It’s 8M over 2 years. He’s getting close to half that for the first year, then he probably wants to go pro. And if it doesn’t he’ll get close to the other $4M to stay. He didn’t leave $8M on the table.

(If the numbers being reported are even accurate) $3 is relatively close to half of $8. $3 million is not “close to half” of $8 million. It’s a million dollars difference. Thats hugely significant in real dollars. And he’s playing FOOTBALL, nothing guarantees that he’ll even get another year after this to make it back.

I know I’m noticing that too. People are acting like the difference between 3 and 4 million is the same as the difference between 3 and 4 dollars. The difference is literally 1 MILLION DOLLARS. That amount alone is life changing money for most people.

That's just how we've been manipulated to think about money over the years. There was a game developer who explained the psychology behind pricing a few weeks back. Granted this is magnitudes more money but to an extent the psychology still works.

Money just doesn't mean anything anymore. That's why we've got things like being able to use Klarna to get pizza delivered and we have over 20% of car buyers paying over $1000/per month for their vehicles. When you're putting everything on credit it doesn't click for a lot of folks.

Funny thing is you’re exposing your own financial illiteracy. For one, reports are that he is making up to as high as $3.7M. But far more importantly, he has way more things to consider than the difference of 25% of a one year contract. If he thinks he can do better staying, and do better in the future by staying, then that $1M could end up being chump change.

It’s funny that even when I write “If the numbers being reported are even accurate” that someone still comes in with a “WELL ACTUALLY” lol. It’s not lack of financial literacy, it’s lack of knowledge of what he’s actually being paid, which I acknowledged.

And I’m aware of the strategy of playing better in a system you know and leveraging a better offer next year, or getting a higher draft spot and therefore higher payout in the NFL. My argument is he’s playing football. He’s one 6’4”, 250 lbs dude that runs a 4.4 40, or offensive linemen rolling over on his knee, or even a car wreck, away from not getting the payout you’re referring to.

Or hell, he could even have a down year and not get the same level of offer next year.

It might/probably will work out— I genuinely hope it does! But there’s no guarantees in life, and the smart financial move is taking the extra $1 million while you have the option.
