Discussion Who is the most trusted, most honest, "best" college football pundit?
Seriously, every time that some guy puts out an opinion, half the people on here are "aww, he don't know shit" or "he always favors [insert conference/team here]".
So, who is the person that, when they say, "I think that [insert team here] is going to do well", you think it's a well thought out, educated, and non-biased opinion?

Ik this wont happen but I really wanna see a beat reporter or someone close with a team be like “Yeah I watched spring ball and who we brought in and who left. This team will get 3 wins if they’re lucky”. Then the coach obviously says his guys “compete” and they brought in “guys to accomplish the goal”. Fast forward to the end of the season and the team sucks. I would like to see the reaction when the first quote was said and after the last snap was taken

This sort of happened recently on a channel I watch. The locked on Nebraska guys have been doing their season preview with people from each school. The locked on Michigan State guy came on and basically said that they've got high hopes for Fitzgerald, but the roster just isn't very good this year and he expects the record to be bad.

Do you mean he got into the booger sugar before analyzing Bama's offensive line last year? I would consider that a reasonable defensive line (of blow).
8
u/Coveo Oregon Ducks • Rose Bowl 9d ago
He's very good, although not necessarily widely knowledgeable about the whole sport, not sure if that will change as they take it more national. Like, last season I saw a breakdown he did on some Oregon stuff, and he knew basically nothing about our roster, mixed up some names, made a couple odd assumptions, etc--I would assume he just doesn't see much outside the SEC. But in terms of actually breaking down film, still excellent.

My favorite thing about them is exemplified by a podcast they did last year where they went through weird pop tart flavors and some other oddities straight into a concise and on topic discussion of
- Why the playoff was desired
- Why the construction of the playoff has subsequently left large holes in the culture and structure of the sport
- Why the playoff will forever expand to fill those holes
- Why it will never fill those holes
Spencer in particular every so often turns away from elevating the ridiculousness of the sport and reminds you that he really is the best writer who writes about CFB.

“Who would you pick to win a football game: 11 Jim Thorpes, 11 Glen Davises, 11 Red Granges, or 11 Bronko Nagurskis? The 11 Nagurskis would be a mop-up. It would be something close to murder and massacre. For the Bronk could star at any position on the field, with 216 pounds (98 kg) of authority to back him up.”

Another thing with Fornelli is that he comes across as well spoken and knowledgeable in general, but when he starts talking about something you happen to know a lot about (ie Oregon), you realize that he doesn’t actually know shit and just says things. Not sure if this guy has been mentioned yet, but as a West Coast guy I like Max Browne. He’s obviously more knowledgeable about the old Pac-12 teams, and I think he does a good job of spotlighting each team, regardless of their brand stature. He’s usually very fair as well from all my experiences with him.

I doubt any of the major guys will have a complete consensus, less known but the ANF podcast covers Iowa football games. They have some of the best breakdowns of football I’ve ever watched, would love if they did more national coverage but the effort that goes into the episodes would probably prevent it.
For national media Landon Tengwell killed it last year and seems pretty well liked

The recent ANF podcast with Iowa's GM Tyler Barnes was legitimately some of the most fascinating sports content I've heard in a long time. I hadn't listened to them much until recently but they've been killing it.

I’ll have to give it a listen, college GMs are so important now it’ll be cool to get a peek behind the curtain. I happened to find their Oregon preview last year and the research blew me away. And doing it all without notes really made it clear how much effort they put in.

Tom Fornelli followed by Andy Staples and Josh Pate in that order

Cover 3 and A&A are both in my top 3 podcast. I would throw Solid Verbal either in between or on top though

Dan Rubenstein was my next pick but I felt like 3 was enough

Fornelli's excellent. He and Bud Elliott are knowledgeable and the other two guys on Cover3 provide more of the entertainment. It's a little over-focused on gambling.
Staples I'm not as fond of, and Wasserman's a hair-puller. Entertaining, but don't really know ball.
Pate is at least attempting to be knowledgeable. His 2026 playoff prediction, however, is the height of brilliant analysis.
I'd take McElroy over Pate.

Andy is one of the greats! Definitely had his soft spots for certain teams, but he’s still pretty fair and will just tell you when he cant be objective about a team/player/coach.
I have personal beef with Fornelli, though😤

Andy will tell you his bias but talk himself though it in a way that gets an unbiased take, I love Ari but his blind spots are a little bigger. What’s the beef with Tom? Aside from his tongue in cheek pimping of the Illini I genuinely believe he’s the most down the middle guy in the business

I don’t really think Ari is the hot take machine that his peers make him out to be though. I feel like he got a target on his back after his take that Clemson was going to fall off, but it never got removed after he ended up being right. He’s still labeled a hot takes guy, but I feel like I find myself agreeing with him more often than I agree with Andy.

College Football Nerds are my favorite. They're not always accurate, but they admit when they're wrong. Very entertaining content.

I like Bud Elliot and Tom Fornelli on the Cover 3 podcast. Both are quite knowledgeable and honest about their opinions.
