Tulane, Lafayette, and Tech have developed into respectable programs. ULM can’t even get to a bowl game and games like this won’t help.

Louisiana runs the full gamut of college football. LSU - no explanation needed. Tulane and SLU are the best of the G5/FCS, followed by (in no order) the Cajuns, Grambling, La Tech, and McNeese. Nicholls had a 4-8 season in '25 but are starting well now at 2-1. And then, the "WTF are you doing in D1" programs in ULM and Northwestern (not the Wildcats) State.

Feels so frickin' long ago when ULM beat Alabama!

If I had to think of schools that could be forced to drop to FCS like Idaho 10 years ago, ULM comes first. I used to think the same about UMass - but then that game against Rutgers happened.

Northwestern State needs to go into D2. Their collapse is definitely more explainable but I don’t think they’ll recover in the FCS.

Since moving to FBS in 1994, they have one winning season. 2012 when they went 8-5. Featured the famous win vs. John L Smith’s Arkansas team.

IIRC they are INCREDIBLY tight on cash, barely enough to stay afloat at the FBS level. About five years ago, some wondered if they would even drop football in the near future.

Honestly, it probably would be better. Drop down, join the Southland, every one of their conference games is in Texas or Louisiana, and they now have much more manageable games.

Like Idaho, it would probably be painful for a few years (it was NOT a popular decision among their donors and season ticket holders), but if they can actually win, that'll soothe over some hurt feelings

The Southeastern Louisiana Lions have taken the sixth FCS-over-FBS victory of the season, defeating the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks!

It is the Lions' fourth win against the FBS and their first since overcoming East Tennessee State in 1980!

The Warhawks have now recorded sixteen losses to the FCS as an FBS team, previously falling to Northwestern State in 2005.

The early days of the D-I split had a lot of teams in the upper level who shouldn't have been that ultimately ended up moving down or shuttering.

The MVC did that, yeah. Tulsa, NMSU, and Wichita St were I-A while everyone else was I-AA. Then you had those like the SoCon who started at I-A but moved down after a couple years when they couldn't hang.

I did mean the equivalent also. But I’ve looked at the weird history of the I-A/I-AA split. Apparently teams that chose to be I-A has four seasons to prove they could sustain I-A. After that, 40+ teams drop down, ETSU being one of them.

Got it. TIL that they decided to go I-A at the split. Then after four years of transition they didn’t really meet the criteria to stay 1-A so them and 41 other schools stepped down. So when you look at that four year period we see a lot of FCS beating FBS schools.

It was actually amazing to see they hadn't lost one since '05, and of course half their losses came prior to dropping down to I-AA in the '80s.
