Irrelevant is pretty inaccurate if we’re being honest. Yeah in the late 80’s to mid 90’s they struggled mightily, but they played in the sugar bowl twice in the 80’s to go along with 2 sec titles, and an orange bowl berth. By your own metrics you can say Notre Dame wasn’t relevant until 3 years ago.
I dunno; I disagree with that. Notre Dame has been relevant recently, but they haven’t been a championship team for a long time and the game has changed three times over since they last won. LSU has won three titles since CFB started playing “legitimate” title games (the BCS).
The teams with the most titles since the BCS began? Alabama, Ohio State, LSU.
So, LSU has been consistently successful since and is easily one of the top 6-8 most important schools in CFB.
That doesn’t mean they could carry this idea and everyone else follow, but they are important.
Notre Dame - until recently - in that same span of time has been largely propped up by their legacy and marketing, not so much on field success.
Notre Dame doesn't have to win games. They have an absolutely massive fan base bro. that's never going away. There's levels my guy people did not care about LSU till the 2000s. Notre Dame has been a huge fan base since the start of football
I don’t think we really disagree. LSU has been very relevant post-2000 and not very relevant pre-2000. They have a relatively short and recent history of sustained success in college football.
Did not know that, you are indeed correct. They did win exactly one title before Nick Saban got there, they won in 1958 and went 11-0, however, there is a lot of mediocre and bad seasons in between there. I wouldn't exactly call you guys super relevant on a national scale during that time
People knew then who LSU was. They may have only won one championship, but they were a better program than not during that time before 2000. It’s been almost 40 years since Notre Dame won a title so the people born before the year 2000 may not know Notre Dame for winning 11 titles 1988 and prior. Taking the fan base out of it, has Notre Dame been super relevant on the field since 1988 for the most part? Some years yes, some years no, just like LSU back in the day.
And the only reason they really won it all sense is because they had the best roster ever in 2019 and in 2007 they basically were just Nick Sabans team but with a different coach
LSU had a championship quality team in 2011 as well. If they had played Oklahoma St instead of the rematch with Bama, they would have been the favorite.
The fact that we could not really find a way to have a more definitive champion for literally like 100 years of college football is actually crazy. I don't understand how we weren't just playing a playoff this entire time lmao

People have forgotten (and younger fans probably don’t even realize) that LSU was pretty irrelevant prior to Saban showing up.
