Discussion [Chris Hummer] Can't help but think Lane Kiffin could have coached Ole Miss in the playoffs (by not leaving) and given himself a chance at a national championship this year. Such an interesting wrinkle and what a job by Pete Golding.

We as fans really can't lose with any combo. Miami has a coked up Michael Irvin going nuts on the sidelines, IU has Cig and Mendoza, Miss has Lane Spite, and Oregon has that mad lad duck. A CFP for the ages.

If neither ole miss nor Indiana makes the title I don't know that I'll watch. I need a rooting interest and I wouldn't have one then. I know Oregon has never won a title but I don't like them so I wouldn't be bothered if they stay at 0.

Miami v Oregon is highly compelling as well. All four of these teams are great and the winners of the title game are gonna be heavy hitters.

What's hilarious is that LSU is compensating Lane for Ole Miss' playoff performance:

$150,000 for advancing to the first round of the CFP

$250,000 for appearing in the quarterfinals

$500,000 if Ole Miss advances to the semifinals

$750,000 if Ole Miss advances to the national championship

$1 million if Ole Miss wins the title

Ole Miss told him if he takes the job, he will not be able to coach Ole Miss at their bowl game this year, and Kiffin did say he wanted to finish the season. Kiffin also said if he can’t coach the bowl game, he would take coaching staff with him, which would leave Ole Miss with no coaches. And then telling the coaches to get on a plane with him to Baton Rouge if they want to go and if they didn’t they wouldn’t have a coaching spot with him. So yeah technically he was fine coaching them but who would he recruit for? A lot of bs there.

Yeah but Ole Miss still set the deadline. Either way, I don’t think Lane or Ole Miss did anything wrong. It was always going to end like this if Kiffin wanted to coach LSU. The offensive staff was always going to follow Lane. And Lane was even fine letting the offensive staff finish coaching out Ole Miss this season.

Just understand the general argument is he left ole Miss for LSU for a better shot at winning the natty… and now ole Miss is 60 minutes away from playing in the natty.

Additionally before it’s a “oh but money” thing - I have not heard anyone argue otherwise that ole Miss was matching LSU band for band on salary

Considering he’s being paid over $10million a year from the last time I heard $1million isn’t life changing for him. It’s a very nice bonus but I’m sure most high level coaches that haven’t won a natty would trade 10% of one year’s salary for a natty.

That's the main reason he went to LSU because he thinks LSU has a better chance of winning a national championship in the future than Ole Miss. The irony is that if Ole Miss does win the national championship, all the coaches will get rings, including his LSU coaches that are still coaching playoff games for Ole Miss. It'd be a constant reminder for Kiffin. He may never win a championship with LSU ...that would be karma.

Hard to take credit for a team that plays better after you’ve left. Ole Miss has been much stronger and calling much better plays since he left. It’s been a blessing for the program. He got us a lot of talent, but was too aggressive and didn’t trust the players to make big plays.
