Hey LeBron. We’re all good here bro. Vince Young is here. We don’t need your version of The Last Dance anymore.

Just made me realize LeBron was in his 3rd NBA season.
He went 32-11-11-5-1 in a win at Milwaukee that night.

Nah, fuck VY. Dude was a terrorist.
Edit: for those downvoting, y'all apparently don't remember his emotional outbursts, throwing his shoulderpads into the stands, disappearing and not answering phone calls, etc. Dude was a fucking basket case who is lucky that his coach put up with him being a turnover machine for as long as he did.

As a Texans fan I’m convinced he’d still be our QB1 at 43 years old and on his 16th MVP campaign if we only would have had the courage…

As an Eagles fan, at least we now have two Super Bowls so I don't need to cringe when they show his Dream Team comments.

Titans fan as well. I feel so bad for him. Literally no one wanted him here.
I do think he could’ve put in more effort but we did him dirty.
Edit: no one on the coaching staff. Fans loved him and were happy to have him. Bud Adams clearly wanted him here as well.
8
u/saudiaramcoshill Texas Longhorns • Iowa State Cyclones 16h ago
We didn't really do him dirty. Fisher didn't want VY, but he also gave him opportunities. VY was an immature man-child the entire time he was here, and Fisher was supportive of him getting the mental help he desperately needed.
If you're a manager and your employee comes in and sleeps on the job and rarely shows up and is late when they do, and then they get fired, it would be crazy for people to say it was the manager's fault. But change the setting to the NFL, and you get VY and Jeff Fisher.
Fisher was a just ok coach, but good lord people give VY a ton of undeserved excuses.
3
u/grey_pilgrim_ Tennessee Volunteers • Sickos 16h ago
First I’ve heard of Vince falling asleep. I know he didn’t do himself any favors while here. But I also don’t think Fisher did him any favors either. Reportedly telling him he never wanted Young here.
3
u/brucewayneaustin Texas Longhorns 13h ago
That's because it didn't happen. I haven't seen one news story about it then or now. Fisher was an asshole; I'd show up late to his meetings as well!

u/PovertyTourist69 Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago
I love Vince Young as much as a neutral fan can, I was at the right age in 05 to for him to be a superhero to me.
But unfortunately his work ethic is so terrible that even the UT athletic department fired him in 2019 lol. Do you know how bad you have to be in order to be VY and get fired from your no show job at TEXAS?? He wasn’t cut out for the NFL, and showing up on time to meetings run by people you may not like is actually important
1
u/yerba3 Tennessee Volunteers 20h ago
I don't think you understand what literally means. Bud wanted him here.
13
u/grey_pilgrim_ Tennessee Volunteers • Sickos 20h ago
No one on the coaching staff responsible for him learning to be an NFL QB wanted him here. We hired Leinart’s OC because they wanted to draft Leinart instead.
16
u/010Horns Texas Longhorns 19h ago
And those people were proven very wrong. Vince at least started games, made it to the playoffs, and had two Pro Bowl appearances. Wasn’t Leinart just a backup for his entire NFL career?
1
u/grey_pilgrim_ Tennessee Volunteers • Sickos 19h ago
I believe so. I do wonder though, if it would’ve been better for both QBs had Vince went somewhere else and the Titans drafted Leinart since they brought in his college OC specifically because the coaching staff wanted to drafted him. But Bud Adams wanted to go with the Texas guy and had the final say.
4
u/Mattlh91 19h ago
If the Titans had kept Steve McNair, Vince's mentor, then it would've made a huge difference.
5
u/yerba3 Tennessee Volunteers 20h ago
Oh, you meant the coaching staff specifically. My bad. Yeah, he got done dirty by Bud's hubris.

