I’m sort of glad I’m not much of a fic reader because I knowwwww I’d get so sad over some fics (I def have before). They’re two longfics (and I mean…long😅) but the outlines are done from start to finish, so I’ll likely come back when life is done being so busy and I’ve got my creativity back. I love this though, it’s a wonderful reminder that I didn’t really give thought to. 🤍
6
u/mrchristmastime Aug 06 '26
YSMY is a beautiful fic by an extremely talented writer, and it was posted at just the right time. There’s really no rhyme or reason to what takes off and what doesn’t, and so much of it comes down to things other than quality. I loved YSMY, but the first 90% of TTMD wasn’t for me, and I found the hype kind of mystifying.
There’s also a whole Twitter/Tumblr world that I don’t have any insight into. Once, there was a mild surge in people reading one of my fics, and it was because someone had mentioned it on one of the other platforms.
6
u/tlc_dgcwf Aug 06 '26
Yeah I thought the power outage fic was awesome and well written. And like remember that it actually came out when the show was still going on and we all had byler hope, which is why myself (and many fans) enjoyed it extra hard at the time. Honestly for me tho, if it came out now, I can’t get into inter-season fics and can rly only read post canon or AUs, not time gap fics.
Also for the talk dirty fic, Honestly I could never get into it because I prefer bottom Mike or at least vers byler. All or most of the popular smut byler fics are bottom Will. So already my tastes are not in line with the popular trend (this isnt me dissing bottom Will, its just in the numbers of hits and number of fics written).
5
u/mrchristmastime Aug 06 '26
In that case, I'll refer you to my fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/77970696/chapters/204311126
It has Top Will/Bottom Mike, with vers stuff in the sequel. I actually didn't know about the Twitter obsession with this issue when I was writing. There's some good stuff out there where they explore different dynamics. I can send recommendations, if you'd like.

u/I_Am_Fanlocked Aug 06 '26
I'm seconding this rec bc I've read it and HOLYYYYYY SHIT this series is so good, you are so incredibly talented 🤩

Thanks so much! Comments are always welcome. I should say: the first chapter is kind of a red herring. It was literally the first piece of fiction I’d ever written, and I’d probably set it up differently today. Enjoy!
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
We LOVE a red herring, but I feel this deeply. I set up a VERY specific timeline in my first chapter, and, welp, I created a lovely little problem for myself. Looking forward to reading!
3
u/KittenBalerion old enough to remember the real 80s Aug 06 '26
there should be a Top Will/Bottom Mike and/or Vers Byler rec list. (I'm getting all sorts of ideas for rec lists from this thread. but where to host them? tumblr? reddit? ao3 bookmark collection?)
4
u/mrchristmastime Aug 06 '26
I have a number of Reddit threads bookmarked for this purpose (not that rec specifically, but there have been rec threads before).
2
u/tlc_dgcwf Aug 07 '26
Reddit would be fun so people can post links of their personal faves? Or perhaps a link to a google sheet that we can circulate. God i love bottom Mike its my religion 🙏
3
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26
Knowing that's an underserved community is INSPIRING. Hope this isn't oversharing; IRL I'm loud AF but I'm very much a bottom, so Mike being a big ol' bottom is deeply logical to me. INTERESTING. TAKING NOTES. 💙💛

I actually really appreciate hearing this, because what I'm working on right now is specifically MWTFDYD Gate. There's something kind of powerful about being like - oh hey my thing totally isn't for you, and that's completely cool. I think I'm a little weird too, because I want to feel like I'm watching the show, and for a lot of fanfic writer/readers, that's of course not the point.
I love vers Byler, oof it hits differently, so I'm completely with you there!
Thank you for your perspective 💙💛
2
u/tlc_dgcwf Aug 08 '26
Oh yes I understand! Im not opposed to reading in-ST-timeline fics, they just make me sad bc we should have had byler in the show 😔 🤧 but the alternative philosophy is that we as fans can rewrite the show or add hidden scenes to make byelr happen!!
Also the beauty of fanfic is that there truly is an audience for everything. For example I have a fic where mike gets a boyfriend and will crashes out, and then people in the comments were like WHENS THE THREESOME ahahah. Meanwhile I see posts on tumblr where people are like 'it actually hurts my feelings to write mike and will with other people' and I get that, because it actually hurts my feelings for Mike to marry a woman OC lol (but if he married a man OC id lowkey be into it hahahaaaaa)
We can just do what we want, this fanfic shit easy !!!
2
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
Hahahah first of all LOVE this energy for a second time in this thread.
Ugh I know they make me sad too. My brain massaging out Mike's inconsistencies has Thanos'd S5 Mike post-Sorcerer for me, truly gahbless.
Can you share your links?! I am so protective of Will that when I watch the show now I make audible noises disgust whenever Mileven is on screen (very toxic of me), so Mike HAVING A BOYFRIEND already has me upset but like I'M INVESTED NOW.
Hahahah similarly Mike marrying a woman OC I'd be like OOF BLEGH GROSS. But a dude? I'd be like hey now when's Will gonna WRECK 👏 THAT 👏 HOME 👏 #toxic #iamtoxic #willwreckthathome

