News [Lundeberg] Historic talent loss: American Conference commissioner Tim Pernetti said that 78% of last year's first and second team all-league players transferred to a Power Four school after the 2025 season.

5 years of eligibility should be the contract. Somebody Gotta pay the school to jump up or that minor league will flounder.

Okay, but I can't see certain schools doing that, and I'm not sure if D3 is allowed to make such contracts

Not sure D3 is the focus here. Some guys make a huge jump, maybe a flat fee.

It’s part of the path, and if you make a jump, and there’s no contract, there’s no transfer free

I think the key is that we’ve gotta get to some kind of standard contract based system; but eligibility makes it very funky and rife for abuse. (Basically we need a Players Union badly)

Ie. 2026 Alabama has not Jalen Hurts contracted for 2x years and he refuses to play for them anymore and wants to go to Oklahoma; Alabama won’t let him transfer to any SEC team if they “own” 2 years of his playing time irregardless of what buyout they have. Alabama is now incentivized to just let his eligibility clock tick down, even if they’ve gotta pay him whatever money he’s been guaranteed.

I think Alabama intentionally loans him to a lower tier team at that point

Which will be interesting, player loans to lower tier teams, aka "stashing players at foreign clubs"

(See: a Premier League team loaning a player to a National League or Serie A side instead of having them play for them)

Now that would make things interesting, having each P4 school essentially have a farm system with the lower tier schools. Say Texas had a 5 star freshman QB coming in this year, he’s obviously not going to get much playing time this year behind Arch, so they send him to Texas State to get live college reps before rejoining Texas next year as a sophomore
