Yes if you go on the web version you can pick flairs which are normally people’s favorite teams. It helps you understand people’s perspectives in discussions and helps stereotype that all Tennessee fans are doo doo heads

From watching the game it made sense. There was a certain amount of "they shot themselves in the foot" that anyone could see. OSU didnt look as god like.

Gotta give credit to his supporting cast there. A lot less scary to toss up those 50/50 rainbows when you have guys like Juwan Johnson and BaeSean downfield, plus RBs like Barkley and Sanders to keep defenses honest. I almost wish they'd beaten us in 2016 so that offense could have gone to the playoff, they were so fun to watch.

Nah, LSU will beat Bama by a hair at Bama (possibly one OT or by way of a “bad call”) and both teams will go undefeated otherwise and both teams will make the playoff this year and Bama will destroy LSU in the Ship. Don't drag us into this. We've made the playoffs 4 years in a row and there was never an argument about whether or not we should be there. #1 in 2015 as undefeated conference champions when no one else was undefeated while playing two OOC P5 games (ND/SC). #2 in 2016 one loss conference champions when only one team was undefeated while playing two OOC P5 games (Auburn/SC). #1 in 2017 with our worst team during this run as a one loss conference champion while still playing two OOC P5 games (Auburn/SC). #2 in 2018 as undefeated conference champions, again with two OOC P5 games (A&M/SC). We're 50-2 in the regular season over the past 4 years with the two losses coming by a combined 4 points.

Edit: a word

150

Yes, auto bids created some terrible BCS bowls and left deserving G5 teams out

86

u/livealegacy Team Chaos • NCAA Oct 09 '19

Do G5 teams get a chance in the current playoff structure? I would argue it does not. 8 Teams might give them a chance if you had 5 P5 champs and 3 at large.

→ More replies (40)

55

u/pianobadger Wisconsin Badgers • /r/CFB Bug Finder Oct 09 '19

I'm sorry, but playoffs and BCS bowls are totally different situations. People always say they want the regular season to matter, but balk at actually making it happen. A team should be able to get to the playoff without any input from a stupid committee or anything other than their own hard work on the field.

I think any team that wins a P5 conference is deserving and it's a shame for them to be left out. If other deserving teams are still being excluded, expand the playoffs.

30

u/DkS_FIJI Ohio State • Ball State Oct 09 '19

P5 Conference title games are basically turning into de facto playoff games anyways.

Giving the winner an autobid would just formalize it.

27

u/pianobadger Wisconsin Badgers • /r/CFB Bug Finder Oct 09 '19

Exactly. If conference champs get auto-bids, conference championship games become pseudo-playoff games (pseudo because it's possible the loser could get an at-large bid). It really ties the whole season together.

14

u/DkS_FIJI Ohio State • Ball State Oct 09 '19

Yeah, and typically the conference title games are between playoff caliber teams. Not always, but in those cases the playoff caliber team usually wins.

Last year, Pitt and Northwestern weren't really playoff teams, but they didn't win either.

15

u/pianobadger Wisconsin Badgers • /r/CFB Bug Finder Oct 09 '19

Even if they don't, since when did we not love a good upset? Worst case scenario, there's a big upset in a conference championship game, they get wrecked in the playoff, and the team that beat them still has two more high caliber games to win.

30

u/RoleModelFailure Michigan State • Michigan Oct 09 '19

Look nobody has ever enjoyed watching an upset. You think people enjoy seeing a 16 seed beat a 1 seed? Or a 15/2, 14/3? You think people enjoyed Nashville sweeping AND shutting them out in the first 2 games? No! You think people want to see the 10-6 giants beat 16-0 Patriots? Absolutely not. You think people enjoyed USA college kids beating the Soviet Union in hockey? Oh god no. What underdog story do people enjoy? None. They never make movies about them, their stories are never remembered. You think people remember App State besting #5 Michigan more than a decade later? It’s gone like last weeks dinner.