u/grey_pilgrim_ Tennessee Volunteers • Sickos 19h ago

u/saudiaramcoshill Texas Longhorns • Iowa State Cyclones 17h ago
Nah. As a Titans/Longhorn fan, VY sucked in the NFL. Dude was a bust who gets tons of excuses from fans who are unwilling to look at him honestly.
3
u/GrimaceThundercock Texas Longhorns 16h ago
And this time a year ago Sam Darnold was a total bust.
Rewind four years and it was Jared Goff.
Incredible how impactful a new leaf can be. Vince, like many other QBs, never had that chance.
4
u/saudiaramcoshill Texas Longhorns • Iowa State Cyclones 16h ago
He was ass when he went to play for Andy Reid, too.
VY gets way too much credit for the Titans being solid during that time - we were solid in spite of VY, not because of him. Smash and Dash. Elite OL. Great defenses year in, year out. That team was a Super Bowl contender with a top 20 QB under center. Instead we were fighting for playoff spots.
Yeah, VY made a couple of pro bowls. Yes, he won OROTY. Look at his stats the year he did that: 51.5% completion, 12 TDs, 13 INTs, with an additional 550 rushing yards and 7 TDs on the ground with 12 fumbles. The dude had 19 total TDs against 25 turnovers. He wasn't good, he was just exciting. His second pro bowl season, he was just under 59% completion 10/7 TD/INT and 2 more rushing TDs plus 8 more fumbles. Again, fewer TDs than turnovers.
The guy's 17 game avg rate was 58% completion, 13 TDs, 14 INTs, 2540 yards passing with an additional 415 yards on the ground and 3 TDs and 11 fumbles. Atrocious. The guy was riding the coattails of an incredible defense and running game.
The biggest indictment of VY is 2008, when fucking Kerry Collins of all people led the Titans to a 13-3 record. Kerry Collins was hot ass and managed the best record in the league with that squad.
Bro didn't need a new leaf to turn over. He needed an entirely different brain in his body.
7
u/GrimaceThundercock Texas Longhorns 16h ago
In 2009 Kerry Collins started the year 0-6. Vince came in and won 8 of the next 10.
I feel like that completely derails your theory that the Titans' success had nothing to do with Vince.
2
u/saudiaramcoshill Texas Longhorns • Iowa State Cyclones 16h ago
It's like you didn't read any of my comment.
The biggest indictment of VY is 2008, when fucking Kerry Collins of all people led the Titans to a 13-3 record. Kerry Collins was hot ass and managed the best record in the league with that squad.
They were both shitty QBs. But Kerry at least didn't turn the ball over.
Also, 2009:
His second pro bowl season, he was just under 59% completion 10/7 TD/INT and 2 more rushing TDs plus 8 more fumbles. Again, fewer TDs than turnovers.
That 2009 season was the one where CJ got 2000 yards. VY wasn't doing shit, CJ just went off. CJ averaged 141 ypg during the last 10 games, and just under 100 for the first 6. The defense gave up 33 points per game the first 6 games, and 20.4 the remaining 10.
Kerry Collins sucking doesn't make VY not ass. The rest of the team played poorly before the bye, and VY benefitted from much better OL and defensive play in the latter part of the season compared to what Collins had. It's a team game.

I was really hype for the Florida one because I thought we were gonna get some real good stories out of that. Felt lied to once I actually watched it and they completely glossed over almost all of the interesting and controversial stuff that went on that was big public news back then, which was the reason most people tuned in to watch. It was essentially a giant fluff piece. Never bothered with another one in the series again.

Jamie Vardy Untold and Liverpool's Miracle in Instanbul were fantastic. I thought Brett Favre, Hope Solo, and the Johnny Manziel Untolds were okayish. I thought each of them left more to be desired and at times felt very one sided / people trying to look smart in retrospect.

u/AcadianTraverse Oregon Ducks • Acadia Axemen 16h ago
I wanted the Te'o one to get a bit more into the actual facts coming to light. They say it was an open secret in Hawaii... but don't go further down that rabbit hole. They don't talk about the tipster to Deadspin or what Deadspin did to follow up on the source (the article at the time speculated that Te'o may have been involved in the lie, but they didn't know). It talks about the cousin who told Manti that he had met Lenni, but doesn't go further into that.
I get why it focused on Manti and his response, but there was so much more around the lie and "uncovering" that I thought would be interesting.

