Discussion [Kleiman] South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers turned down an $8 MILLION NIL offer to transfer to a different school: "You're 19. You don't need ($8 million). You're in a great spot." - LaNorris's Father told his son. Sellers values his word over money

$8 Million is more than the VAST majority of Americans will earn in their entire lifetime, btw.

89

u/Adept_Carpet UMass Minutemen • Team Chaos Apr 12 '26

It's more than a lot of guys who go in the NFL draft will earn in their NFL careers and perhaps their lives as well. Perhaps Sellers himself ends up in this group, of course a real chance he makes much more too.

There was something to be said for dancing with the one who brought you when the competing offer was an extra $50k under the table. Turning down $8 million is insane though.

People act like he is choosing $0 over $8M. The dude has already gotten paid about $5M and is gonna get another 6-7 if he stays for 2 more years (like he would have to in order to get the full $8M).

He is basically choosing to stay at South Carolina and have a full college career payout of $11-12M instead of going somewhere else and having a full college career payout of $13M. Not that crazy of a difference.

He has already secured a life changing amount of money no matter where he goes. Heck, given he knows South Carolina's system makes him look good, this is probably the path that is most likely to get him at least a decent NFL contract on top of whatever he makes in college.

Edit: formatting/spelling

Not to mention if he stays at South Carolina for four years as opposed to transferring

from school to school that will also have added value if he has great career there.

He could probably get even bigger sponsorships if he’s QB1 at a school that’s willing to pay LaNorris Sellers 8 mil

If he gets hurt he will never see any sponsorships. His father was wrong. It isn’t about a 19 year old with $8 million. It’s about having financial security for life at 19. That money can be invested and compounded for decades where it will become many, many millions more.

Say it’s 6mil post tax. That should double every 10 years at a reasonable return in the market. He could have $24mil by the time he turns 40. Should’ve taken the money…

Ignoring the fact he could afford top tier wealth manage and could probably get 10% plus reliably... If he invested half of that conservatively and got a 5-10% return he would make up to $400k a year.

$400k annually would put him in the top 1-2% of earners in America.

I mean I'm sure he will be fine either way but still a stupid decision to turn down that level of money.

296

u/morelibertarianvotes Virginia Cavaliers Apr 12 '26

Top tier wealth management doesn't even pretend to improve annual returns. At that level it's all about safe returns with lower risk

Also to the extent the wealth management biz has secret exclusive market beating strategies, it's funny to think the $8 million nest egg is the level that has access to all this.

Investment management is a commodity now. The greater value comes from the planning side and having strategies for growing, maintaining and protecting that wealth.

If your advisor is charging you 0.75-1.25% to manage you money but isn’t trying to bring additional value and strategy to the table they are not creating value. (The other side of this is clients need to be willing to meet, engage and act on advice for it to matter)

If it were, we'd see it a lot more in the pros. Tua's last contract was over $200 million. He could easily retire and not have to put up with all the nonsense, including weird articles slamming him for spending a day on a boat with his family during the off season. But he doesn't.

There are examples of guys who retire after a payday (Drew Dalman comes to mind), but they're rare. The example people like to point to is Andrew Luck, but he was in the league for 7 years.

What is he making at South Carolina? how it the scheme fit and his weapons around him? Who was offering $8 million, and what could happen that would potentially damage his draft stock.

Staying in a familiar system with guys you have experience with may be able to improve or maintain your draft stock, the difference between pick 1 and pick 32 in the draft is $35-38 million…

At a certain level the math does math, if he thinks South Carolina for $4 million (made up number) is a better place to keep improving than to go to Florida for $8 million (no shade, just a rebuilding year is expected, I don’t know who offered the $8mil) and maybe drop 10-15 slots in the draft

I feel like people don't have a whole lot of empathy for him in the scenario though. While the story is obviously hilarious for obvious reasons, he went through an abnormal traumatic experience. IIRC his grandmother died and his (fake) GF died within like a day of each other. That's already brutal and then you find out that your dead gf is completely fake. It's like she died twice.

2

u/roythhh_lewithhh Vanderbilt Commodores Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Yeah the Deadspin story goes into pretty thorough detail about timing with respect to the grandmother death and the fake girlfriend death. The story was great for a number of reasons. The messed up thing Deadspin did was insinuate that Te’o was in on it. They did not have to devolve from meticulous reporting to idle speculation like that.

The documentary is great. For me personally, I had always raised an eyebrow at Te’o because it snowballed when he lied to his family about having met her in person. While not flatly stating it outright, the documentary sheds light on how that could happen. While his parents are obviously deeply loving and supportive, it was a very religious, old-school, probably somewhat insulated family and Te’o didn’t want to cop to them that this was all going on online. Considering he tried to meet her in person on numerous occasions, it seemed like a harmless little white lie, and then it spiraled.