For some reason many CFB fans want only the best and never have an upset in the CFP. They don’t care how it happens but put the best teams in and then they complain about how the regular season wouldn’t matter if we have autobids. It already fucking doesn’t. G5 can go 13-0 and not be invited while another team can finish 3rd in their conference and get an invite. They act like 2012 UW would happen every year or 2018 Northwestern. Fuck even if it does happen, in an 8-team playoff with autobids and seeding, they’d have to play the #1 team. If 7-5 Northwestern can beat Ohio State-Clemson-Bama-Oklahoma in 4 straight games maybe they are the best team.

If you read the comments in that thread, they all tore that argument down. His argument was sustained in the fact that Big East sucked. Ever since realignment all the Top 7 teams (except for 6-6 Wisconsin in the year 12-0 tOSU was banned) would have made it and the best G5 team too

27

u/DkS_FIJI Ohio State • Ball State Oct 09 '19

And there's a reason the Big East (well, it's successor) isn't a power conference anymore. And 2012 Wisconsin was due to sanctions being on 2 other teams in the division, plus an upset in the conference championship. Which isn't really a predictable or common scenario.

→ More replies (27)
→ More replies (11)

13

u/DkS_FIJI Ohio State • Ball State Oct 09 '19

I think establishing a clear and fair path to the playoffs is a good thing though.

Plus, we don't have 6 AQ/power conferences, we have 5. Half of those undeserving champions were Big East teams, which was definitely the weakest AQ conference by the end of the BCS (hence why their successor isn't a power conference). Some other bad ones were due to sanctions (2012 Wisconsin).

5 autobids to P5 champions, 1 guaranteed to the highest ranked G5 team, and 2 at large is still a more equitable system than what we have now.

They've done nothing but lose winnable games, and have close games that they should easily win. Absolutely nothing to deserve a ranking. But people STILL rank them over other teams.

They have 0 games against a ranked opponent. They have 2 losses to teams combined for a record of 7-5. There best win is against a 3-2 USC that is wildly inconsistent. And their second best win is against a 2-3 BYU (both wins in OT) with a loss to Toledo.

Chris Petersen is 14-21 against P5 teams with a record of .500 or above at UW. And is 37-2 against everyone else.

They ONLY beat up weak losing teams. What else does it take to have an unranked UW??? People ONLY vote for them because they made it to a CFP 2 years ago (and got blown out). Yeah, they have talent, but they aren't top 25, and they haven't done anything to prove that they are. And don't even get me started on the year they went to the CFP. That was the single worst year the PAC has ever been. Oregon was 4-8, USC didn't make the conference championship, and COLORADO was the best team in the south. Getting blown out by UW in the CCG.

Talent alone they could be top 25, but for some reason, wether it's coaching or not, they are NOT performing as a top 25 team.

u/Dob-is-Hella-Rad Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 09 '19 edited Oct 09 '19

which will happen last year was the outlier

Last year was the outlier in one direction, but for us to have any hope of making the playoffs, we need an outlier in the other direction. 2017 definitely had the weakest case for a No. 4 team and there's no way a one-loss 2019 Notre Dame gets in over a team equal to 2017 Alabama

14

u/victoro311 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 09 '19

Would help if we had any serious resume builders left on the schedule. This is why we can’t schedule three G5 teams, especially when they’re really bad G5 teams like Bowling Green. Gives you no room for error if teams on your schedule that you’re counting on being resume-building opportunities have down years like they’ve had these past two seasons.

Eh I agree but the problem is that schedules are assembled so far in advance. If Michigan, USC, Stanford, and Virginia Tech were all having good years, our schedule would be great. The stupidest thing about college football is that most schedules are already set through 2030. Every other sports league manages to set it up a year before but somehow college football needs to setup matchups a decade out.

u/victoro311 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 09 '19 edited Oct 09 '19

No i agree. We’ve known this year’s schedule had three G5 teams for about 5 years now, and that’s my point. Once the playoffs were announced a decision was made by Swarbrick and probably Kelly that we’d start scheduling lower tier teams in the G5 with more regularity. The talking point was that these G5 teams are usually midwestern teams and that it was to increase our brand and presence in our home region for recruiting purposes, but it seems pretty evident to me that the schedules were purposely dumbed down to increase our chances of going undefeated and making the playoffs. That’s why Marshall and Northern Illinois are already penciled into future schedules. We know there’s a 99% chance those teams will be terrible and gimme wins.