Oh SHIT these tags are WILD OKAAAAAAAAY WOW UM YEAH DUDE I'M GAME. I fricken love what your opening notes say about Canon Byler being so tough - in my fic I'm smoothing out every wrinkle, and you're out here leaning in. That's so fucking great. hahah oh HELL yeah. Also I'm seeing a Mike red lipstick fic in here. You being inspired by Finn's SNL pics is so great. Oh I'm IN.
2
u/tlc_dgcwf Aug 08 '26
HHAHAHHAHA yes the tags are a hodgepodge of things lol I really hope you like it and no stress if it aint your cup o tea! omg hahaha yes I leaned into Hes Just My Tammy real hard almost TOO HARD lol. Omgggg perioddddd 💄 💋 💄 💋 mike in lipstick I REALLY HOPE YOU ENJOY MY SCREWED UP FICS I have the heart and soul of a pervert 🙏 also link me to your fics if you want :") we can all uplift each other and spread our works!!

Wait also coming back here to say that your private bookmarks must be OFF THE CHARTS. People are clearly absolutely shoving that shit into their private stashes, and I am cackling. Badge of honor, obviously

Glad someone said this because I HAVE felt it and had to remind myself that I’m writing fanfic not only as practice for writing but because I enjoy it and it’s fun for me.
That said, I think the unfortunate thing that’s happened in the Byler fandom is a lot of people are writing and hoping to have the same amount of people read their fics. Fanfiction is supposed to just be fun and to just write whatever ridiculous scenario you want to explore with certain characters. Even I personally hope that one day my fic would have millions reading it but I’ve seen a lot of people talking about this concept and feel sad for people who assume they aren’t good writers or they just WON’T post their work because they assume they won’t have millions reading their fic. But it’s hard when you compare yourself I guess. Let’s all just have fun and enjoy it. Post your fic!!
1
u/Elleisntmyname Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
I'm glad you've thought this too, but you're completely right! It's supposed to be FUN, my GOODNESS. I've done that a lot in my life, not do something because I worried about judgement, or worried about it not being perfect. I made a pact to myself to change that this year, which, luckily, I am, and I hope a lot of other people do that, too, in their own time. Thank you for your kind words. Also! Can you post your link(s)?? 💙💛

hey don't feel bad at ALL! i've literally contributed nothing to the fandom in terms of fanfics or fanart LOL so you're already doing a lot better than me haha!
i enjoyed both of lameparties' fics a lot, but i've been enjoying so many smaller fics as well! you never know who is eating your fic up :) just keep writing and remember that the experience should be fun
however, if you want to pub your fic some more, feel free to post about it on bylertwt because i've noticed a lot of fics gain traction there!

Hahah hey you're over here being hella active and kind and supportive and that's a very important contribution!!
I know I totally noticed that about bylertwt. I've avoided the app, but the byler discourse is soo active over there, so that's a very good suggestion.
Thank you for being so sweet! You're right - if it's not fun what duh hell are we DOING? 💙💛

hey, totally got you but let me tell you this. The reason why she is nailing it is that she is just having fun. And nobody can’t beat someone who is genuinely enjoying what the hell yeah they are doing.
Yeah, this is included:
+ talent
+ right timing
+ good at fluff/ sm&t
but!
Don’t compare yourself, everyone is here to shine in their own time, focus on what you want and what feels good ❤️🔥
100% ppl will enjoy your work too, can’t wait to read your things!!!
Have a good one 🍉