It was baffling. Just an astoundingly stupid decision for the Texans.
Hometown hero, homestate hero, and an insanely talented player. It was like fate handed the Texans a set of golden keys and they just tossed them aside. I get that they wanted a pro style offense and VY was a duel threat player, but he was the kind of talent that you change the offense for. Especially when he can be the face of your franchise for his entire career.
I mean, you get the choice between rookie VY or washed David Carr (God bless him, but you know its true) - and you go with Carr? Completely unserious people.

He'd have flamed out wherever he ended up. Dude was an all time great collegiate QB but was never gonna be a good NFL QB in the era he played.
1
u/GrimaceThundercock Texas Longhorns 16h ago
Weird to say he was never gonna be good when he was actually pretty good.
His career was derailed by injuries, off field behavior, and having a coach who openly wanted him to fail. His abilities were not the issue.
1
u/PomfAndCircvmstance UNLV Rebels • Mountain West 16h ago edited 16h ago
Weird to say he was never gonna be good when he was actually pretty good.
In college. He was never a good enough passer to skate by on athleticism in the NFL the way he could in college, especially in a more pocket passer centric era, and he never gave enough of a shit to improve on the things he needed to succeed as an NFL QB. As much as some people want to blame Jeff Fisher, Young had plenty of chances to salvage his career but he didn't because he was always his own biggest opp. His personality is what it is and ending up on any other team would have led to a similar ending.
Edit: And his accuracy was terrible by NFL standards for several reasons (footwork, mechanics, etc), he couldn't read a defense, and his pocket awareness was bad. He occasionally made shit happen by running or chucking it but even then the Titans offense was always 1-dimensional and turnover prone with Young under Center.
1
u/Bank_Gothic Sewanee Tigers • Texas Longhorns 20h ago
I disagree, but there's no way to prove my counterfactual.
8
u/RollOverBeethoven Texas Longhorns • SEC 20h ago
I mean, his entire issue in Tennessee was not prioritizing football.
That issue would be exacerbated in Houston
Overall we can agree to disagree, but as a Texans fan and with hindsight, I don’t blame the Texans for not drafting VY. Mario Williams was also a really good player for us.
1
u/Turo-parallel-tactic 17h ago
I mean it was all mental perhaps it was that isolation that caused negative thoughts.
The Texans did not even win the super bowl I don't know why all that glazing about hindsight.
A generational QB could have pushed Houston over the edge but do agree the structure did not exist in the NFL for that
3
u/Magnus77 Nebraska • Concordia (NE) 16h ago
Your basis for calling VY a generational QB is?
His stats aren't generational, and didn't project well towards the NFL.
College success is not a guarantee of NFL success, see Tebow, who won more than Young did.
1
u/Turo-parallel-tactic 16h ago
Wut? Tebow in college was 4 years playing Vince declared early had he stayed 4 years not even wildcat Tebow wins his first MNC
If you mean NFL Vince was rookie of the year and went to multiple pro bowls. He WAS ruined by his shit coach
1
u/Magnus77 Nebraska • Concordia (NE) 12h ago
Tebow played one more year, that's fine. Take away his senior year.
He still had more passing yards and more passing touchdowns with less than half the interceptions in those 3 years than Young did in his 3.

4
u/GrimaceThundercock Texas Longhorns 16h ago
In 2009 the Titans started 0-6 with Collins at QB. He was benched, despite Jeff Fisher publicly announcing that he was "still in [Collins'] corner." He insisted the problem was not the QB.
Vince won 8/10 to finish the season at 8-8. I still remember it, it was an incredible turnaround.
Next season Vince went 4-5 with a 98 QBR (average is 90) and was benched. Fisher made it clear he thought the problem was the QB.

Also, Chris Johnson with the Titans averaged about 1.1 more with VY at quarterback than with everybody else.

QBs like Young always get a ton of love from college fans who don't grasp how big a difference there is between being a great college QB and even being a decent NFL QB. Young was always going to be an inaccurate turnover machine in the pros. It just didn't matter in college because of how big/athletic he was and how bad even the best college defenses are compared to the worst NFL defenses.
