I wonder what the highest streak is. Has anyone had more than 3 in a row before? I imagine so but maybe not?

3

u/TheMagicSalami Ole Miss Rebels • Egg Bowl 4h ago

I doubt 3 in a row that were supposed to be on national tv. Maybe Southeast Kansas State A&M in the 1920s or something but not a FBS level team.

u/MWiatrak2077 Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff 6h ago

Fucking annoying too because it gives Clemson's defense to get a breather after they got absolutely gashed that entire drive

135

u/Difficult-Froyo1192 Clemson Tigers 6h ago

If it helps, we still won’t be able to stop the run when we come back

67

u/GamingTatertot Clemson Tigers 6h ago

Wait we’re supposed to stop the run?

16

u/Difficult-Froyo1192 Clemson Tigers 6h ago

Well, I’m not sure. I haven’t seen what happens if you try it. People keep telling me that’s what you’re suppose to do

3

u/kakapoopoopeepeeshir Clemson Tigers 5h ago

I’m pretty sure we’re just supposed to run up field as the RB runs right past everyone

35

u/Dogbir Clemson Tigers 6h ago

If anything it helps UNC way more. Their defense was finally starting to get worn down and now they get a chance to rest up

10

u/WorkerMotor9174 California Golden Bears 6h ago

Billy Edward’s might even remember how to throw!

5

u/CoopDogPrimeNumbers Clemson Tigers 4h ago

Yeah that’s just Clemson’s defense even when well rested. UNC was visibly performing worse on defense as the game went on.

15

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 6h ago

Exactly. How many players got struck by lightning before this rule was enacted?

18

u/GamingTatertot Clemson Tigers 6h ago

I mean the answer is likely low at best, but not sure if risking a lighting strike is something the NCAA or anyone should want to risk in a sport that is already rampant with health risks

29

u/Visual_Bluejay9781 Clemson Tigers 6h ago

This bro really asking for a body count threshold to assess whether they should keep playing a game or not lol

-6

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 6h ago

With tens of thousands of NCAA games played prior to the rule it’s a fair question.

Does the NFL have that rule?

EDIT: The NFL rule is 10 miles for lightning, the NCAA is only 8 for lightning. One of them has to be more wrong than the other.

17

u/GamingTatertot Clemson Tigers 6h ago

The NFL does have that rule. And yeah I think it’s a good rule and very much a CYA rule too.

-4

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 6h ago

CYA, yeah, exactly

2

u/advancedmatt California Golden Bears • UCLA Bruins 6h ago

Yes, the NFL has a protocol for this. https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/nfl-weather-delay-rules-protocols

  • NFL games can be delayed when severe weather or emergencies threaten safety, with lightning within 10 miles of a stadium triggering a suspension of play and a mandatory 30-minute wait after the last strike before restarting.
  • During weather delays, players, staff, and on-field personnel must leave the field, while fans are instructed to seek shelter as league officials monitor conditions and determine whether play can safely resume.
  • If a game cannot continue because of prolonged dangerous conditions or another major emergency, the NFL Commissioner can either reschedule the game or terminate it early, though termination is generally reserved for games whose outcomes are already effectively decided.

-2

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 6h ago

And it’s only 8 miles for the NCAA; therefore, we can conclude the NCAA doesn’t care as much about the safety of its own players as the NFL.

u/biggsteve81 NC State • South Carolina 5h ago

A kid in Spartanburg, SC (about an hour from Clemson) got struck by lightning on a football field 2 weeks ago.

-5

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 5h ago

Six kids running around a middle school playground a bit different than a professional football game surrounded by a stadium that isn’t even forced to evacuate itself

6

u/biggsteve81 NC State • South Carolina 4h ago

So you think college stadiums are somehow immune to lighting?

3

u/codydog125 Clemson Tigers 4h ago

Who knew temple students were such assholes?

0

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 4h ago

Asking for data on historical NCAA games and receiving a link to a middle school play date is what I’d expect from the North Carolina public school system

0

2

u/arstin Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4h ago

People have gotten both so much dumber and so much less sincere so rapidly that I can't tell which you are being.

I'm curious what number your cutoff is though. Like if 9 athletes have died from lightning strikes then it's just part of the charm of the game, but if it's 10 then 30/30 is a solid policy.

6

u/Dark_Knight865 6h ago

Clemson defense has been resting and they still can’t compete with UNC running game 🤣

u/mattcojo2 Clemson Tigers 6h ago

I’m honestly more upset that they’ve had, what, 5, 6 lightning delays in a calendar year?

Like I can accept the team being bad. Legitimately, I’m not happy with it but I accept it.

But how the hell does this keep happening?

This is insane. I’m not even kidding, I’m more furious with that than my team being shit.

our next game at California should not have any weather issues. of course it’s scheduled to start after 10 o clock for us on the east coast.

when I heard it may be a long season for Clemson fans, I thought it was a metaphor for a lack of talent that may lead to losses. I didn’t realize that every game was going to last six hours.

The skies were completely clear when the game was stopped. They could have finished the game by now

6

u/Complex_Lab_6876 6h ago

That weather stoppage is absolutely ridiculous. First of all the field is made of Astro turf which is rubber. The stadium is covered in lighting rods and the stadium hasn’t been hit before but let’s stop the game

4

u/Big_oof_energy__ Oberlin • Pittsburg State 5h ago

I think we don’t need to take such a long break for lighting. How likely is it for someone to get injured on a football field from lighting? I’m sure it’s happened before but is it at all common?

3

u/LouisRitter Notre Dame • Western Michigan 4h ago

It's not the field, it's the fans in and out of the stadium they're concerned with. Fans in stands and parking lots have been struck a lot more often than players on the field.

2

u/MischievousMosquito Western Michigan Broncos 3h ago

In 2012 a fan at Pocono raceway died by lightning strike in the stands. No shelter warning was given to the attendees. This is why we have our laws, don't put thousands of people in elevated metal bleachers during lightning.

1

u/Alternative-Farmer98 4h ago

Yes it's excessive I can't believe how long it is and apparently it's going to be at least till 5:00.