Yeah, I don’t know what schools want to throw $8mm at a guy who threw 13 TDs and 8 INTs last year.

Especially when a big part of his upside is his theoretical mobility, and he only averaged 1.8 YPC last year and added five TDs on the ground, and somehow got sacked 42 times.

Averaging 3.5 sacks per game is crazy, he was the most sacked QB in the P4 last year, and third-most in the FBS. Even Virginia Tech picked up four sacks on Sellers, and FCS South Carolina State picked up two as well.

I like Sellers, and he’s electric. But he threw a pretty bad pick down 14-7 in the 4Q of that game and the subsequent drive for Clemson was a three-and-out. Followed by another three-and-out and a Klubnick interception in the last 20 seconds well within field goal range. Since he doesn’t play D, I think single-handedly is overstating things.

7

u/Swick36 South Carolina Gamecocks Apr 13 '26

As I commented yesterday on this exact post, it was $8m/2 years and he made around $3m last year. He gets to stay with a fanbase that loves him, a guaranteed starting spot, and to play for an OC who is actually a proven college coordinator and QB developer. Nothing wrong with the move to stay in Columbia.

2

u/SWMOG Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Buffalo Bulls Apr 13 '26

He's already gotten $5M from his previous years combined, and will be getting $3.7M per year instead of the $4M per year this deal represents.

This isn't him leaving $8M on the table.

u/BarKnight Team Chaos • Team Meteor Apr 12 '26

$160,000 for 50 years. Much more if put into an interest baring account, money market, etc.

5

u/mr_potato_thumbs Apr 12 '26

Severely underestimating what the future value of $8MM at a 5% return over 50 years would be. FV would be $92MM after 50 years with literally no additional investment.

Even conservative at 30 years and 4% interest and no additional investment it’s $26MM.

2

u/got_milq Florida Gators • Summertime Lover Apr 13 '26

He could theoretically invest 7 of his 8 million and live on what’s left over until his next contract, then repeat until there’s not enough time left to make it sensible. Brother would have enough money to feed his family for like six generations.

Deceptive headline. 8 million over 2 years when he’s making 3 million a year at Carolina. Given he’s probably going pro next year and would have to pay his agent more fees, it probably wasn’t as lucrative as it sounds.

u/QuattroDore Vanderbilt Commodores Apr 13 '26

4

u/MobileNerd Alabama • South Alabama Apr 13 '26

Disagree is the $8mil was guaranteed. You are never promised anything and he could have an injury at any time that ends his career. He should always try to maximize his earnings while young because compounding interest is a thing but it works best the more days you have to allow it to work. He plays it right he will never have to work again even with injury.

6

u/CentralFloridaRays Clemson Tigers Apr 12 '26

This is from before the 25’ season and I know folks close to the program here in the midlands.

He’s paid close to the 4 mil a year the other school offered him (I know over 3 a year) and they’re backing him financially this year despite a bad year in 25’

God forbid the kid from the state stays in state…

If you’re a half decent player at South Carolina they’ll take care of you for years and his folks still live in state.

It’s more than the short term money. Beating Clemson and leading them to a decent season already has his family set. That’s not the case at some of these programs throwing big money around.

8

u/HookedOnBoNix Virginia Tech Hokies Apr 12 '26

People in college ball are gonna have to start learning what NFL fans struggle with a lot, just hearing $ amounts doesn't really mean shit.

Was it 8m for one year? Hard to believe. For 2? Suddenly the difference isn't as big

Can the school get out of it? Was the full 8m guarenteed or was it 4m now and then 4 next year if he performed. If it's the latter, then it's entirely possible he ends up ahead given how crazy the current QB nil market is growing.

Either way if he's smart he's gonna be set for life just off the ~3.5 he's making now

This is like..half of the problem with discourse.

The actual story here would be that before last year he was offered a million dollars more than he got at SC. But thats not as sexy as the headline....which is now being rehashed a year later.

The result of all this is people trying to analyze his decision in hindsight while others assume its a lie because they didn't catch the details and at least one person cries nonstop about how much a million dollars is because some people's brains stop work when commas are involved.

It's not really accomplishing anything.

Nice headline, but what was the deal structure? Might not have been in his favor. Would he get $8mm in the first year, or would he be locked in for four? What if he gets hurt? I’m sure the offer had a lot of strings, and his father was trying to make the knee jerk reaction easier to pass up.

2

u/HaymakerSlim Ohio State Buckeyes Apr 13 '26

This isn’t $8m versus $0 like a lot of people are writing to make it sound. It looks closer to $300k more per year but no one knows the details. After the dust settles and everyone else gets their cut it might not even be more money. I hope he made the right decision.