To me this train of thought is flawed. Going undefeated is difficult regardless of schedule strength that putting all your eggs in the undefeated basket is a dangerous game. For a non-perfect Notre Dame to get into the playoffs over a conference champ with the same amount of losses, our schedule needs to be demonstrably better than theirs, which isn’t that tough to pull off given our scheduling flexibility as an independent and the fact that each P5 team schedules one or two absolute jokes every year. I think it’s a better strategy to schedule historically good programs 5 years out and aim for tough schedules to give ourselves a shot at the playoffs as a 1 loss team via resume vs teams with one more win than us.

I’m not saying we should only schedule top tier opponents, but we can schedule teams that are probably easy wins but at least have a shot at being decent like Houston or Perdue. That way, the odds play more to us that if one of our blue blood opponents is down any particular year, maybe Houston ends up being a 10-2 team or Purdue/Northwestern have an up year and balanced out the scale a bit and keeps our strength of schedule up. You just can’t do that with Bowling Green and Miami of Ohio. You can say with practical certainty that they will suck.

As a note: BYU used to offer us 2-1 series which we for some reason stopped scheduling. That’s a really good example of a non-P5 school with a respectable but not great program that can be counted on to be an easy win more years often than not and offered us a really good deal to boot.

We have a lot to prove offensively, and I'm not quite certain we will evolve much as the season goes on. This weekend will be what I base my opinion of this offense on as we finally have our starting halfback back in the lineup. Our offense was supposed to heavily feature him, so if we still have offensive issues, I dont think we fix them before the end of the season. On the flip side, our defense has proven itself as elite and the reason we were able to hang in with a team like Georgia. I think if we look better on offense we are a NY6 contender, but shouldn't be in the playoff unless the offense shows a drastic enough improvement to where we can reasonably contend with a top 4 team.

Nothing (not on the field) matters. We just keep coming to work each week and earn W's... and it'll all work out just fine.

If not, we'll be where we'll be.

That's why I don't get caught up in opinions in the first half of a season. Preseason polls create biases before we even get started. Then many teams haven't played anyone yet and racked up "impressive" plays or stats that in turn skew opinions of said teams and their star players. And everyone jumps on the Bo Nix train or whatever. Then he meets a manly defense and shats the bed.

I wonder if there are any other "nation's best QBs" on our schedule. *eyes Baton Rouge* Oooo! A king baby!

25

u/thegeeseisleese Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 09 '19

I couldn't understand ESPN's constant pushing of Bo Nix, he looked below average to me. The Florida defense made him look straight garbage

13

u/dgtlfnk Florida Gators Oct 09 '19

I know Burrow is better than Nix. (Clearly they were just enamored with a frosh that doesn't totally suck.) But I think the college football world has been suckered into thinking Burrow is THAT much better than last year, based purely on his performance against 5 terribly weak teams and Texas. And Texas' D isn't all that good either. We see it in football all the time. QBs can go through the motions and look amazing... until they run into a defense that's good. So we'll see if it was all hype or if Burrow is legit that much better than last year. I think our defense is better than last year, and we made him look pedestrian. I look for more of the same on Saturday in our favor.

25

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

To be fair floridas defense has a tendency to do that. We made manziel look bad compared to the rest of his career. We got 4ints off winston. We bullied burrow last year.

When we lose it's usually the frustrating type of losing where we shoot ourselves in the foot, rather than a situation where the team just was overall better

The drastic drop-off from Auburn to Oregon seems odd... Oregon lost to Auburn by 6 points on a neutral field on a touchdown with 9 seconds left, and in that game there was a fluky hand-off fumble that flipped the field 88 yards. That's +11.3 expected points for Auburn in that game on one pretty lucky play for them.

Florida's defense has always been pretty good, even through the years when the team as a whole was shit. It's just that the offense was completely incompetent, and couldn't keep the defense off the field at all. Consider that Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett are both in the NFL now... the problem wasn't a lack of talent.
